ISDN BRI ought to have been enough for anyone

what is BRI

Kazinsal
Dec 13, 2011

basic rate interface. two full duplex 64 kbps channels that can either do packet switched data or circuit switched wideband voice, and one full duplex 16 kbps channel for signalling and auxiliary data packets. plus sync bits and stuff like that

we made an enormous mistake giving every moron on the planet effectively infinite bandwidth 24/7 no matter the location

oh, so a method where you could use ISDN with telephone connectivity, but still have 2x 64kbit?

Graphic user interfaces.

They locked us on the path to smartphones and thus ruined the world.

basically you got two 64 kbps bearer channels that you could mix and match with. full 128 kbps data, 64 kbps data + one call, or no data + two calls. a full ISDN primary rate interface was 23x 64 kbps bearer channels + one 64 kbps control channel for 1536 kbps. add in 8 kbps for line signalling and hey presto you have a T1

e: my mistake I'm an idiot it's not wideband because of nyquist sampling. serves me right for trying to nerd out about 1960s telephony technology at 2am

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back...

GUI does not make poo poo accessible.

Being able to pipe text to any output device would do wonders, especially if it made developers pay attention to how much poo poo they are expecting the user to have in their view.
