There's a reason most allied players are very conservative with their carrier fleets until they get at least 5 US CVs together - or even until Hellcats. This way is much more interesting for the observer, though. I mean, to an extent I am hamming it up for the LP, but the sprint through the Marshalls on the way to defend Rabaul is a strategy that has worked very well for me on at least two games, and this is the only time it's actively backfired on me. steinrokkan posted:How was the damage at Palembang in the end? Yes you get that one off shock attack that they are forced to make with penalties, but then they are across the river and you're fighting in an open hex that ultimately isn't strategically important anyway. If I can get Rangoon developed to a level I am comfortable with before he attacks, sure we'll go and build some ofrts at Pegu and set up a speedbump, but that's all it will be. tatankatonk posted:I mean, early Allied hyperaggression is the riskier strategy for a reason Hey, no risk no reward. In theory I believe the Japanese player can prioritize airframes and keep up a good rate, but only at a cost of reduced production of others later. At the request of Greggimus the standard system is being used. We are using 60xp replacement pilots though, and also keep in mind the production levels you saw when I played Japan where something like a quarter to a fifth of what I could have produced had I chosen to. So sure, it's nice to bleed him, and yes it'll take a month or two for production to ramp up, but irreplaceable? Hardly. habeasdorkus posted:Waiting for Saratoga to run into a cruiser task force and decide to turn back to the safety of Rabaul. At this stage that's a huge if though. wukkar posted:There is a space between "Clark" and "Field". I’m a sucker for a good WITP thread and this is a good one. I like this level of detail a lot, I think it reads well and if it doesn’t take as much effort as the style in the last thread then I like it even more. I’ve probably read a dozen WITP AARs between here and the matrix forums and out of those maybe half went to 45 and of that half none of them finished with the same two people that started it so the less chance of burnout the better. One ask would be to remember to zoom out once a month or three or so and kind of give the theater wide view of the major operational areas, stuff like where are you pooling supply and how much and maybe how or when you intend to move it forward as well as force build ups in rear areas. There’s a definite flow to the day to day action synopses that provide a lot of information but sometimes it can be hard to tell the bigger picture and WITP is definitely a game that hinges on logistics.

Miss, but really, who cares. With the exception of the Tonan Marus, anything with a number in its name is pretty forgettable. KVIII is presented with a much juicer target, but fails. 13 planes flown and three hits on the refineries. Not bad for the worst weather. He really likes bombarding Sabang. Probably because it’s working so well for him He’s landing at Langsa now? Interesting. A second day of unloading at Tarakan. We’re taking so much damage because we are in strategic move mode. These guys get hit so hard because dive bombers, and also because they’re already broken. I think he probably could sustain more Liz than this, but it seems this is what he has decided is the required amount to suppress fortification efforts at Bataan. He’s not wrong We have a decent amount of AA here though. At Georgetown we have a good many Bofors we can’t evacuate, so not a great spot for Anns. Our other major attack for the day, also hitting severe storms Presumably going to start bombing here soon. We’re relatively ready, although some AA would be nice. Not bombing anything useful, so fine by me. We should probably try shooting back here. Normally I don’t because it just burns supplies faster and we win the counter barrages anyway, but if it lets us do some damage then that’s better than just sitting here. He’s going to have to come at us with considerably more than that. They fail the assault at Tarakan! He finally gets around to taking Victoria Point. RIP that one Lewis MG team who refused to get on a plane for some reason. A possibility of a counter attack in Sumatra? We really got screwed by the weather there, we should have got much more than that. A shame Louisville gave up, she really wasn’t a hopeless case. SigInt posted:27th JAAF AF Bn is located at Singora(51,72). A highly plausible place for carriers, although we really ought to be able to see them if they are here. The latest movements. Looks like he’s now trying for the Solomons maybe? Not very surprising if so, but we have a horrible gap in our search here and no bases from which to plug it. What he’s going to do here all depends on how intimidated he was by the bombardment reveal of AV. If he’ll just give us another day to unpack properly then we can hold, and in