High speed clock into a euclidean rhythm generator. Set to whatever odd length, and the steps somewhere between 2/3 and 3/4. Then feed the output of the rhythm generator into a clock divider. basically an unsteady clock running the divider. Get you some drunken time signatures.

Really neat rhythm on the snap/snare around the 1:30 mark. Wonder if you could high pass isolate it then use an envelope follower to play another instrument with that rhythm. I'm saying that as a reminder to try it myself as much as anything, but have a go!

B33rChiller

Ha! Yeah, extraction is the only way I could recreate that. Nearly everything I make has some sort of generative element to it, either probability gates cutting triggers, bpm swung by chaotic lfo, s&h modulating the pattern on a rhythm generator, all kinds of things that make it functionally impossible to play the same way again.

Attempts to make a 303 acid tone ended up getting derailed into this. Very satisfied with the bass sound in this. It's mostly droning, but has stereo flavour. Messing around with using a folded wave to modulate the panning at audio rate.

my brain died and forgot how to use VCV rack mostly, but it did make me learn one thing... how to use the mod matrix on my Virus! I understand routing LFOs to envelopes and things like that now, and now I can do even more wild stuff on that thing!

I really need to figure out my cobbled together sounds and signals from different things go into computer somehow and then the computer plays back the sound, maybe using the same device? Or not?
I feel like I need to reconfigure my whole setup just to use a different input device. I feel like I'm missing some kind of fundemental multi-input hardware interface thing.
.

B33rChiller

Taking wild guesses here, but there's a bunch of different ways to do it. You could mix everything outside your computer, and send it all in as a single stereo signal, you could have an interface with an input for every instrument / microphone, and mix in your computer. You could get fancy, and have a mixer that works as a multichannel interface / recorder, and do all of that at once. You could record every sound / part / instrument separately on a field recorder, and put the SD card into your computer to assemble music.
There's lots of options. Some cheap, some free with a webcam, some low cost(different from cheap), and there's probably no top on the cost either. Probably a lot of costly options if you're looking to send more than stereo into your computer simultaneously.
I have a small mixer that sends the final mix in, and plays the stereo out from the computer in the mix that goes to the monitors and headphones. So if I enter to do anything with it in a daw, I wouldn't be able to apply ffx to single instruments, it would be on the entire stereo in.
I think the mixers and interfaces that send each channel separately would need individual analog to digital converters for each channel, bumping the cost every time you build in another port.
I mostly mix in the hardware, and record to an SD card now, apart from vcv rack.
This looks pretty wicked hot

I woke up in the middle of the night, and among the 1000 other things my brain decided 2am was the ideal time to think about, I think I realized my stuff is just hooked up in a dumb kind of way. But now I think about it, I feel like it's hooked up like that for a reason and I'm pretty sure "because you were being thick when you did it" isn't the reason (though not outside the realm of possibility).
Like I can picture how it makes sense logically in my brain, but in practice it's just a cobbled together hodgepodge and it takes me 20 minutes of loving around to get sound from one thing to come out of my speakers or headphones, but then something else won't play nice.
What I would like is a magic box that I can plug my USB midi controllers, 5 pin midi cable, stereo audio patch cables, etc in to, and then plug that in to the computer via USB C or firewire or whatever, and record both audio and midi data into the DAW.
I've thought about mixers, like that zoom mixer, but recording to SD and then plugging the SD in and importing the files seems like a pointless extra step, and won't include the midi stuff.
My audio interface purports to do this, but in practice it kind of wants to be an external sound card and gets weird if you don't exclusively use it for everything. Why don't you use it for everything, you ask? Because it's just.... It's not great. The knobs don't make sense. Which is probably more on me than the equipment.

B33rChiller

Yeah, the all in one with midi is a bit of a unicorn I think. That zoom mixer works as a 12 channel interface as well as onboard recording, so you could just record in the DAW, or use it standalone to mix and record live.
Way above my use case anyhow. You might want to look at different interfaces that make more sense to you. I think some of them have 5pin midi too.

