I was talking to Cabbages and Kings about this before, I have a few really cool (YMMV) curios I'd like to offer as prizes. For starters I have a huge collection of mask microphones and I wanted to offer one up to this here crew. You little shits can plug this into your little vocoder poo poo or whatevers. It's the central scrutinizer mic.

Has a large diaphragm mic element on the inside. And 1/8" or XLR connector, as you can see. You're supposed to whisper into it and have it connected to a laptop with a bespoke version of Dragon on it. But I bet somebody can come up with a clever use for it here.

Here's my old work setup. It's a more contemporary mic and I've swaddled it in fleece to dampen the sound.

Anyway, I thought I could add a couple really choice pieces of junk and offer them as prizes, this maybe being one of them.

Is there any way to attach it to your face? I'm sure you could rig something up but I'm honestly kinda perplexed by the whole thing. Intrigued as well though.

Well if you want a mic you can permanently attach to your face you could try a pilot's mic that's built into the mask. But no, not off the shelf. You can always rig something.

It isn't really the central scrutinizer mic, apparently that was a mic inside a hat. I just think it would be a good one for that purpose. Joe's Garage was a rock opera that had a central (heheh) role played by a person whispering into the mic, he was the "central scrutinizer" and I always felt like a singer or a voice that only whispers may be a bit of a shtick, but it may be good, depends. If you want a mic for whispering into, this is probably a good one.

I move that Voice of Labor be in charge. Who's with me?

ED: several hours later I see I stand unopposed. I nominate voice of labor.

ED2: I want to apologize, I am really baked. I don't care if I give away prizes, I don't care who is in charge, I am imposing myself on you, I am just for some odd reason attaching the idea of giving away old stuff to this thread for some reason. It needn't be a contest or anything like that, it was all something I imagined probably out of some childish impulse.

Well look, I didn't mean to step on anybody's toes, especially voice of labor, I was a Teamster once myself. But if I don't hear from anybody, Imma behave like this is once again a contest and offer up a prize or two. And if you don't want the mic, I'll offer a couple of alternatives like an old Wendy Carlos album or something else that cost me very little and would be easy enough to ship but that might have at least novelty value to an electronic musician if nobody else. No big deal, just want to encourage people a little bit maybe. I ain't gonna even make it to Hollywood at this rate but I can at least encourage other people.

Frankly the best and most immediate use for a mic like that would be with a vocoder, like my Mininova or something.

Here's a couple more mask mic pics, just for amusement. A Korea-era military model, I think used by field radio operators and rewired by YT:

And here is another old one, with a good view of the mic element.

ED: And of course this isn't so different from a harmonica mic and I bet you could use it as one of those to good effect (in case you'd like to complement your beeps and boops with a little tip of the fedora in the direction of Mr. Bob Dylan.) The mic element is similar.

Putting the central scrutinizer in a rock opera was downright Brechtian. You, too, can now have this signal honor in your albums.

And you may receive some RCA cables out of the deal if I can ever get my poo poo together. The offer of the mask mic still stands, and I am still making progress toward getting my soldering station assembled. Soldering station: Assemble:

Music-related activities for the day:

1) Find some other cassettes to disassemble and make loops out of because this King James Version bible is too good to overwrite, and besides sacrilegious so

2) Record these fricking mockingbirds that have made a nest in my chimney and show you all what talent really means

(Stand by)

ED: I've gone through the recordings of the mockingbirds and I'll have to try again tomorrow or something. I think I spooked them when I placed the recorder.

How about a contest or something where we all work from the same sample source and take it from there. A couple movies I might suggest, Phase IV or Silent Running. Whatever, I dunno.

Also, I really am looking for some good solid Trance-ish songs at about 140bpm to work out to, so you could call it Petit Choux's New Workout.

Also, I'd like to request sometime down the road we do porn soundtracks. We could even do this for Valentine's Day. Not porn, mind you. I always loved some of the real sensuous guitar jams I heard on some dirty movies back in the 80-90s. Or alternately this would give me an excuse to make booty or dirty south beats. But I mean real psychedelic, sensuous stuff all around is what I'm nostalgic for, and it might be really fun to do it with synths. The kind of music one of my old hippie buddies once said was good music for balling, especially if you had a good stereo.

y'all can and will do what you want but I would advise against making things into a contest for a number of reasons.

it reinforces the bourgeois mindset of lauding the status quo. whatever is the most inoffensive pop track in 4/4 time will sweep, always. because it's what people are used to. it's catchy because you don't have to think about it or listen to it too closely.

it reinforces the bourgeois mindset of gatekeeping and division of labor. the act of putting tracks up for a vote is saying that there are a set of communal standards, art is fitting into those standards and artists are people who are best able to fit into those standards. the material correspondence is that if you've been doing this awhile and you have dumped some money into gear, your tracks are probably going to reflect that. you know tricks for polish and you have the gear needed to pull off those tricks. beginners, broke motherfuckers and outsiders (those who don't know or don't care about conventions) are going to fair worse in a public vote and those are exactly the people who should be most encouraged to make music.
