One Day I Will Return To Your Side.
BIG SHOUT OUT TO Edmond Dantes for the amazing banners and pictures!

:fatshark:

In this thread we will be discussing two really great Co-op FPS games from FatShark, Vermintide and Darktide! both of these games are excellent Left4Dead style FPS games that are based in the Fantasy and Sci-fi worlds of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k! you fight as a gang of four unique characters to accomplish missions and slaughter waves of unspeakable horrors, chaos and ratmen. both have very unique flavors, great slicing and shooting action, really incredible worlds and music and art style. and most importantly, both are fun as gently caress to play!

Here are the various discord servers goons hang out in:-

The game's story, written by author Dan Abnett, will focus on a squad of Inquisitorial Agents investigating a potential Chaos infiltration on the planet Atoma Prime in the Hive City of Tertium. The plot is set to evolve over time in a manner that parallels a live service, continuing to develop on a weekly basis and following a set meta narrative. This approach resembles that of Destiny 2's campaign.

On November 30, 2022 the people that made Vermintide and Vermintide 2 (Fatshark) will release Warhammer 40K: Darktide. It's a 4-player co-op game where you're fighting through hordes of enemies in first-person. The two biggest differences from Vermintide is the comparative emphasis on ranged combat and the addition of a recharging shield for the character based on "cohesion" with teammates. The levels also change what objectives they have, in contrast to Vermintide. Pre-orders on steam will give you access to the game two weeks early on Nov 17, however it is not yet confirmed if progress will carry over

"The Planet Broke Before the Guard did"

The Veteran is the most familiar of classes in the game. Built as a long-range shooter, they wield a rifle which can be used to impale enemies from afar, while the other classes deal with damage up-close. To help with support, the Veteran also has access to an ability that increases weak spot damage at the cost of slower movement.

Their frag grenade allows them to reach around corners or kill enemies not in their line of sight. As such, the Veteran – Sharpshooter is built for wiping out enemies with precision and accuracy and taking their time to really line-up shots in order to be effective.

Ability:
Volley Fire – allows Designating Elite and Specialist enemies as Priority Targets. Increases + 50% Ranged Damage (lasts 4 seconds).

Iconic:
Make Every Shot Count – + 15% Weak Spot Damage;

I don't care how bloody sanctioned they are, a psyker's a psyker, and anything to do with the warp is more trouble than it's worth. - General Karis

The Psyker is your premium magic-wielding class in the game. With large area-of-effect attacks and powerful blasts, they are able to help with crowd control, managing enemies, while the other classes pick off targets.

But, you don’t want to spam your magic as they can easily overcharge and accidentally kill themselves if they don’t expel their magic buildup over time.

Ability:
Psykinetic’s Wrath – it staggers enemies in front of you and resets the Perils of the Warp meter.

Iconic:
Warp Siphon – If you kill an opponent with Brain Burst, you will receive a Warp Charge. You can have a maximum of 4 of these, each lasting 20 seconds and increasing your damage by 4%.
Inner Tranquility – it allows you to reduce Peril by 10%.

Blitz:
Brain Burst – inflicts high damage - can blow up an opponent's head

Aura:
Kinetic Presence – allies in the area deal 10% more damage to elite enemies.

The Zealot – Preacher class is built on purging heretics with melee attacks. They gain an increased speed to these up close attacks and are equipped with a combat axe and autopistol to help them out in those situations.

The class is built for aggression and pummelling enemies left and right staying in the thick of the battle, while being supported by your fellow team members who can clear out larger enemy groups coming for you.

Ability -
Chastise the Wicked – character dashes towards enemy. This skill renews toughness and increases the next Melee Hit by 25% - guaranteed Critical Hit.

PART 01 CONCLUDED ONTO PART 2:- VERMINTIDE!

========================================================================================================================================

VERMINTIDE 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfYBSWAOcZs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTlpd3O6-gE

The game is set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe during the early days of the End Times. The game follows the Heroes of Ubersreik from the first game against the Skaven hordes of Clan Fester and their new allies, the Rotbloods (a Chaos Warband dedicated to Nurgle, the Chaos God of Disease and Decay). The expansion, "Winds of Magic", also introduced the Beastmen, a herd of Chaos mutated humanoids, in search of an object known as the 'Herdstone'.