a week when the reinforcements arrive, kick him back off. Of course, in that time he could well bring a whole lot more to the party By definition the fastest units to pack were the ones that had already made it to Langsa, but most of the rest will hit the rails today, arriving for tomorrow and then needing two days to unpack before we can counter attack. Something has been flying over Ramree Island. If it’s the carriers we’re hosed, but if it’s Betties Ramree Island is out of escort range of the Zero from Bangkok, so we’ll throw up CAP and hope for the best. The damage at Palembang, A whooping 45 less fuel produced per day, but perhaps more significantly, 5k supplies to repair. Better weather tonight let’s hope. Yorktown arrives, and is immediately given some extra marine fighters to ferry west. Even taking a somewhat wonky course, I’m not at all happy with Yorktown being accompanied by only one destroyer, so we shall have these four meet her half way. We will continue our policy of trying to force him to base more fighters at places that aren’t Singapore, and for a wonder all but one of the planes we used to attack Manado are currently flyable. Annoyingly you can’t fly strategic attacks at extended range so the 139s can’t join in, but we’ll be able to use them to attack Tarakan once it falls. He might well do something like having the carriers beat up Rabaul while an invasion of the Solomons goes ahead under cover of the CVEs. Saratoga will stay well back but vaguely in the theatre in case of such an eventuality. Which means she will need the services of an oiler, which we do now have ready and loaded

Bonk KXVIII smacks one of the empties going back from Sabang. Despite the better weather, only two hits at Palembang tonight. While KXIII misses a destroyer. Here it comes at Rabaul. Looks like we’re facing the 4th division (no surprise there) backed up by an extra regiment. That’s a serious commitment, but I think we’re still in with a chance. Sorong too. Tarakan the coast guns get a couple hits in, but no fires are started. Or at Langsa either. Sweeps means we have no chance of contesting the air here. Anns continue to harass the last of the Batangas defenders. Storms over Clark Field, and they achieve little. Not much better for the LIz next door. Sweeping Kendrai. I’m surprised it took him this long to react, tbh. Oof. We’re going to have a hard time getting any of the 30ish fighters we have left here out. Ow. Well that would be the KB coming to say hello then, exactly on schedule RIP these two, withdrawn one day too late. No mines for us at Rabaul then Usual getting our rear end kicked at Clark Field. Digos is taken. He continues the push in Southern Sumatra. Yeah, we’ve got this. Welcome to hell 4th division, population: you. They fail again at Tarakan. Well. Now we’re really hitting the meat of it. At least we got two Zeroes on OPs. And somehow a Claude? RIP those minelayers and sweepers, but oh well. The carriers are back past our submarines. OK, so he’s done exactly what I thought he might, with the CVEs at Rabaul and the KB in the Solomons. That’s some consolation, but range 8 to Saratoga is a little uncomfortable, although she is unspotted. Note also horde of S class submarines to the south of Saratoga, although they need to refuel at Townsville before they are ready for patrols. We’re doing well so far at Rabaul, supplies are going to be the issue more than anything else probably. It will be a battle between our supplies and the KB’s fuel allowance. We’re actually doing decent damage at Palembang now, he’s going to have to respond somehow. Although it looks like his choice of response might be to invade Java SigInt posted:53rd Const Co is located at Miri(64,87). Who knows what he might do tomorrow, but I feel it’s prudent Leander lies up for a couple days. A second wave! This is what we have been waiting for. If our cruisers do their usual half assed night skirmish and let them get away I will cry. I suspect he will head straight out into the Coral Sea, or possibly he’ll just stay there and focus on supporting the troops at Rabaul. Either way, Saratoga needs to make herself scarce. Let’s see how annoying we can be with these Seagulls. He doesn’t seem to be very keen on this whole “move fighters out of Singapore” idea, but then it is 96% moonlight tonight. I’ve achieved startling things in the past with night raids like this, so let’s go see what happens. Northern Sumatra simply doesn’t have the infrastructure to support even our pathetic air forces, it’s time to leave with what we can while we can. This is Jasmine’s chance to (hopefully) escape to Colombo. This could be just the kind of opportunity Hermes has been waiting for. We have to be very careful of course, and I suspect these guys are bound for Kendari and thus probably out of our reach, but let’s try. Thanks to this heroic resistance at Tarakan, the last Catalina can be evacuated, leaving only a single Do-24k.

