When the show was originally being set up, the producers wanted Fonzie to be less of an intimidating biker guy, so they decided he would wear a fabric jacket and loafers. Winkler showed up to the first day of filming in the biker boots and leather jacket that he wore when filming "The Lords Of Flatbush". The producers saw the wisdom of his actions and went with it.