The core gameplay around Vermintide is going to be inherently familiar to anyone who has played Left 4 Dead. Set in the Warhammer universe, the game pits four survivors from disparate backgrounds come together and bond over their mutual love of running places and murdering rats. Like Left 4 Dead 2, people who have played the first game should be right at home, the core mechanics are mostly undisturbed while the players have more tools at their disposal to bash rats.

Victor Saltzpyre: Likes to think he’s the leader of the group but nobody pays him much mind. Saltzpyre tends to skew towards light, fast weapons as the tools of his trade. Likes purging, Blessed Sigmar, and pistols. Dislikes rats, heresy, and the elf.

Witch Hunter Captain, an all-rounder career focused on bonus damage for marked targets and feeding his party critical hits.

Bounty Hunter A Ranged combat focused career that likes to mix up melee and ranged attacks to feed him critical hits.

Zealot A melee focused career that gets more dangerous as his health gets lower.

Warrior Priest: Saltzpyre’s DLC class. Turns Saltzpyre into a walking tank who can take absurd amounts of punishment at the cost of only being able to equip melee weapons, and then only a variety of hammers. Is one of the few classes that can also heal himself and allies.

Markus Kruber: He was Victor’s bodyguard/escort in the first game and went off the deep end a bit between games when he found out his family had been killed by the rats. Primarily operates out of an alcoholic fugue now. He tends toward infantry weapons like heavy blades, rifles, shields, and two handed weapons like a Warhammer or halberd. Has a swanky hat.

Mercenary: An offensive career that gets bonuses for hitting multiple enemies per swing and increased cleaving power. His active grants temporary health to help soak damage from a boss or vicious wave. A good introductory class, Mercenary allows Kruber to control hordes, damage specials/elites, and provide some support to teammates.

Huntsman: A ranged career that focuses on getting mega damage headshots. He can gain temporary stealth to move around the fight unmolested and turn his blunderbuss into the thundering hammer of god Taal. Gives bonuses to ranged combat, allowing Kruber to stack high single damage for killing elites/bosses, but also stealth ability that lets him get out of jams or reposition himself. Notable for being one of the classes that when built up can put the hurt on boss enemies.

Knight: A defensive career that has damage resistance standard. Has a hilarious charge active with a short cooldown, play this if you love shouting SIRKRUBER! at everyone. Allows Kruber to take punishment and control hordes, as well as protecting allies from incoming damage. Basically, a tank class.

Grail Knight: Kruber’s DLC class, you trade away the ability to hold ranged weapons. In exchange, you can unlock per-match challenges that can buff your team as well as gain speed and damage buffs for yourself in addition to a class ability that is good for dealing heavy single damage

Bardin Goreksson: A dwarf who joined the characters of the first game to try and get them to help find an ancient dwarf hold. He was apparently not successful in this venture. Of all the characters in this game, he seems to be the one who is legitimately loving every minute of this poo poo and having a great time killing rats and norsemen. Uses dwarfy weapons like axes and hammers and rifles, but also gets access to a couple of flame belching guns that run off of the same heat mechanic that Sienna uses.

Ranger Veteran: A ranged focus career that causes special enemies to drop ammo satchels, allowing everyone in the group to maintain their ranged supplies for longer. At higher levels he can opt to turn some ammo drops into healing or stat potions. Bardin’s Ranged class in similar vein to Markus’ Huntsman and Saltzpyre’s Bounty Hunter classes, Ranger Veteran focuses its bonuses around Bardin’s ranged attacks. Unlike those other two, RV is built more around sustained range fire than high damage output.

Ironbreaker A defense focused career that specializes in being an immovable brick shithouse and making GBS threads great gouts of warcrime fire everywhere with a drakegun.

Slayer An offense focused career that gives up a ranged weapon entirely. In exchange for that, he gets the ability to equip a second melee weapon as well as a potent passive that gives him more damage the more he attacks. A high-risk, high-reward class that takes away all but one of Bardin’s ranged weapons. In exchange, you get an active ability that you can basically spam as you build up damage stacks and temporary hit points.

Outcast Engineer: DLC class that gives Bardin a gatling gun, the ability to carry extra bombs, and to give ranged bonuses to allies.

