Welcome to December! What a slate we have this month. But before we get to any of that, let us first welcome a new writer https://twitter.com/thesnlnetwork/status/1598829601173536768 https://twitter.com/matt_a_la_mode/status/1598809298452324359 Hoping this helps the writing improve for the second half of the season, as it's been a bit lacking so far. I would also note that all the musical guests this month are SNL Sophomores; SZA last guested 5 years ago, December 9 2017 (James Franco), Brandi Carlile's first outing was in last season on October 23 2021 (Jason Sudeikis), and Yeah Yeah Yeahs are returning after 13 years, when they first played 8H way back on April 11 2009 (Zac Efron). SZA did also appear again with DJ Khaled when he was MG on the S44 finale, though she wasn't a billed MG. Trivia! Tonight! Hype! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc7rcdxmcvQ She's an octuple threat! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owPyo-x_OH4&t=1s Actually a nonuple threat, as she can do all that in just 15 seconds for an air-only variant promo! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYzaV9rgilY And of course, your classic Thursday promos, no air promos I've seen from this shoot for a change https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMZkd64UdEE And you know we have those Wednesday read-through photos And I'm fairly hype but reserved for next week... Tonight's Vintage is Billie Eilish from December 11 2021. But fret not! Next week, to compliment our throwback live show, we will also be getting a proper throwback Vintage. Enjoy the show!

A bit underwhelmed by hosts/musical guests, Steve Martin aside, but sometimes that leads to better than expected episodes. Just glad we don’t have a bunch more pointless double duty episodes.

...they're not mutually exclusive? You can think they're both bunk?

Well, that was probably a first for SNL.

Okay, was not expecting the actresses' stunt doubles to get acknowledged in-universe. That was funny.

"You're telling me she's a forty-eight-year-old third grader who's clapping cheeks with a cat?!" is definitely a sentence nobody has ever said before. This Hello Kitty sketch is weird. Also, "she's measured in APPLES!?"

i was truly not expecting the Hello Kitty sketch to go that hard Molly, Punkie and Devon really do not excel in live sketches though tbh

The Keenan and Kelly skit landed and so did that fake Arby's ad afterwards. I was honestly very surprised with the sketches this week. It was learning less on "improv skit that goes nowhere" and more into that "skewing pop culture". But the hello kitty skit is beat for beat the "I wanna be the joker" wedding skit, only instead of Jeff Probst, it's Natasha Lyonne, but it had a better payoff with the new york callbacks.

The Arby's ad spot was funny because they were like justifying charging $10 for 5 roast beef sandwiches that were 5 for $5 like 10-15 years ago.
|
# ? Dec 4, 2022 15:42 |
|
I mean, I haven't had Arby's in years but I'd think $10 for 5 is still a great deal.
|
# ? Dec 4, 2022 15:43 |

It's a good deal considering inflation too. The sandwiches are still tasty.

Arby's 5 for 5 got me through college. Also probably got me permanent heart damage.

