https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WlI24rv__g A song about how great Ghengis Khan was Mongolian throat singing is really cool. I got to hear it live once at a cultural fair and it was so awesome. In Korea, there is a* traditional song called 아리랑 (Arirang). *Actually, there are approximately 3,600 of them apparently. If you ever go to Korea, it's hard to miss. There are a lot of songs I would start listening to, really enjoy, and then suddenly hear the Arirang kick in and have to shake my head that it was another Arirang remix, and then continue to enjoy. There's some disagreement on what the original version is or what arirang even means, but this is perhaps the most widely-accepted "standard" version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f99tZQ8XtGM Here's the BTS version for a more modern take: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZOQ6HjHEC0 A lot of versions are based on locations. My favorite version of Arirang is Miryang Arirang. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhdAI4LRJdo Here's a jazz version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOR5V_0E1bc Miryang's city mascot is the personification of Arirang, so you know it's a big deal. https://m.cafe.daum.net/chrstory/eCTG/40?listURI=%2Fchrstory%2FeCTG If you visit the temple in the city, they have some information stands about the song and stuff. Some Japanese traditional songs: 「さくら」 (Sakura [Cherry blossom]): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK51LblcEOw 「古城の月」(Kojou no Tsuki [Moon over the Ruined Castle]): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irJx7aV5uLo Apparently the composer wrote this at only 21 after seeing the moon shining over a ruined castle, but the lyrics were written by someone else inspired by another different ruined castle. Unfortunately, the composer died only 2 years later at 23. These are just a few songs and only from part of Asia, but this is the thread for posting cool traditional songs (and/or their stories) from anywhere! Share with me some cool traditional music!
