My favorite thing about BoI is that the movie tells you what it's gonna do, and then it does it. We're conditioned by media that anytime a character states a plan, the plan will go awry. But nope, Colm says he's gonna cut his fingers off, and he does. Pádraic says he's gonna burn down the house, and he does. It's refreshingly straightforward. The movie asks the question, "what if a very depressed, very self-destructive man cuts off ties with his happy-go-lucky drinking buddy?" and by golly, it pushes that as far as it can go.
