Is it true that as an elderly millennial, 80-90 kids are the last to understand how computers work inside and out as well as operating and file systems? I find that very hard to believe. I keep catching snippets that "the kids these days" only use tablets and phones and have no idea how to even navigate or troubleshoot an actual computer. The article is always about how that's going to cause a gap in skilled computer touchers. I find that hilariously appropriate but also kind of sad. Out of my younger brothers friend circle of a few dozen only one know how filepaths and poo poo work and it's because he's a computer toucher for a living and mods games for fun.

My cutoff tends to be "managed to make it to adolescence before the internet really started to take over everything". The dates are a little fuzzy because anything resembling broadband took a long rear end time to rollout to areas the telecoms couldn't easily milk.

It's essentially that nerds understand their way around a desktop environment and non-nerds don't. Same as it ever was.

When you said "desktop environment", it reminded me of playing ZombieMUD on Telnet in the college computer lab while my mom was in class. Fun millennial times.

Yeah there’s a specific generation that, in order to do innocuous poo poo like “steal music” or “chat with friends over AIM”, had to have some basic working knowledge of computers. It’s pretty comparable to how there’s a cohort of silents and boomers who know all seem to know how cars work as general knowledge, because basic maintenance was just expected to be done yourself.
