Libgen is still groovy for almost all journals and novels.

I got a pretty simple calculus for this poo poo.

Author dead or insanely rich? I'm not paying. They are doing fine/their estate doesn't need the royalties.

Author is coming up and could use the income? Pay for book.

Almost everyone who writes an academic paper would prefer that knowledge to be free and shared and not locked behind journal paywalls, so if you want some learnin' stuff, fair game to grab.

Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, David Suzuki and Steven King just off the top of my head have all stated that they would rather their work just be appreciated and shared rather than bought on multiple occasions and have openly praised libraries and sites like archive.org etc.

And while obviously, one can argue that they are all in a position to say this, but I'll counter with every mid-tier to downright failure comedian who has ever written a book will also state this and most offer their books for free or on a pay-as-you want model.

And if I do a cool science, why would I not want everyone to be able to learn from it and build on it?

Again, you pay the ones who need it and are trying to build a life off it. You really don't need to buy a physical copy of Harry Potter or whatever to send royalty money into J. K. Rowling's yacht's gas tank.

Like maybe give 5-10 years for any projects already in the works to finish up. But yeah, it ridiculous that there are still worthless scumbags living off of owning the rights to Sherlock Holmes or how many fail children that poo poo up their parent's works with awful "official" sequels.

Also google was going to have an amazing book service that would have let people access 25 million books for free, but Amazon killed it in court. (Captcha was basically invented to do OCR for this).

Anyone mad about their books being circulated on the internet probably isn't getting their books pirated often, if at all. That guy who was mad at archive.org only had his books downloaded a few times off there and those probably wouldn't have been lost sales anyway.

Also, gently caress tiktok. Sites like that only survive because they don't draw attention.

WELL I WONNER WHAT IT'S LIIIIIKE TO BE A GOOD POSTER
Can someone explain to me why there isn't some kind of subscription service for books like there is with Spotify for music, or Netflix etc. for movies?

I live in a non-English speaking country, so I used z-library a lot, particularly for academic stuff, because I simply don't have access to libraries. I happily pay for books normally, but can't pay $100+ for the kind of things I'd like to read from a lot of university publishers (though I did pay about $1000 for the four volume Cambridge History of the Bible :shepspends:). I read about 2 books a week and would happily pay for the privilege, so why won't these fuckers let me?

Amazon has Kindle unlimited which is kinda what you’re asking for.

Do you have a local library? I don’t know about where you are, but in the US, most of them can get you access to digital book leasing services.

You also may want to contact local public universities and colleges. I know in my area they’ll give the public a library card and access to digital books as well.

I had a look at what's available on Kindle Unlimited and it seems to be mostly novels and self-published stuff, which is not really what I'm looking for unfortunately.

I know that my university in Australia allowed non-students to access the library resources for a yearly fee, so it might be possible here in Prague as well, but I'm not sure what their selection of English language books is likely to be. It's been 15 years since I've been at university, so I'm also not sure how much is available digitally these days or under what conditions, but I guess I could give it a shot.

Apparently there's one library in Prague that works with overdrive, which gives digital catalog access for libraries via their app and is how amazon hooks in to us libraries for kindle: https://www.overdrive.com/libraries/
Looks like Amazon doesn't let you checkout kindle format via overdrive outside the USA, but if you don't care and just want an ebook.
