Lol that Russia has waited for USA elections to announce this withdrawal. My hot take is they've had this in the works for a while but didn't want to give the Dems a win. I think you all are making too much of it tbh, all it means is that Odessa is off the table for at least the near future. If Russia wants a lasting peace they're not stopping until they have more of a buffer zone around Donetsk city.
I also think you all are forgetting Russia's major territorial gain of this war, the land bridge to Crimea. This conflict back to 2014 has been mostly about Sevastopol and now they have a much more robust water supply.

My takeaway from this debacle is that neoliberal austerity states are incapable of fighting full-scale industrial wars. It doesn't matter what resources they have on paper, because they don't have the capacity mobilize their societies for the fight or demand sacrifices from their people. As soon as Russia crossed the border, it was in the final battle to the death with NATO. Russia needed to mobilize in a way it hasn't mobilized since WW2, but these limitations forced it to fight the way America fought Iraq, with similar results.

Outside of Ukraine, this bodes poorly for America's plan to fight China over Taiwan. I doubt America's leadership can see how much their country has in common with Russia though.

I think Russia could mobilize more but chooses not to. This is not a final battle to the death, it is a fight for a peripheral territory. If Russia is completely expelled from Ukraine including Sevastopol it is a big loss but Russia continues existing as a powerful(ish) entity. Genuinely threaten it's continued existence and you will see a multi million person army and car factories converted to arms factories again.

I know this is the popular line of reasoning among some of the left, particularly absent control of any institutions, but you need people in service to the state to believe in it. Consequently any national institution that requires duty, service and sacrifice requires belief and belonging and that is best grounded in the nation. Why fight under the colours? Because of what the colours represent.

It’s distinct from ethnic nationalism of course, but if you don’t believe being “randomly born on some piece of geography” has meaning, you won’t sacrifice for institutions belonging to said geography.

You can substitute nationalism for monarchism, international socialism present in one country, a religious purpose, things like that, but you need something to inspire men to go into fire. Nationalism is the easiest to tap into, because if you were to enlist volunteers for international socialism in 2022, you’d be lucky to fill out a battalion.

What if your piece of geography just didn't fight offensive wars? Then your soldiers could be motivated by defending their families and such.

This got me curious so I went looking and found this.

"A close examination of all European companies generating more than €400 million in defense sales in 2011 reveals a remarkable statistic: governments owned some 20% of a combined value of €€84 billion."

"In a quarter of Europe’s top defense companies, the state is the sole or predominant stakeholder, with majority voting rights and thus control over key strategic decisions. Another 15% of the sampled companies has a government ownership share in excess of 25%. State ownership is absent or negligible in only 19 of the 32 analyzed companies. "

Frosted Flake posted:

Conscript armies led to a dramatic decline in war in Europe in the 19th c. as the forces unleashed, socially and politically, could not be contained. Rulers began to see war as a last extremity because of the domestic, social cost. So, while there continued to be wars abroad with small armies, at home many crises that would have certainly been wars in the 18th c. were resolved diplomatically. When war did come in 1866 and 1870, it caused at times dramatic reorganizations of the society of both the victor and the vanquished. Park of Bismarck's genius was realizing that the German Empire's junkers had an iron grip and so Germany was able to go to war in a way that Austria and Denmark could not. Similarly, the French officer corps was able to gain political power after 1871 on the premise that France would have to steel herself to retake Alsace Lorraine, leading to the army and society that lost 40k men between August 20-27 1914, and over 300k by the end of that year.

You seem to be ignoring a few really big wars in Europe, namely the Carlist wars, the war of Greek independence and the Crimean war. Including the Napoleonic wars and the Austro - Prussian and Franco - Prussian wars you refer to there's a huge war every couple of decades. Compared to the previous century where there were three European wars with casualties over 25,000. It's not just a size thing either, there were constant small wars in Europe in the 19th century.

At least it’s keeping me busy at work because the role of gun artillery not to facilitate combat operations but to apply pressure in a half baked diplomatic scheme is something that’s understudied and off the top of my head hadn’t happened outside of maybe H&I fires in Vietnam, and Zanzibari raids on East Africa where they thought the act of firing the cannon alone would be enough to scare tribal peoples away and as often as not fired blanks. So, there’s one paper idea that will let me put my name on something topical.

Two of those were focussed on Turkey, which was peripheral. The Russo-Turkish Wars, siege of Plevna etc. weren’t really relevant to the continental state of affairs. Similarly, the Greek War of Independence was a largely irregular war, the force sent to Crimea was a small expeditionary force, Carlist Wars were civil wars.

Those were big wars outside of Europe, to be sure, but mobilized European conscript armies weren’t involved and to Lord Cardigan’s chagrin, had there not been the emergence of a popular press, the people of Britain and France would hardly know they were at war. Those were, for all intents and purposes, Special Military Operations.

The British army has only ever practiced conscription during the world wars and sent over 100,000 soldiers to Crimea. What's the most they ever had on the continent for the Napoleonic wars, it can't be much higher? Those wars happened in Europe and I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest Russia's rise to prominence at the expense of the Ottomans was incredibly relevant to the continental state of affairs and was one of the major causes of WW1.
