I got hit suddenly with some musical inspiration and have spent the last couple hours dinging around with this. I haven't sat down and actually put a whole song down in a quite a long time and it felt real good to just let it flow again. https://advilsmith.bandcamp.com/track/pomb

I watched some production tutorials on YouTube for some interesting sounding stuff, and may have inadvertently found a work around for my song tempo issue. I'm going to give it a try next time I'm at home. |

Well it turns out I never saved the drum track I had wanted to use, probably because I got frustrated with the tempo problem. And now to add to the frustration, it turns out there is a permanent solution to get the master track tempo to match an incoming signal, and that is called "buy Live 11", which now does this built in. Come onnnn. And the cool envelope follower stuff and a few other things I wanted to try out require Max for Live, which comes with Live Suite, so that's even more money. I have a very love-hate relationship with this program, and yet it remains the only DAW I've ever really got on with. |

I have a very love-hate relationship with this program, and yet it remains the only DAW I've ever really got on with. Watched some youtubes about free alternatives and started using cakewalk. But all that piano roll and or tracker stuff feels too much like spreadsheets and learning yet another program, rather than learning to make music or play an instrument. Vcv rack felt much more like a synth right from the get go, and learning the software was very very similar to learning about modular synths. It was a way more direct path to experimentation and improvising. Plus VCV allows you to do wild poo poo like playing Contra with a drum sequencer as the controller. https://youtu.be/e5eN0GD4g80?si=GzlrPvFb_an5SoYu B33rChiller fucked around with this message at 21:15 on Oct 2, 2023

B33rChiller posted:Live 10 lite came with my first midi keyboard, and I immediately banged into the 4 midi track limit when I tried opening a midi file. Well I'm not about to invest the time into learning software that won't let me do the simplest thing without big bux. You still need a DAW to record into though with that, right? I don't really use Ableton Live (I have 10 standard) for much more than a recording and effects program. I use the drum rack and samples library because I don't have a hardware thing for that. I use Arturia Keylab plugin and my Virus for synth sounds. But because my whole setup is a hodgepodge that never does what I want it to because I didn't have the money to spend on stuff that did, I rely on Live to figure it out, only to find Ablwton is like "oh you want to do this? You should have spent more money. Here's a link to the shop". Honestly sometimes I feel like just buying a hardware multi track mixer and just recording everything through that as audio into like Audacity or something, but that just seems like throwing bad money after bad. |

Nah, I use the recorder module in vcv for recording. There's midi and audio I/O modules included too, so you can theoretically use it with hardware too. I say theoretically because from what I hear, there's some timing issues. Latency, and other things I don't fully understand make it less than plug&play hybrid.

I started looking in to VSV rack and I think I can make it work. It accepts midi and audio inputs and provided everything talks nice with my ancient TC electronics audio/midi interface I can feed my Virus into it. Not sure if I can feed it with Keylab VST, but I can still use ableton for stuff. But I like that it does most of the things I want to try, and being free means there's no risk trying it. Latency is a bugbear no matter what you use, because computers, but I've know some things about reducing or dealing with it. |

I took an extra day off to make sure I'm over the 'rona, so I had a whole day to myself to just doot around. I installed VCV Rack2 and holy poo poo thanks for that recommendation, B33rChiller! I learned more about signal routing hand how to make things doot the way I want them to doot today than I have in all my years of dooting! I made an inaugural doot track. The acid bassline is from an Analog Lab preset recorded in Live, and the drone is from my Virus. The beat and all the rest is VCV Rack, recorded as a .wav and dragged into Live. https://on.soundcloud.com/22T4F |

Tried a new patching idear I picked up on the youtubes the other day: High speed clock into a euclidean rhythm generator. Set to whatever odd length, and the steps somewhere between 2/3 and 3/4. Then feed the output of the rhythm generator into a clock divider. basically an unsteady clock running the divider. Get you some drunken time signatures. https://voca.ro/13BPhoUXgnsG

Is that like the left and right channel being something like 175degrees out of phase, then summed? Destructive interference kind of thing? Latest jam is sweet, and juicy. btw. Much more ample than the previous!