Kerillian: An elf. She is very whiny and complains about everyone else constantly. All the other characters hate her. Pubbies love her because she’s emo Legolas. May or may not be cursed by the magical hellforest she calls home. She uses blades and daggers in various combinations as well as spears and bows.

Waywatcher: A ranged focus career that gives her passive health regeneration. Her active is a trueshot volley that auto-homes in on your target, to compensate the fact that they struck the regular trueshot bow from the game. Kerillian’s default class lets her thin out hordes with sustained ranged attacks while allowing her to snipe off distant or even unseen enemies with her active ability, an enemy-seeking volley shot. Also gives her some minor self-protection capabilities. This is a popular beginner's class.

Handmaiden: A defensive career that focuses on increased dodging ability and stamina regeneration. She can stand people up without being interrupted, which would be a huge deal If not for the fact that basically anyone can do so.Kerillian’s pseudo-support class. Allows her to dodge and juke away from enemies. Gives a substantial buff to her team’s stamina regeneration as well as lets her quickly revive downed teammates. Very useful class on higher difficulties.

Shade: An offensive career that focuses on backstabbing and listening to Evanescence albums on repeat. She can actually do some incredible damage if left to her antics (and if she can get behind the mob) and can oneshot chaos warriors from behind. A class that focuses on high-damage melee strikes. If you can actively work to position yourself well, you can deal significant damage to both hordes and elites/specials.

Sister of the Thorn: One of the stranger and more versatile classes, Thorn Sister allows Kerillian to build up temporary HP while using status effects and her active ability to control enemy movement. This class has a lot of flexible variables.

Sienna Fuegonassus: Is a wizard of the bright college and is an obligate pyromaniac. Sienna is unique in that she does not have traditional ranged weaponry, she uses spells instead which behave in similar fashion but do not use ammunition. Instead she has a heat meter that determines how much she can use her spells. If you over exert yourself you overheat and explode, downing yourself instantly, so don’t overdo it.

Battle Wizard: A ranged focused career that focuses on keeping your heat low to keep you casting more often. Her active is a short range dash.

Pyromaniac: A ranged focused career that focuses less on heat management and moreso on doing high damage in general. Her active is a homing firebolt on a short cooldown that doesn’t build heat.

Unchained: A melee focused career that sacrifices on spell potency to allow you to do more melee damage when you are at high heat. Taking damage builds up heat, so be careful not to accidentally overload yourself by getting tagged by a slave.

NEW PLAYER ADVICE:-

Pennsylvanian posted:

I wrote out guides for another VT community on how to get through Legendary, and some guides for introducing new players to the game.

General tips for new players:

-Sound design is extremely important in this game. Each special has its own set of spawning and active sounds that will initiate once they are on the field and when they are moving or attacking. This is especially important when it comes to listening for where a Blightstormer is casting from or if a Berserker/Plague Rat is part of an incoming horde. Even normal enemies have sound lines that telegraph their attacks, so be quick on the block button when you hear a snarling Skavenslave about to stick a spear in your back. I really recommend keeping the sound on and your settings tailored correctly or this game will be a nightmare.

-Keep up a good pace. Don’t be the guy holding up the team by looking in every corner for health or supplies, forcing all of you to run into more ever-spawning enemies. Likewise, don’t run a million miles ahead, activating enemy spawns for your teammates to deal with as you get hookratted a mile ahead of them.

-You’re going to spend a majority of combat time in this game in melee. Keep your melee weapons out by default unless you’re in a 100% clear spot to use Ranged attacks, using aforementioned sound design while checking around your vicinity for back-spawning enemies that want to hit you while you have your bow out. Even then, only pull your ranged weapons out for short bursts, still preferring your melee weapons. I also really recommend using M+K over controller when getting into Champion difficulty and above. I'm not saying players can't be good with controller on higher difficulties, but being able to snap around to check your six or add a little aftertouch to a melee attack or quickly block an off-screen threat is so much easier with a mouse.

-One of the biggest killers of players is eating hits that were meant for a different player, but still getting caught in the crossfire. Try to control horde groups using abilities, blocking, dodging, stunning, and pushing so that you’re facing down groups that you can handle on your own. This is a really tough-but-essential skill to build once you start getting into Veteran and Champion difficulty.