Some thoughts on Kirstie Alley's first hosting stint in 1991, and the legacy of NBC's late late programming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=993nvsfwvnY Il Cantore is simultaneously not about Kirstie, but the servers' antics, and all about Kirstie, as the willing object of their relentless affections. Her first episode, someone messed up and mistimed the show in a big bad way. You could probably run it as a Vintage with almost no sketch cuts once you removed the band shots and 5 minute goodnights. Though her improv in the goodnights is charming (but Farley's drunken obnoxiousness is hard to take.) I remember way back in the alt.tv.snl newsgroup days, early 2000s, someone authoritatively claiming her ep running short was due to having too many Clarence Thomas sketches and one being cut, which I took completely at face value at the time. SNL misinformation memories~ That episode also has a unique "billboard" Next Week, which I'm pretty sure was not used on any other live episodes, though it could have been used in contemporary reruns. The "ticket" Next Week had been first introduced two episodes before this and returned the next live show. It uses the same taxi traffic video background. https://twitter.com/gecafe/status/1600842310174273536 The Candice Bergen ep was not the only "SNL Classic" they ran during this time, as this card from the end of that rip (presumably from the start of such a repeat that was also on the original tape) indicates. I also recall seeing episode numbers for other 70s eps that would have been in late 91, which I was starting to catalog before I lost access to that resource. Each episode, live and rerun alike, had a unique episode number and was a tape on the shelf. This is how Bill Murray comes out in 1987 saying it's the 500th broadcast, despite the 500th live show still being 14 years away. Many (though not all) of NBC's listings for their AN (All Night) SNL broadcasts included the episode number, and I was scanning through them earlier this Summer, trying to figure out when this practice ended. My current best guess is sometime around 2007-2008. I hastily comped together a few of the screengrabs I got, really kicking myself for not capping the entire AN run (Sept 98-Dec 06) Pour one out for the final AN. Being replaced with Poker After Dark and Reel Talk is as ignoble an end as they come. What was incredibly frustrating was how my local station never aired SNL AN. I asked the station manager why not and he said they made more money on their own programming than they'd make in SNL. They immediately carried Poker After Dark when it started Sidebar: NBC used to have an overnight programming block called All Night. During the week, after whatever the 30-minute show after Conan was over, they ran the previous week's Leno and Conan, Saturdays after SNL they ran a classic SNL, and Sundays they ran Meet the Press and Dateline. They do still run MtP on Sunday nights, but they discontinued the others years ago SCTV reruns were what informally replaced Later (a show originally hosted by Bob Costas from 88-94, then Greg Kinnear from 94-96, then a 3+ year parade of guest hosts, before ending with Cynthia Garrett, who did it until around 2001 I think.) They had the SCTV reruns under the "Later" banner. Carson Daly's Last Call formally replaced Later in 2002. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoFUuJdm9bs I watched nearly every guest-hosted Later. The joke was that everyone who lived in Burbank had to do the show like jury duty. I remember so vividly, one night Rob Schneider hosted, and he was really... it was bad. Really bad. I'm sure I taped it but I haven't seen it in ~25 years. Anyway. RIP Kirstie. pwn fucked around with this message at 15:17 on Dec 8, 2022 |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKr4ZIpoktE They're here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbTV7jDoFIw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-4YwDqE8Q4 And hey, NBC has even put up a brief blooper reel. https://twitter.com/nbcsnl/status/1601336036423917568 These two monsters of comedy return to the SNL stage tonight, Short for his fourth time and Martin for his, I guess, 18th? Probably? Let me check (Checks) 16! 16 times hosting. One of those, in 1986, was with Chevy Chase and Martin Short. Sadly Chevy is not likely to show up tonight, not live at least, but I'm sure there will be some cameos. Would not be surprised to see Selena Gomez pop in. Unrelated but here's a cute video of this year's cast photo, which was shot after last week's show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlR1QtvD7Ts Cast photos are usually shot a bit later in the season, odd that it was done so early. Probably insurance in case poo poo hits the fan and the show shuts down again. Back to tonight's show, the return of Saturday Today covering the standby line https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uxu2rTVhq4I (It's 1080p but I just uploaded it so it may be a few minutes before the full HD version has processed.) There weren't really air-only promos this week. The Tuesday promo was a pretty straightforward :15 cutdown of the web version, and the one Thursday promo that's been airing the past couple days (Steve Martin's smell) just has two extra seconds at the end. I capped both but I'm hesitant to put them up if there's nothing unique. Often the air version of those Tuesday promos will have alternate takes and/or lines, not this week. But between Tuesday and Thursday is Wednesday, and Wednesday means that the hosts and cast read through all the scripts, and here is photographic evidence thereof [timg]https://i.imgur.com/Ldmo8dV.jpg[/img] drat dude, enjoy the show!

I don't know if it's my local feed or what but I'm trying to check it out with my husband, we're watching out near Seattle and there's a full 2 second desync and it's too jarring to watch Edit: of course as I post it's fixed. The whole cold open and first two minutes of the hosts were totally off

Yeah it was really hosed up for the entire cold open. I thought it might have been Hulu but everything else was synced appropriately.

I genuinely don't understand the Selena Gomez hype. She has absolutely no personality. I tried watching the first few episodes of Only Murders, and I had to stop because she just brings negative charisma.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with White Christmas, but my wife and her mother watch it every year and it's a running family joke how agonizing it is for me. And specifically awful is a song called "Snow," the very song they just mocked, so SNL killed at least one viewer tonight.