Well we sunk one and probably doomed two more, I guess that’s an OK result I do wish they would actually finish the job. KVIII gets a solid hit on a transport heading for Java, but it doesn’t look like that will be fatal sadly. Two bombardments at Langsa tonight, neither achieving all that much. Wait, how did he get the same ships to bombard twice? He’s landing at Medan too! And he seems to have decided that another wave is needed at Tarakan. And of course continues at Rabaul. A lot of fire from our batteries, but sadly no hits scored. No casualties for him either, which I interpret to mean they’re now just unloading supplies. The Liz continue at Bataan. Clark Field is still being suppressed. Lol, dive bombers v bofors. Sweeping Kendari today. No Liz hit today, but we bag a Sally. He starts work on suppressing Port Blair. As long as it isn’t Rangoon I’m not going to complain, frankly. Sweeping Rabaul again, but from way out in the Coral Sea. He’s being ballsy. There goes Niagara. Leander must have hidden successfully then. “I love Seagulls” - a phrase suitable only for a madman. Tactical bombing continues at Langsa. Nothing we can do but take it, and it isn’t going to be enough to save him anyway. They hit the airfield too. Oops, I thought we were going to get away with only losing Niagara. Had I paid more attention yesterday I could easily have saved these guys, but oh well. Hardly the end of the world. OK, it turns out shooting back is what we should have been doing at Clark Field all along. We’ll run out of ammo and surrender that much quicker of course, but at least we’ll do some damage on the way. They take Iba to little resistance. As soon as we’re unpacked we’re going to gently caress these guys. He’s brought more to Medan, but probably still not enough. Probably. I’m not comfortable with those tanks. That’s a scary amount of raw AV at Rabaul, but we have terrain, level two forts and significant firepower on our side. Just a slight over reaction here I think. Well, a new year, a new war. Let’s hope it continues like this please! Not bad. Today was of course, far from universally positive. SigInt posted:55th Mountain Gun Regiment is planning for an attack on Tavoy. Unironically one of my favourite ships as Allies, Trusty arrives at Aden today. That face full of hate gives her the ability to really deliver some surprise upsets with luck, and the non emergency RN subs are even better. Leander is safe. RIP Niagara. Well, they’ve moved a lot more than 9 in a day, so he must have sprinted. Excellent. lol, we’ve even built a level of forts again at Tarakan. Ayup, that’s an invasion of Java alright. Presumably pointed at Kalidjati. The contents of Batavia harbour are being evacuated to Merak for tomorrow. I’ve left it too late for them to slip away today, we’ll have to wait for a window of opportunity. Something is moving here, and we desperately need to know what. An invasion of Canton Island is the obvious answer, but it could also be fast raiders. To the northwest there we have two incredibly precious convoys of aeroplanes and troops, neither of which we can afford to even think of losing. The lone survivor will go and hide at Cooktown. Wanaka doesn’t count as a survivor, and is for scuttling. Is he going to raid Townsville next? Port Moresby? Go and be mad about the Rabaul situation? Who knows, but I think the ships at Townsville should not be at Townsville for a day or two. I don’t want to risk the cruisers, but finishing off those transports would be a big deal, and one destroyer probably can since he neglected to bother with escorts. This is very risky, but I’m hungry for Chitose to be dead, if I can’t kill carriers I’ll at least go for the potential carriers I also have a feeling his Betties might be set to airfield bombing tomorrow. The reason I think he’s going to do that is because he swept Kendari today. Therefore there are very few, if any Zeros assigned to escort. If the Betties do come we ought to be able to chew them up quite well. Tomorrow the Seagulls shall visit Zamboanga.

O16 has a good try at Tokitsukaze. I don’t mind misses as long as they put in the effort. Like, for example, this. Bah. Still, there’ll be more opportunities. We manage to get 14 B-17s into the air, a decent result. But this only translates into two hits, one on Ryujo at least. The half loads really don’t help here of course, but still a little disappointing for full moonlight. No hits at Brunei tonight. Or at Palembang. At least here we’ve managed to waste the time of some Oscars. Mutsu launches a relatively ineffectual bombardment at Sabang. They come ashore at Baker Island. A lot of our units are unpacked now at Sabang, so far less vulnerable. These guys are technically also unpacked of course, but far too disorganised to defend themselves. Nells hit quite hard at Clark Field though. Not much action at Bataan today. Yes, eat poo poo and die! Really nothing we can do about this unfortunately. Aha, he’s onto us then. For now our cruisers are at another island, though. Wouldn’t it be terrible if he bombed us within the Bofors’ engagement range? I’d hate it if he did that… Who the gently caress knows what happened to Chitose, but at least the LRCAP plan has (half) worked. It would have worked much better if they’d shot some Betties, of course. On the bright side this does mean they have ammo left for the Anns. Nope, not here either. He’s not supposed to have CAP here! Where the hell did these guys come from? Poor Seagulls The Betties are back in the afternoon, but this time we chew them up nicely. They’re on mop up in Northern Malaya. And Davao. Baker Island of course is undefended. Maybe shooting back isn’t the answer Well that is intensely disappointing if not altogether surprising. Our poorly equipped and trained militias just evaporate under pressure, even if there’s no need. Tarakan! More like Tarakant Can’t lie, a little bit salty about how that turned out. Very good, but how cool would it be if you’d shoot all the Betties before they torpedoed Cornwall? Intel seems to love claiming they keep sinking in collisions. Is it true? I doubt it. SigInt posted:1st Ind.AA Gun Co is located at Niigata(114,57). Cornwall is not that bad, but she’s in a tricky spot. An ancient cruiser arrives for us at Mombasa. The standards in the yards at Pearl start their first upgrades. Not up to British standards yet, but a respectable AA rating for all of them now. The Kendari invasion has just straight up disappeared. I really don’t get it. Now what the hell is going on?? The KB is pulling back, so far so expected, but what are the escort carriers and those ships doing? Maybe they’re all just merging together for protection, or is he going for Port Moresby?! They eluded us this time, but hopefully not again. They didn’t hit Mussau Island today, but presumably they will tomorrow. We can stretch ourselves and throw up a LRCAP there. Unlikely to shoot much down, but there’s nothing else useful for the Warhwaks to do right now. And it might convince him we have the ships at Mussau island, when in fact we don’t. Cornwall should be fine, but she needs to travel alone in order to not cause delays for anyone else if she isn’t fine. Hermes is going to go and lurk just outside torpedo range. It’s just possible that he might, for example, sprint these cruisers down to try and catch us. It’s time to start emptying Soerabaja of stuff that doesn’t need to be here. I’m still hoping I can ultimately evacuate most of the Malayan army, so all theses small Dutch and Philippine transports are going to wait at the Cocos Islands, in case they can move troops off the west coast of Sumatra. Some of the faster stuff leaves from western Java too.

