I shall note that the Janet Todd fight has been postponed because Janet Todd contracted the Novel Coronavirus and as such they moved Reug Reug to the Lead Card of the Friday night show rather than the Saturday morning show.

Tape Delay Kickboxing

Ancient Japanese TV contracts and corresponding ABEMA streaming rules make it almost impossible to follow premier kickboxing organizations K-1 and RISE outside of Japan. Fortunately, they do tend to upload the fights for free on Youtube 7-10 days after they happen in Japan.

This series shall, where possible, allow you to watch the shows in order as if you were watching live, without spoilers. So if you stay away from kickboxing news (not hard) and wait for these posts a week later, it can be just as thrilling as being there.

Volume 1
K-1 WORLD GP 2022 in Osaka - 2022-12-03

The final major K-1 show of the year features the first-ever eight-man one-night bantamweight Grand Prix, which in K-1 is at 117 pounds, with the winner being crowned the K-1 Bantamweight champion. The tournament was full of entertaining fights, and I have also highlighted the most exciting of the 18 non-tournament fights in bold. The numbers next to each fight are the weights, in pounds.

K-1 Basics: Most fights are 3 3-minute rounds with a single 3-minute extra round if it’s a draw. 3 knockdowns in a round is a TKO, or 2 if it’s a tournament fight. Judges are fairly liberal with 10-10 round scoring, so you will often see fights scored 30-30 or 30-29. Kickboxing rules: knees are legal, elbows are not. Clinch must be broken with an immediate strike or the ref will separate.

Tape Delay Kickboxing

While this series is primarily for Japanese shows, another type of easily accessible kickboxing is the stuff that streams live for free. If I find any of reasonable quality, I’ll include them here.

Beyond Kickboxing event calendar: https://beyondkick.com/schedule

Volume 2
ENFUSION 117 and ENFUSION TALENTS 99 - 2022-12-16

Le Meridien Airport Rd, Dubai, UAE

“The Most Exciting Show of Kickboxing.” You could have theoretically watched this one live, as all Enfusion shows air on Facebook live in most countries. A regional European promotion, Enfusion is a Dutch company that mostly runs in the Netherlands but has also run shows in places like Germany, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Spain and Belgium. It was founded in 2011 after Edwin van Os sold his previous brand, It’s Showtime, to Glory, then just went and started another promotion. Its most prominent recent appearance was as the co-promoter of the first 3 Glory Rivals shows with Glory in 2022.

This show features a 4-man lightweight tournament on the Talents show and the main card features the Enfusion welterweight champion Mohamed Touchassie and middleweight champion Mohammad Ghaedibardeh in action in non-title fights against unranked opponents. Bantamweight Champion Sarel de Jong is also in action in a non-title fight on the Talents card.

Timestamps provided for the file after each fight listing, I cannot find a button on Facebook to link to a specific spot. Bolded fights are ones that I found particularly entertaining.

Enfusion Rules Basics: Kickboxing rules. Muay Thai sweeps are allowed. Clinch work is allowed as long as “the work is active” and it is “attractive to the spectator,” at the referee’s discretion. Weight class names and limits align with the MMA weight classes you’re used to.

Tape Delay Kickboxing Volume 3
RISE 163 - 2022-12-10

Korakuen Hall, Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan

Simliar to K-1 with Krush, RISE numbered shows happen approximately monthly in Korakuen Hall and generally feature fighters lower on the ladder. A few times a year they have bigger shows under the RISE WORLD SERIES banner, and their biggest show of the year is RISE EL DORADO.

Unfortunately, due to TV Contracts or whatever, these fights don’t have commentary or on-screen graphics. The first fighter listed in each line is the red corner, the second fighter is the blue corner. The ring announcer does announce when the round has a minute, 30 seconds, and 10 seconds left. At least RISE’s fight card page does list credentials for each fighter, though it does not list their records.

The main event features a lightweight fight between #3 ranked Kan Nakamura, whose nickname is “Human Beast” and dislikes ghosts, and #6 ranked super lightweight Sumiya Ito moving down to meet him. Ito is known as the “Genius Bad Boy” and has a pro record of 3-3 with 2 KOs but also claims to have an “underground kickboxing” record of 17-0 with 15 KOs. He is also 0-1 in Ganryujima Moat Fights. Nakamura comes in with a record of 12-5, 11 KOs.

