it’s like replying-all to an email while bottom-posting after the quoted section.

I’m enjoying longposting random things I want to take notes on still. Cohost is a decent platform for content.

in don’t use it because my posts deserve all of your screen’s real estate

it was a DB for session storage that dropped content when filled https://cohost.org/staff/post/470372-potential-downtime-n

I just use cohost as a note-taking site for my paper-reading and it's been fine. Also I read some people's updates sometimes.

I was woefully unaware of it and then I saw the staff posts. it seems like a few days ago they clarified rules around drawn child pornography or underage ‘humans’ in sexual positions with everything else (non-human) requiring mandatory content warnings.

this created an uproar around folks who don’t want to see this poo poo even if isn’t depicting humans, so a few days later under the pressure they also banned furry depictions of underage sex (“cub” seemed to come back a lot in the comments but that’s frankly a part of the web I know jackshit about) and then it became about a bunch of comments both thanking them for the decision and another bunch of people mentioning that no actually this is how they process their trauma and they want to keep posting that stuff (but then can trigger a trauma response in other people)

i bailed out of the thread at that point and sort of went “well it’s cool I never got to see any of that go on because that’s just not what I follow I guess”

guess I’m gonna have to start backing up all my paper notes hosted on there: https://cohost.org/staff/post/1690393-h1-2023-financial-up

I'm still gonna post there, but since Cohost was my backup for all my paper-posting from the ergonomics thread, I'll have to move all my posts' copies to a subsection of my blog and be on a hiatus in the meanwhile, just in case :(

new cohost financial update is in: https://cohost.org/staff/post/1999123-p-id-8948aafc-0abd

quote:

so! a few things:
  • we are no longer in dire straits
  • (almost) every single good number is up, every single bad number is down or stable
  • we had positive net income last month, so despite not having closed additional funding yet we still have more money in the bank than last time
...

in the last update, we talked about a new round of funding. this is still in progress; we will have more to report here once it's completed, and to be totally clear, the hold-up is on our end, not our funder’s. the ball is in our court. fortunately, the revenue situation has changed enough that a lot of the Immediate Urgency has reduced, letting us be more considered about how much we're raising. (again, our goal is to minimize debt.)

now that we have finished launching Asks, I am moving on to start on user tipping. as we've said before, we do not consider tipping to be a revenue source for the company (the default platform fee is 0%, and we do not expect most users to diverge from the default). the infrastructure for user tipping is also required for us to launch user subscriptions, which we do view as a revenue source.

they're apparently no longer on absolute fire, which I guess is good news?

what the hell changed?

I assume a bunch of people likely paid yearly subscriptions in support following last report, which will buy them a few months, but not a sustainable rate yet

looks like their session database is overflowing again, it won’t even hold a login for 12 hours anymore

cohost added this artist alley thing, i think it's a way for artists and whoever to promote themselves. seems neat: https://cohost.org/rc/artist-alley

I found it neat and was instantly annoyed I can filter in by tags but can't exclude by tags. Like you can't not see furry stuff and I have zero interest in that.