-Check out this guide for top-level builds: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2034609078

But don’t worry about having the best high-tier gear or running a special build unless you want to start becoming a very effective Champion difficulty player. I’ve beaten every main mission on Legendary, all without red-tier gear or even 300 power gear, so don't worry about getting the shiniest shinies. This guide, however, does show off things like useful stats, talent synergy, and the strengths of different classes. It’s just a good thing to skim if you’re getting analysis paralysis and just need to see that Block Cost Reduction is a useful skill for any class, or you’re overwhelmed by all the different Talent choices, or that certain weapon/class combos are more meant for horde clear or elite killing or whatever.

-Temporary HP is very important. Take a look at your Talents once you get to level 5 with a character and start looking at how to build up temporary hit points as they can turn a character with 25 health into a character that can suddenly survive a series of direct hits.

OK! the big OP is done! lets get to having fun and complaining about :fatshark:

Semantically, "you" is both singular and plural, though syntactically it is always plural. It always takes a verb form that originally marked the word as plural.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.

The more I play Vermintide, the more I genuinely appreciate and enjoy what it's doing, it's got really awesome aesthetics, awesome environments that are truly awe-inspiring, but definitely the real stars of the show are the characters, playing vermintide legitimately feels like I'm going through a really fun Lord of the Rings adventure fantasy novel at it's very best, these characters really shine and make me genuinely love the world and love the adventures and escapades we get into. I really do love how both vermintide and darktide have very different but equally great ways of telling their stories and building their worlds, I think both games have alot to offer storytelling wise, but definitely Vermintide is probably some of the best-written fantasy characters I've experienced in forever.

Its a shame games workshop deleted that world, I wonder if the new Age of Sigmar setting has space for such endearing characters, I dont want golden space marine knights to be the only human faction available in the future. although the new setting looks really incredible and the miniatures are probably the best looking minis in the world right now.

Saltzpyre is really a fucker though lol I love him. Kruber and Bardin are exactly the kind of Gimli-Legolas combo I love in fantasy stories.

I'm definitely in the long haul for both these games.

Warhammer ain't dead. Warhammer Total War was a gigantic hit for the brand and definitely had an influence on GW's decision to bring back Fantasy. The Old World is their new Warhammer Fantasy edition coming soon. It's set a few centuries before Vermintide, though.

oh hey that's cool! I didn't know Total War was such a massive success! I heard that AoS is in a really good place now too so I'm glad tabletop gaming has a good future ahead.

I'm actually getting into 40k kill team tabletop right now, I am definitely open to trying either age of sigmar or the new 'old world' setting down the line, I genuinely hope that the models would be compatible because age of sigmar has astoundingly beatiful minis I would love to get without needing to strictly decide between AoS and WFB.

Can anyone tell me if Darktide is doing the VT2 thing again where you have an ilvl (power level, or whatever they call it now) that determines the most important characteristics of weapons, and presumably a cap on the ilvl you want to hit before you worry about rolling or rerolling traits and secondary stats?

Basically I'm asking if it's more or less the same item progression from VT2 or not.

Woah, I'm just finding out from the OP that gamepass and steam won't have crossplay?

That seems like a massively bad idea. I was planning on getting it on steam, but my friends will probably just play it on gamepass...
Not to mention it splits playerbase quite a bit, and when it eventually leaves the gamepass I can't imagine the left over players that buy it there will have anyone to play with, forcing them to restart on steam. What a dumb move, it actually killed off a lot of my hype.

Tbf this is a general game pass issue, apparently there’s something about the backend that makes cross playing between steam and game pass really difficult and expensive, I don’t know the specifics of it but there’s lots of games that can’t cross play between steam and game pass.

From the test it seems that as you level up you get access to higher rarity gear from the shop.

Not from the test is what the crafting/customization system will be like, still mostly an unknown, although the presumable material you use to change your gear around did drop in the levels.

Yes, the weapon ilevel thing is still in, and the additional wrinkle is that each weapon has like 6 - 7 stats that are also randomized but keyed into said ilevel, so you can have two weapons of the same ilevel with different stat profiles that behave way differently. So it's even less predictable than vt2s standard.

Because this is :fatshark: said stats are bars that fill in with no context as to what the bar full-ness actually represents.