The lone women’s fight on the card features the women fighting in MMA gloves instead of kickboxing gloves, marking the first time I have seen a “kickboxing with MMA gloves” match. Fights marked in bold are ones that I found particularly entertaining.

RISE Basics: Most fights are 3 3-minute rounds with a single 3-minute extra round if it’s a draw. 3 knockdowns in a round is a TKO, or 2 if it’s a tournament fight. Judges are fairly liberal with 10-10 round scoring, so you will often see fights scored 30-30 or 30-29. K-1 Kickboxing rules: knees are legal, elbows are not. Clinch must be broken with an immediate strike or the ref will separate.

MAROOMS presents KNOCK OUT 2022 vol. 8 - 2022-12-11
Korakuen Hall, Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan

KNOCK OUT is a tier below K-1 and RISE, and runs all of their shows out of either Korakuen Hall or Shinjuku FACE these days. The difference is that they run both kickboxing and Muay Thai on the same card, so for Muay Thai rules they are the top promotion in Japan.

This show has four title fights, as well as a 5-round non-title main event. The main event pits KNOCK OUT RED Super Bantamweight Champion “Speed Actor” Eisaku Ogasawara (40-7-1, 21 KO) fighting up a weight class at Featherweight against Chartpayak Saksatun (80-29-3, 17 KO), who seems to be the #9 ranked Featherweight at Rajadamnern Stadium but does not have any titles listed to his name. Ogasawara is on a 9-fight winning streak dating back to February 2020. Chartpayak is coming to Japan for the first time.

Fights highlighted in bold were ones that I found particularly entertaining.

KNOCK OUT Basics:
- KNOCK OUT BLACK is kickboxing rules. No elbows. Knee strikes cannot be delivered when clinching under the opponent's armpits. KNOCK OUT BLACK rules do allow you to hold the opponent’s neck while kneeing.
- KNOCK OUT RED is Muay Thai rules. Elbows allowed. Knee strikes can be delivered when clinching under the opponent’s armpits. Title fights are 5 3-minute rounds.
- Most fights have one extra round in the event of a draw, and the standard Japanese scoring that commonly awards 10-10 scores for close rounds. In extra rounds, the rules state that the judge must choose a winner and cannot score a draw.
- I couldn’t find anything written in the rules about the length of the clinch for BLACK or RED but in practice the referees break them a moment after the action stalls, which is not typically how clinches are officiated in traditional Muay Thai.
- The color of the gloves indicates if it’s BLACK (KB) or RED (MT) but I also noted it next to the weight of the fight on each line.

Tape Delay Kickboxing Volume 5
Krush.144 - 2022-12-18

Korakuen Hall, Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan

Krush is K-1’s regular show for lower-ranked fighters. They run monthly in Korakuen Hall to the point that the 12 shows for 2023 are already on K-1’s calendar. Krush has its own champions separate from “K-1 WGP Champions” and Krush shows are almost entirely Japanese talent.

The main event for Krush.144 is the first title defense for the 10th Krush Super Featherweight Champion, “POWER OF DREAMS’s Karate Kid” Chihiro Nakajima (6-3, 4 KO). He became the champion when he won two tournament fights in one night in January 2022 to capture the title. At THE MATCH 2022, he lost a decision to the Shootboxing Super Featherweight champion, Yuki Kasahara, and in the process suffered a broken nose that took 6 months to heal up before he could return to Krush to defend his title. This included missing the K-1 World GP Super Featherweight tournament in September. Nakajima has a Kyokushin Karate background including Kyokushin World Cup titles in 2017 and 2018.

Nakajima’s opponent is “KO Machine” Narufumi Nishimoto who brings a moderate 14-8-2 record in but has 12 KOs in those 14 wins. He also had a karate background as a youth, but switched to K-1 at a younger age. His last fight was a tournament reserve bout at the K-1 WGP in September, where he defeated Naoki Yamamoto by decision after knocking him down in round 3. That tournament was won by Leona Pettas, who became the top of the heap for Super Featherweights in K-1. Both men will be looking to challenge Pettas if they’re able to win here.

