The severe problem with Spirit is that if your plane can't leave the airport, Spirit's answer is "gently caress you". They don't have other planes they can put you on, and they don't have reciprocal agreements with other airlines.

It's very much the default service people use to keep in touch with between video game communities. It's been a pretty safe assumption in the last few years that anyone I've met in a game that I want to keep in touch with outside of the game has a Discord account.

This is also true of fanfic communities, thanks to Tumblr being Tumblr plus noship discourse (if you don't know, count yourself blessed). If you want to hang with the interesting people you met in [fandom] without constant shouts of "You're a pedophile!", Discord is the place to go. It's also pretty common for authors to have their own Discords: much less trouble to manage than a media forum.

Dude, 4chan and 8chan and Kiwifarms are proud of being assholes. Lots and lots of gathering points are caustic and rude. What makes SA different is that if you're a spectacular rear end in a top hat it can cost you :10bux:. Social pressure combines with financial pressure.

The other functional online groups I hang out with (functional except that they include me) do it both by explicitly calling out bad behavior and, if that doesn't work, banning.

In my trusted discord groups, people apologize all the time. That's important.

Not just probably. Google at least, and I think there were others, began talking with them about a takeover, then walked away. It's a money-losing machine with no prospect of being able to sustain its costs. Elon! solved that by ... driving away advertisers.

Tweetdeck is now broken for me and for many: only the timeline and DMs tabs load. All the others, including Notifications, are gone. Apparently parts of the API it depends on were shut down.

I guess I don’t see how this feature even makes sense at all because I can bypass someone blocking me by just logging out?

I feel like I should always be able to see tweets from people regardless of whether they’ve blocked me or not. If I don’t want to see them, then the onus should be on me to block them on my account. No?
So, assume I'm a person with an online stalker, or I was a target in Gamergate, or am a sex worker, or committed the sin of being visibly female online.

I mute my stalker:
1. As mentioned upthread, stalker continues to reply to my tweets, exposing my *real* followers to their abuse.
2. Stalker can retweet my posts and encourage other people to stalk me. Their linking my tweet makes it trivial for other people to jump into my timeline.
3. Stalker can @ me into conversations.
4. I can't see stalker's post.

I block my stalker:
1. Can't reply.
2. Can't quote-tweet. They can tweet screencaps, but a screencap doesn't link directly to my account.
3. Can't @ me.
4. I still can't see their post, yay. And (yes, I feel spiteful about this) whenever they see a thread I'm participating in, they can also see that they're not welcome to see my posts.

Gee I wonder why the ADL might have a problem with banning a core religious practice of Judaism, I can't think of any reason that might set alarm bells off.

I don't think this paragraph of the letter is in any way defensible.

quote:

Given that 28% of Iceland’s tourists came from North America in 2016, Iceland’s standing in the U.S. should be of great concern from an economic perspective. We are confident that the vast majority of American tourists will avoid a country whose reputation is associated with Nazism, even if that association is not justified.

"Don't ban circumcision because it is a religious imperative in at least two major world religions"? I'm good with that. Go you. "Americans will think you're Nazis because you forbid circumcision"? Hell, Americans don't even call Nazis Nazis half the time, and very few of those 28% care enough about circumcision to boycott a vacation destination.

Skex posted:

Thing is it's both, the reason people will associate it with Nazism is because the law is aimed at a defining religious and cult practice that let's be honest is one of the few things that non Jews know is rear end with Jewish culture.

So a law banning the practice without a religious exemption is antisemitic on its face and it seems reasonable to me to point that out. I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of the ADL, but I'm also not a member of cultural minority that had murder factories constructed to exterminate them so I'm not going to judge them for being a tad overzealous.
The point I was trying to make, and I didn't, is about the threat that Americans, who make up 28% of Iceland's tourism, won't come any more. There's an empty chamber in that revolver. Some proportion of Americans will decide that it's explicitly anti-Semitic and boycott Iceland, which fair enough. The ADL is claiming that so many Americans will do so that Iceland's tourism is affected, which is nonsense. Very few Americans care enough -- whether they should or not -- about ethical boycotts of countries that they will change their vacation plans.

e: And you're quite right about not reading the entire thing, and I apologize for that.

More like Elon has been liking one hell of a lot of racist and anti-Semitic tweets, and comment has been made.

It's always weird the semantics that accrete around actions. Back when "like" was "*" I never hit it unless I wanted to be able to find something later. Then they changed it to :h: and I stopped thinking of it as a bookmark. When I hit :h: , it can be any of "I like you", "I thought that was funny", "I'm sorry that bad thing happened to you", "Wow, that was interesting", and a bunch of other stuff. But I do put some personal weight on it; when I like something and then realize it was bad in some way, I go back and unlike it if it's easy to do so. So, yeah, :h: means some sort of approval, and if you :h: something about the Jews will not replace us, that is absolutely you endorsing it.
