I still remember watching TUF 1 in my university dorm common room when he gutted out of Mike Swick’s guillotine, then the finale the following weekend at home. I was rooting for him the whole time. Please don’t let this be some Chris Benoit poo poo; I want to remember him as half the fight that made western MMA.

In a subsequent interview, he said doctors at a different facility discovered a potentially life-threatening staph infection that required intravenous antibiotics and a lengthy recovery period.

Tape Delay Kickboxing Volume 5 Krush.144 - 2022-12-18 Korakuen Hall, Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan Krush is K-1’s regular show for lower-ranked fighters. They run monthly in Korakuen Hall to the point that the 12 shows for 2023 are already on K-1’s calendar. Krush has its own champions separate from “K-1 WGP Champions” and Krush shows are almost entirely Japanese talent. The main event for Krush.144 is the first title defense for the 10th Krush Super Featherweight Champion, “POWER OF DREAMS’s Karate Kid” Chihiro Nakajima (6-3, 4 KO). He became the champion when he won two tournament fights in one night in January 2022 to capture the title. At THE MATCH 2022, he lost a decision to the Shootboxing Super Featherweight champion, Yuki Kasahara, and in the process suffered a broken nose that took 6 months to heal up before he could return to Krush to defend his title. This included missing the K-1 World GP Super Featherweight tournament in September. Nakajima has a Kyokushin Karate background including Kyokushin World Cup titles in 2017 and 2018. Nakajima’s opponent is “KO Machine” Narufumi Nishimoto who brings a moderate 14-8-2 record in but has 12 KOs in those 14 wins. He also had a karate background as a youth, but switched to K-1 at a younger age. His last fight was a tournament reserve bout at the K-1 WGP in September, where he defeated Naoki Yamamoto by decision after knocking him down in round 3. That tournament was won by Leona Pettas, who became the top of the heap for Super Featherweights in K-1. Both men will be looking to challenge Pettas if they’re able to win here. K-1 Basics: Most fights are 3 3-minute rounds with a single 3-minute extra round if it’s a draw. 3 knockdowns in a round is a TKO, or 2 if it’s a tournament fight. Judges are fairly liberal with 10-10 round scoring, so you will often see fights scored 30-30 or 30-29. Official rules state that the judges must pick a winner at the end of the extra round, including looking back on the earlier rounds of the fight if necessary. Kickboxing rules: knees are legal, elbows are not. Clinch must be broken with an immediate strike or the ref will separate, and fighters are now allowed to pull the neck of the opponent down to deliver a strike. Fights highlighted in bold were ones that I found particularly entertaining. Jesus that loving sucks. I'll always remember his two bonkers, bloody but also weirdly good natured fights with Krystof Soszynski. But yeah, he was an unintentional gatekeeper. Like someone above said, he fought and lost to fully four people who would go on to hold the belt (Evans, Griffin, Machida and Jones) and three who had held it (Ortiz, Coleman and Silva). Not a single one of those was a main event or anywhere near the peak of those guys careers, aside from Silva, who crushed him effortlessly. There's a Tom Waits song esque quality to his career. He wasn't even the bridesmaid, he was a stand in at a wedding rehearsal. Yet the sport is absolutely built on him in a very specific way and guys like him in a more general way and I wish he'd gotten a little more recognition. Hope he finds the peace that he didn't find here.

RIP Bonnar Totally unsurprised about the news that the UFC totally hosed him over and wouldn't help when he was at his lowest, near the end. Dana wouldn't have a loving penny if he'd not gone out and put on the fight of the century with Forrest. As for the Covid stance and whatnot, these things happen when you get your head punched for money.
