Let's Play. I stumbled upon the Freelance Astronauts RE4 LP and then found they were on an actual forum. I later found other LPs I liked by Rock Tumbler and Doctor Roosevelt and those were still ongoing so I joined up to post in the threads.

I was aware of the site back in the 90s as just another gamer-oriented comedy site that my online friends liked. I was impressed that the forums got in the New York Times and whatever but never actually wanted to post here until covid hit.

Lurked a long time after seeing the name on some photoshop, and later bought an account to ask someone how they came to have a picture of my girlfriend as an avatar.

But said girlfriend just had a striking resemblance to Starbucks from Battlestar Gallactica. Figured I might as well keep posting.

Someone starting posting pages from a diary they found in some furniture from a thrift store. The diary was of a 14yo girl and over time detailed a story that was hilarious, tragic and so sad. This was from like 2001/2 or something long ago. I wish I could find that post to read it again.

I can't remember exactly, but there are some stand out threads that I remember.
  • "gently caress that butt real good"
  • That "Bathroom stories from your childhood" thread that spawned the Telhix picture
  • The thread to help a goon find "Super Hornio Brothers" on VHS

Saw an article on best websites to kill time on the internet. There was SA frontpage, Fark, Fazed.net and Worth1000 among others iirc.

I had my first office job and needed to kill a lot of time. This was 2003 I think.

Normally I don't make aesthetic criticisms in other peoples' homes, but that rug looks like a beaver exploded. If meat is murder, then that rug is at least a severe beating.
A Canadian friend on a music forum sent me a link to a front page article in 2002 and I was hooked ever since. It took me a couple more years to find the forum and a couple more to finally get a card to register with. I think that I used one of my parents cards, with permission, as I only had a debit card at the time.

I enjoyed the articles but become a big fan of the weekend web and photoshop phridays and even tried to contributing to a few of them. I didn't really have the balls to post much back then as it was a much wilder time and I was an unfunny wanker. Now it's not as wild and but I'm still an unfunny wanker.

I do recall TotalBiscuit mentioning SA a few times when WoW Radio existed, though it didn't really compel me to post here alone. It was probably that along with PWoT going to poo poo after Cracked bought them out that led me here more than anything.

Back in the Obama era I started following the politoons, newspaper comics and USPOL threads off and on (when the paywall and annoying window kid didn't pop up). Eventually, I got sick of the paywall popping up and just bought myself an account. I quit reading USPOL/USCE or whatever it's called now and the politoons thread for my mental health, but I still use the newspaper comics megathread as my online comics page.

I don't think I was aware of SA at all during its heyday in 2003ish, which is why I was one of those who thought that 'gently caress' was an actual thing among registered users here.

My freshman roommate circa 2003 would get baked and just sit there for hours reading the forums and periodically erupting in guffaws and just generally loosing his poo poo. I'd always ask what was so funny and he'd sometimes try to explain but usually just gestured at the screen for me to read. That got me lurking and the overall vibe got me to reg a few years later.

To be clear I was already an extremely online turbonerd but only knew of sa due to the front page articles so this was the first time someone showef me da forumz

Years later I realized that other nerdy hs friends also had accounts but none of us had talked about it with each other until I realized I was seeing some usernames that corresponded to handles my buddies used at lan parties

Someone bought me an account. I didn't redeem it for like a year though.

He bought accounts for a few of our friends, and I'm the only one still posting. Probably because they went on to build great careers and I dropped out of University and went through a long depression where I did gently caress all but use the forums. I think I just keep posting out of habit, really.

Pretty sure that I found SA through a link on 9/11 or the day after, and was riveted by NYC people's accounts of how they barely escaped by going the way other people didn't go.

Then found some other topics where it was a technical thing, like geology or chemistry or forestry or big machines of some sort and people were posting who were specialists in that. Then found some stories (similar to what @isaboo recently posted) that were hilarious/serious as a heart attack/very creative and unexpected and joined after a few years of lurking.

Still a very sporadic poster, and "sporadic" is being generous. Don't have that much to say, generally.

I read the front page for years but had no interest in posting- there seemed to be a lot of rules and beyond the edgy Phriday submissions I got the impression it was mostly a community of normies I had no actual interest in interacting with. Anyways as I exhausted the content produced by the site I started spending more time looking at the threads that showed up in the "popular threads" sidebar. I didn't mind the word filter once my brain starting making the adjustment but some of the threads I followed would go in and out of paywall and I was impatient enough to pony up the :10bux:

I don't recall the first thread where I felt I wanted to be part of the conversation and contribute. Someone elsewhere has made the point that successive mass toxxes have changed the posting ecosystem of the site over time and I think that makes sense given the timing of when actually joining became more appealing to me.

My local punk/hardcore/indie music scene had an online flyer/show posting page with forums attached that I posted on from 2000 - 2008. It was hosted and frequented by some goons and was heavily modeled after SA, complete with word changes (our version of "gently caress" was "who stole my loving vase?"), tons of gimmick accounts, and a similar sense of humor with fewer rules. p much SA but with GG Allin instead of Lowtax. necrophilia porn & spam are the only thing I can remember being actively wiped from the forums by an admin.

The show postings started to fizzle out with Myspace and Facebook ultimately killed the website. The forums followed pretty quickly after. I ended up coming here to revitalize my posting life as an Angry Potato Punk Page refugee.
