I guess my company/director had the uh, courtesy? of telling the laid off people quietly then had a meeting where they told us "if you're hearing this, you're still working here."

I joined expecting layoffs, didn't quite think it would be first year but hey, now to see how many rounds I survive I guess

This is what happened with me today. Surprise team meeting with people 3 or 4 spots up the org chart from my boss so my first thought was "ah gently caress it's a mass layoff for everyone on the call" but it was just to tell us that some people in the group had already been laid off and that was all for our team (this quarter anyway).

My place isn't really a "tech company" per se (at least, not any more, after being acquired by a bigger company in a different industry), but we've been having regular layoffs and hiring freezes for years, and there's nobody left to cut. They're begrudgingly starting to hire this year since they're at pretty high risk of losing business because of being understaffed.

This is pretty much where I'm at with a telecom that's basically on impulse power after having gone through bankruptcy. Every quarter brings at least a few dozen layoffs in one department or another.

Weird how women on/about to go on maternity leave get laid off so much.

This also happened this week with a guy on my team who was out on medical leave for surgery when we had our latest bloodletting 2 weeks ago. HR was basically like "cool, you're back from surgery? you're fired."
