I did fall asleep reading a particularly erotic chapter
in my grandmother's journal.

She wrote very detailed descriptions of her experiences...

40 years ago a landmark in blockbuster horror cinema was released and had audiences everywhere saying "holy poo poo that totally kicks The Amityville Horror's rear end!"

But one question has haunted the discourse over the film ever since: Who directed Poltergeist?

The contenders:

Steven Spielberg

Arguments that Spielberg directed it:
  • The whole thing looks and sounds just like a Spielberg movie.
  • When asked, some members of the production say he directed it.
  • All the ads are all like "from STEVEN SPIELBERG comes a motion picture experience only STEVEN SPIELBERG can bring you, behold STEVEN SPIELBERG's creation, Poltergeist!"

Tobe Hooper

Arguments that Tobe Hooper directed it:
  • In the credits it says "Directed by Tobe Hooper"
  • When asked, most production members say something like, "it was a collaboration, Tobe Hooper definitely had some input and he worked closely with Spielberg, etc."
  • There are some shots that resemble Hooper's style if you look closely.

It continues to be a hotly debated topic to this day! What do goons think? :iiam:

Placeholder.
It was either Spielberg or Spielberg astrally projected into Hooper to make him make a Spielberg movie and I guess we’ll never know which one it is.

While we're talking about Poltergeist, let's check out some vintage 'making of' promotional footage!

I’ve heard it as toe-bee, and by gum that’s how I pronounce it.

And he directed Poltergeist, too. I mean, Spielberg had a cameo in The Blues Brothers, but he didn’t direct it; John Landis did.

Tobe Hooper directed it but Spielberg had a huge amount of influence on the movie, but ultimately it was Tobe.

Rumor has it that Spielberg had a "committee" of 8 ghostwriters on the final script and some of them cribbed from various spec scripts laying around the studio, which led to a lawsuit that was settled out of court.

spielburg himself probably felt it didnt fit his brand, so let someone else direct. but his name was on it, so he made sure it didnt suck.