Maybe what I need is just a powered USB hub and a newer interface that can do everything over USB instead.
I have a Virus Ti, so it can do the whole USB midi thing on its own, but the problem is when you plug it in to the computer it goes "oh you must want to use the Access Virus VST!". No bitch I bought you for the knobs, if I wanted to use a plug-in I'd have got a plug-in! So I use the regular dumb midi to record midi notes with it. Or just forget midi altogether on it and treat it like a regular audio input and not try to get too clever, because I am not when it comes to this stuff.

I should have guessed Arturia makes the thing I want, given their whole deal is interfacing, and it isn't even that expensive.
https://www.arturia.com/products/audio/minifuse/minifuse4
This is what I want my ancient TC electronics interface to be. Technically unit can do most of that, on paper, but I dunno. It came out 20 years ago, I've had it for 15, and based on nothing I just feel like the drivers for it just aren't up to the task. The hardware is solid, I'll still keep it in a drawer somewhere if I upgrade.

B33rChiller

just hit record as I was messing around setting up a voice. I mapped a knob on a midi controller to range across 3V, and put that into a quantizer, then through a slew limiter for long glide, but make sure it lands on something chromatic. The 16th note modulation is 2 oscillators modulating each other, the primary voice being FM'd, and in turn, providing audio rate pwm to the modulating oscillator. Both of these are going through vcas for variable indexing.
https://voca.ro/14MRMJbWP2H9

gate-> envelope gen -> opens VCA to allow random voltage to open another vca, allowing audio to FM input or PWM input.

Then I took the output of that and did a bunch of funny stuff with it. octavers, filters, comb filters, mixer with feedback, a bunch of ring mod and rectification.

It was initially an attempt at putting together a noise machine in vcv rack, LOL

I'm liking how the bass voice changes over time. There's like 3 other, higher register voices that I still want to tweak (one is just raw square waves), but I like how this patch is coming together.
https://voca.ro/1lBo4VxfqKX7
The noise swell is actually a couple rhythms with gate signals hitting low pass gates (fed with a variety of noises) at 24X the master clock.
Befaco Noise Plethora is a super varied noise generator. Almost tempted to get the hardware version. Actually, that's true of all the Befaco stuff in VCV Rack. Freaking DivKid got me with 0chd. May Émilie Gillet live a long and happy life. Grids is in there with 0chd in the "Can't patch without it now" category.

Something different for today.
I've been watching zoom court on youtube, and a fella decided that he couldn't pay his fines, and just said to the judge that he has more time than money, so he decided to just go to jail.
The judge was not having it, and said some powerful stuff in his decision.
I sampled it, and cut out the guy's name and interruptions, and played it through some delays and reverb and chorus, with a slow lfo slightly modulating the sample playback speed.

Those are good idears, but I don't have a sampler. I was messing with my piano ( the only truly polyphonic instrument I have.)(ok, fine, I have a bass guitar. That's not the same)

I could mix this signal with some donk doots, if I bust out the modular gear, and mix it in the box.
That's another experiment for the to do list.

A friend of mine has been getting into loop tape stuff and he sent me a 4 minute track that included him banging on a synth as well as.... uh, audio from old french cassette tapes, I think? So I chopped it up in morphagene, added some suitably dooty ambient verby bells, then took the image he had provided me along with the track and jammed through the LZX machine tied to the audio to some extent in various ways

the visual end result is a bit more stochiastic than I am really stabbing for with ambient stuff but mother of god is this poo poo twitchy to modulate, especially when you didn't have $1000 for LZX oscillators and are making do with a $200 mainbow oscillator block for the moment....

edit: actually the image was edited into a 24 frame animation in pixlr first so all of this stuff is a weird analog -> digital -> analog -> digital -> analog + digital pipeline :350:

someone told me video oscillators make cool sounds especially if you filter them with a LPG, so here's 3 channels of video going through a Boing! -- the Boing! is being pinged by an envelope that's being calculated off the same audio by befaco i4, and then to further make this dumb and complex the output audio is going back into the video synthesis chain

In a new move for me, I played the same patch a second time, just tweaking things.
Usually I'll build a patch, play around a bit to see what it sounds like, and start from scratch again next time.
The novelty and experimentation is just so fun and rewarding, that I don't really care to build a listenable track out of it, I just want to endlessly play in the zone of "what happens if....?"