Edit - with regards to why I'm still hyped about the game despite the Fatshark Jank - for anyone who hasn't played the old games, the moment to moment action is still some of the best in the genre.

Edit - with regards to why I'm still hyped about the game despite the Fatshark Jank - for anyone who hasn't played the old games, the moment to moment action is still some of the best in the genre.

For those who spent a good amount of time in the test, how are the character personalities and dialogue feeling? I know FS states that they have even more dialogue than in VT2 but is it overall the same quality that made the 5 so memorable? I know the idea here is you're just some disposable schlub like all the rest in the penal battalions and they went whole-hog into the whole character customization thing, but I'm wondering how it stacks up against the far FAR less customizable but more characterful 5 of VT1 and 2.

Played the new VT2 map last night, part 1 of "Trail of Treachery", and it's really fun! It's a snowy map and all the rats have snow sorta sticking to their fur so things tend to camouflage. We got our asses kicked at presumably the final part of the map because of a couple particularly lovely special spawns. Cool map though!

I think the choice of having alternate voices for each character was a bad one. The actual voice lines for each character are pretty good, but with multiple voice actors per character I cant tell if a voice is coming from the Zealot or the Psyker because theyre both yelling about insane poo poo.

I played the test significantly and i played VT2 a couple of times, Darktide is fine in terms of dialogue and banter VT2 is significatly stronger in that department overall because they’re strictly defined characters with very strong and unique personalities they really nailed their chemistries in a way actual fantasy novelists would struggle to, I was very skeptical at first when people were complaining but playing it a couple times I have to confirm the characters are leagues more interesting overall than in darktide. That might change though in darktide it’s too early to say.

Working as intended.

Looking forward to trying it out tonight. I thought I saw someone say it had some geometry issues like getting stuck, did you run into any of that?

DT feels like it has more characters, and they're each well done imo, but their interactions are disjointed because they're generic responses rather than specific banter. Mostly. There are a few good interactions between specific character archetypes in DT that echo the quality of the VT characters' back and forth, but by necessity they're a minority of lines. Mostly DT characters talk at each other rather than with each other.

New map is fantastic for playing Splatoon with rat blood on the snow :black101:

There was some... jankiness in some areas where you had to drop down a series of rafters that feel like they have some hosed up ground collision, I distinctly remember going down one, sliding/falling 2 stories and just giving a heads up to a friend I was playing with to watch his footing.

I've been saying it since I started playing VT2 at launch: the best thing about the game, bar none, is the quality of the writing and characterization. As jank as Fatshark is and as much as I love everything about the game anyway, it's just leagues better than most fantasy writing out there in games and it does it with what is effectively ambient character dialogue.

I still think about how chilling it was the first time I heard the voice in Drachenfels and how everyone responded to Sienna talking to herself. Or how Saltzpyre and Sienna--or Kerillian and literally everyone else--go from reluctant allies with unambiguous disgust to comrades to genuine friends who care about each other.

Everyone telling Bardin to shut up when he tried singing to eventually getting the earworm and joining in (with Kerillian getting grumpy at herself at having done it and Saltzpyre not quite singing but tone-deafingly humming along) is an amazing payoff.

I'm gonna miss the U5 so much :(

I've not seen any. The map is pretty long though and the finale is a bastard. It's apparently easy for the torch to get lost and it's hard to find it when you've got 3 chaos warriors and a bile troll bearing down on you.

For what it's worth I liked the map a ton. It does some interesting things and it's not terribly annoying for an escort quest.

This is incredible, the Slayer and Shade ones are perfect and remain true since Day 1.

If we don't get a VT3 I will riot, no matter how long it takes. There just aren't any games out there with melee combat this good, and as neat as Darktide will be, I'm sure, I still have some reservations about what the Legend/Cata gameplay will look like and whether or not it will hold up in the same way.

The autonomous sleigh is really funny to me for some reason, like how it just ends up at the right place after we shoved it over a snowy hill.

It's weird going from deep rock galactic, where everyone is super helpful and teamworky, back to vermintide 2 where people run off, die and rage quit. I think it's the end stat screen which makes people desperate to score as many kills as possible to make numbers go up. Someone said that was gone in Darktide.
