Baileys is the thing I miss most about being teetotal. As my teetotalness of the past 17 years is because of bad reaction to alcohol (allergic reaction - tachycardia, feeling the blood thumping round my body for hours afterwards etc) not 'clean living' or religion, I was happy to discover last year that I can actually cope with the special Christmas cream with baileys in it. Brandy or cointreau cream however sets me off badly so need to avoid completely. Meanwhile: Can any of you good folk who know anything about electrics tell me: do RCDs have an 'ampage' in the way that fuses do? The water heater over the bathroom sink in the guest room of our block of flats is kaput and being replaced today. Anyway, it seems to be wired into the same circuit as the ground floor sockets and when the cleaner's tried to use it, it's been causing the RCDs to go and also blowing out the front door number keypad so muggins here gets 2000 old ladies knocking on my door when I'm trying to work complaining that their friends can't get in or whatever. My concern is that once the heater is replaced, it'll start off again if for some reason it is overloading the ampage of the RCD **if** such a thing happens!

Take a photo of the one that's tripping? kecske posted:RCDs trip on earth fault, not overcurrent. Older domestic consumer units will have a rack of MCBs (which do trip on overcurrent) all protected by one single RCD. If its the RCD that's operating rather than the MCBs then it's not an issue with amperage, but current is escaping somewhere it shouldn't. Thanks chaps. I can't take a photo as it is too high up! But I can ask the electrician when he gets here about that. Current escaping sounds dangerous! I have a problem with the old ladies that we had an ancient fuse box in there. We changed it to RCDs earlier this year and now it has been tripping which after much experimentation and deduction I have finally tracked to the water heater (and that is definitely bust). But the old ladies are convinced that the electricians put the RCDs in wrong and I'm saying that no, the RCDs are doing their job and the old fuses weren't! What it is to be a young old lady instead of an old old lady.

Guavanaut posted:Breakers and RCBOs (RCD and breaker in one) have a rated current in the same way that a fuse wire does, and a curve, which is how long and by how much you have to exceed that by and for in order for it to pop. So a 32A breaker might withstand 40A for two seconds when a motor starts up, or 35A for a minute, but anything exceeding those will throw it. Earth leakage - also sounds dangerous (I guess that's the same as 'current going where it shouldn't' ) - I'll ask electrician about that too when he comes!

My relatives are a complete mixed bag from raving loony left to raving loony right. Dad was always quite leftish on most things and on gays in the 70s he would say stuff like 'they need sympathy and understanding' (even though he thought they should stay celibate - he knew several celibate gays from people he knew in monasteries). Mum an ardent royalist and back in the 70s 'lock up gays' now she's much more ok with gays, trans, anyone really. Mum refers to Israel, my aunt - also 85 - refuses to call it Israel and refers to Palestine. My card-carrying tory party member brother is also pro-Palestinian. My sister-in-law and I agreed to a large extent on various social issues, but she veered off into racism and UKIP while I obviously didn't. One of my nans was ardent Labour always going on about 'the nobs' and headed up a strike at her factory during the general strike, but a terrible racist (perfect UKIPer had they been going back then). Grandad - her husband was a Working Class Tory - you should know your place. Meanwhile my other nan, not a racist at all, but always voted tory, my grandad on her side used to be a supporter of The Daily Worker (which morphed into the Morning Star) and she used to tell me how on weekends in her street (in a midlands town), all the women were tory and all the men were labour and they would stand at opposite sides of the street calling each other names.

The Scum is one of the worst for going on about scroungers and strivers and claimants yet must have a readership including claimants! I think there's little point trying to refute some of these with evidence - the right seriously do not give a fig for data and evidence. Makes me laugh because a rightwing friend posted something on fb yesterday saying there was no point trying to argue with the woke left because they didn't care about evidence and 'the silent majority' all agree with her. I've coughed since childhood. I kept the whole estate up for a month coughing non-stop all night when I was about 14, let alone my sister with whom I shared a bedroom wanting to brain me (she got her own back a few years later when I was doing shift work and had to get up early and she would roll in from a night out and talk non-stop at me when I needed to sleep). It's been particularly bad for the past couple of months (negative covid tests!) but for the last 10 days has been much better. I'm concluding the chronic coughing is possibly reflux as it's worse when I lie down and even more worse if lie on my right side. I have a deviated nasal septum (as have a lot of people) and think that also contributes in some way. (just read yours above - should have refreshed LOL) Maybe your baby bent your nose a bit without breaking it? (Caveat: I am not a medical doctor!) I got some cheapo cough med with guaifenesin in it that's really helped, and also omniprazole for occasional reflux (I get a box of 28 once a year from the GP and just take occasionally esp after pizza). My bolding - because as we all know govt/big company reassurances are 100% reliable. Not. [quote] Ministers quietly announced in October it would begin collecting and processing personal information from people’s smart and traditional meters. Experts say it sets a ‘dangerous precedent’ and will affect smart meter customers more because their devices contain more sensitive data. When smart meters first arrived, some feared they would hold too much information on households as they track energy usage in real time. Experts warn this could leave homes vulnerable to burglars if they managed to hack the gadget and work out from readings when nobody was in. But customers were assured the data could only be viewed by their supplier. The introduction of the Energy Bills Support Scheme and Energy Price Guarantee means that information will now be shared with the Government. The first scheme gives customers £66 a month in winter to help with bills, while the guarantee, brought in by former prime minister Liz Truss, caps average energy bills at £2,500. Ministers want to use meter data to help identify fraudsters, such as those who claim energy bills support on an unused second property, for example. On the assumption that kite flying moving BBC to all online is going to cause mega complaining once the hoipolloi get to hear about it, and working on the assumption that 'they' know that, what is the real 'phew they've done something less bad' move they really want to make? In my block of flats only about 2 of 19 flats (including me) have internet. The TV is the main companion for several of the late 80/90 year olds in the block. So if it's not happening until 2030s that still means a lot of now - 70/80 somethings will be affected. And people in these age groups tend to watch a LOT of BBC. If it's just BBC, presumably all the channels I usually watch will still be on the satellite (hoping freesat sticks around for years to come!)

"following" leaves a lot of scope for interpretation. Couple of examples - a colleague was walking home one evening after dark (winter - so it wasn't late) and a guy followed her, came right up behind her, and when she got home the back of her coat was covered in ejaculate. Another time, I got mugged one evening. I had to come home again the same way the following evening en route from tube to my home and a guy decided it would be a good laugh to follow me - and it was deliberate. He's lucky he didn't die that night as I was so hyped (had been thrashing my leg with a rolled up newspaper for the entire tube ride I was so wound up). There's also the complete disconnect some guys have with women: had a discussion maybe it was even on here a few years ago, many guys trying to do the right thing if going the same way as a woman late evening will WALK FAST up behind her (ie 'following') and overtake because they have the weird idea that makes her feel safer when in fact she is actually petrified and if possible will start crossing the street or walking faster. Some of the guys in the discussion were amazed to find that what they felt was helping was in fact terrifying. There's 'going the same way' and 'following' and late evenings they don't feel much different to a woman (or men get followed too - a male friend with long hair was carrying a shoulder bag with LPs in it and got followed one evening - said it's the first time he had even an inkling of what it felt like). Another time, I was walking along the road a few yards behind a black guy and I had the most terrible frog in my throat (something I have suffered from on and off over the years) and had to keep clearing my throat. He turned round and glared at me obviously thinking I was following him and making noises at him, but I wasn't! Just going the same way and having to clear my throat so I could breathe!