I just want it to be registered that this is an obscenely early time to be invading Java Also an amphibious operation at Taiping for some reason?? No hits at Miri tonight. At Singapore we get one, very unexciting, hit. Tuna manages a hit, but only on a DMS. The two destroyers we tried to lunge at Chitose with who were then left without fuel are picked off. Ralph Talbot does some picking off of her own. Soryu dodges another 6 torpedoes Wasting your luck on a DMS is bad enough. A thoroughly doomed DMS when there’s so much else available I-173 gets very cheeky at Pago Pago. Same old at Clark Field. Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll hit Macarthur. Nothing new at Bataan either. Sweeps come in for Batavia, launched from the carriers. I might be getting my rear end absolutely kicked on a strategic level, but on a tactical level I can still set a drat fine CAP trap, if I do say so myself. The CVEs are still hitting next door. Every plane we can damage or destroy is one step closer to - shoving a loving nuke up Hirohito’s rear end. Ahem. Lowkey victory for us here at Georgetown where he’s subjecting our ~50AV to prolonged low level bombing before moving his 500+ AV to attack. No idea why, he must at this point realise most of our stuff is in Sumatra not here. Sweeps of Port Blair. The army comes in slightly higher than the navy at Georgetown, but still well within reach of Bofors. Four Wirraways against the Kido Butai is in theory heroic but in practice just sad. End of the line for these guys. A stark difference in the odds compared to yesterday. And Tarakan finally falls. Thanks to the heroic efforts of the defenders, only a single Dornier remains to be captured. Well, it could have been a lot worse. I could really do with some of these torpedoes hitting Soryu, but we just have to keep trying and remember that eventually our luck will turn. Shame about those Wirraways, but still, that's a decent ratio. Still behind here of course, but the important point was Hokutai Maru’s contents, not the ship itself. About 15 army VP up on yesterday, so times six gives us about 90 devices destroyed with her. SigInt posted:12033 men are based at Toyohara (124,46). Three N class arrive at Aden - Nestor, Napier and Nizam. Not quite the Royal Navy’s best maybe, but a large improvement over the obsolete poo poo we’ve got in theater all the same. Look at that ASW rating A battalion of tonks arrives. I set them to plan for retaking Tabiteuea. And the Brits get a full regiment at Aden. These will surely be wanted for either India or Burma, so I don’t bother giving them a planning objective. Outrageous. Industry and oil is supposed to be damaged more according to the intensity and duration of the fighting, but not a single point of damage is done! The 100 damaged oil is an addition for him, it’s damaged at the start and he can repair it as he gets the chance. Weird how he’s having the carriers stand off like this. I suppose they are well within LRCAP range right enough. I have no idea how he knew to turn the Kendari invasion back, we definitely weren’t spotted. This is presumably them now. Still, Cornwall is now safe, we killed a bunch of Betties and bought Kendari a week or so at the cost of Cornwall spending a month or two in drydock. Op at least partial success? Still in with a chance at catching the other two ships. I’d imagine he’ll sweep Emirau Island tomorrow, so let’s try LRCAPing New Hanover Island instead. We’re now unpacked and ready to destroy the beachhead at Sabang. We’ll probably get butchered by CAP he’s thrown up, but let’s try bombing Tarakan. Maybe he’ll forget. We know he’s got at least one division and two extra regiments ashore at Kalidjati. Not a huge amount, but more than I was expecting and more than we can successfully counter attack. Back to plan hole up at Madioen and last as long as possible.