Official rules state that the judges must pick a winner at the end of the extra round, including looking back on the earlier rounds of the fight if necessary. Kickboxing rules: knees are legal, elbows are not. Clinch must be broken with an immediate strike or the ref will separate, and fighters are now allowed to pull the neck of the opponent down to deliver a strike.

Fights highlighted in bold were ones that I found particularly entertaining.

Preliminary Fights

Also, I spent an hour nailing down the SHOOT BOXING rules so that I could start following it and posting about it, it's a cool sport with cool rules and I think it would be popular but only tiny Japanese guys do it.

Shoot Boxing
Rules: Fights are 3 or 5 3-minute rounds. Punches, kicks, elbows, and knees are legal. Additionally, fighters are allowed to execute throws, chokes, and joint submissions provided the only part of their body touching the canvas is their feet. This means that fights can end via submission (rarely) and that there is a scoring component for throws (Shoot Point) and near-submissions (Catch Point).

Scoring: Round scores can go from 10-10 even as far as 10-6 in either direction. The score is translated to 10-point-must after scoring with the following events:
- 1 point: Forward throw with a referee “Shoot” call (Shoot Point)
- 1 point: Near-submission with a referee “Catch” call (Catch Point)
- 2 points: Backward throw with a referee “Shoot” call (i.e. a German suplex)
- 2 points: Knockdown due to a strike
- 3 points: Forward throw that leads to a knockdown (opponent can’t get up immediately and must take an 8-count)
- 4 points: Backward throw that leads to a knockdown
- 1 point: General advantage in the round (i.e. the way you’d score a boxing or kickboxing fight a 10-9, gets superseded by strike knockdown)
- Standard point deductions for fouls can be included

After the round they tally up all the points if there are multiple events and convert that to 10-point-must and record it.
Examples:
- Fighter A scores a backward throw (2), Fighter B scores a catch (1), round is scored 10-9 for Fighter A
- Fighter A gets a knockdown (2) and a forward throw (1), round is scored 10-7 for Fighter A
- There are no scoring events and neither fighter has a significant advantage in striking, round is scored 10-10

I'm not 100% confident I won't find out months from now that something I have there is wrong, because all the information is only in Japanese. But I was also surprised that a single clean throw is basically the same as winning a round. It's crazier to me that sanshou counts a throw the same as a clean strike. Like, is a clean jab worth a full point? That makes your "point fighters" thing make sense, that's such a heavy weighting.

Cygames presents RISE WORLD SERIES / SHOOTBOXING-KINGS 2022 - 2022-12-25

Ryugoku Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan

For the final big show of the year, RISE decided to give the fans a DOUBLE CO-PROMOTION and raise the stakes by inviting both big GLORY names as well as big SHOOT BOXING names. And Shoot Boxing rules, which meant that I had to figure out… What ARE the Shoot Boxing rules? Fortunately for you, that means that I now have an English summary of Shoot Boxing rules and I can start covering them in this series going forward.

The main card of the show is 6 RISE vs. GLORY fights, headlined by Japanese star Kento Haraguchi. Kento’s record after he lost the first bout of his career is 22 wins, 2 losses to Petch. His opponent is former GLORY featherweight champion Serhiy Adamchuk, who also has 3 losses to Petch on his record. Adamchuk fought once in 2020 and 2021 and lost, and this will be his only bout in 2022. Petch is taking on the recently retired 30-year-old Kosei Yamada in what is billed as Yamada’s Final Match.

The other portion of the card features 8 RISE x SB fights, with 3 under RISE rules and 5 under Shoot Boxing rules. Tenshin Nasukawa’s 16-year-old brother Ryujin, who has already lost a fight and is therefore the Failson of the family, is also in action here. The opening fights include the RISE King of Rookie 2022 finals.

The Youtube copies of the fights have no commentary. Fight rules are marked next to the weight at the end of the line as KB (RISE) or SB (Shoot Boxing). Fights highlighted in bold were ones that I found particularly entertaining.
