I went back through some Kentucky newspapers, wanting to see what the reaction was in 1996 when the Wildcats hired Hal Mumme (and Leach) out of Division II.

The 4 final candidates that year were:
- Mumme
- David Cutcliffe (QBs coach at Tennessee)
- Larry Kirksey (49ers WRs coach)
- Mike Gottfried (who was working at ESPN and hadn't coached football since being fired from Pitt in 1989)

Kentucky's governor was pushing for Howard Schnellenberger.

Writers at the major papers wanted Mumme, for a few major reasons: a) Kentucky isn't going to win in the SEC by running a traditional program, b) Mumme will be cheaper than any of the above and c) We've got to do something to keep Tim Couch in state.

The articles drooled over Chris Hatcher's passing numbers, but they were especially impressed by current Valdosta State QB Lance Funderburk, who had been predicted to be an NFL draft pick. Funderburk wasn't and kicked around Canada and Arena teams or something similar, never panning out anywhere. The papers didn't have footage so they were calling anyone they could think of with a connection to get any kind of scouting report.

There were rumors that Baylor and Boston College were also looking at Mumme.

Paul Finebaum called Hatcher this week https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/the-paul-finebaum-show-85958/episodes/hour-3-chris-hatcher-157966131 (Hatcher's at almost the end of the hour and speaks for about 10-15 minutes). Hatcher's been jokingly saying that he had a lot to do with the Air Raid's development, claiming he was too dumb to get as complicated as the coaches wanted to get.

Where the papers wanted any kind of scouting report 25 years ago, now we can see it as it was. Valdosta State has digitized some of its films in the vault, including a fair amount of football games. An Air Raid in refinement. This first game film shows Funderburk.
