I bought Luck be a Landlord when it was in early access and played a ton of it. It was released last month and I've been playing a ton more of it. It's a weird combination of deck-building and a rogue-like built into a slot machine. The aim is to collect a symbol with each spin that may possibly react with others to raise cash to pay the rent. The ultimate goal is to raise enough money to eventually kill your landlord and move up to a harder challenge. It's easy to start even with a lot of symbols to learn and to figure out what works well with other symbols. There are many strategies that you can employ, each round that you play only takes between 5-10 minutes unless you lose or win and go into endless mode. Plus there are 186 achievements and one of them is for petting a dog.

Citrouille: Sweet Witches: If you've spent any time with old arcade games, you've played something a lot like this. Ocean's Heart: It's not not a zelda game. Raindancer: 2D soulslike boss rush. TWWWR: A short 2D action/adventure game. The 39 Steps: A kinetic novel adaptation of the book that the Hitchcock movie is loosely based on. It works pretty well cause it's a good book.

Radical Rabbit Stew: An arcade game with puzzle aspects currently sitting at 100% positive out of 68 reviews. You should try this. Unlock the Cat: A decent Rush Hour clone. Wirewalk()↳: This is legally distinct from Link's Awakening just like Bloodstained is legally distinct from a Castlevania game.

I just finished Roadwarden and really enjoyed it. It's a really stylish and well-written mix of CYOA, exploration, and survival. You play as the titular Roadwarden--part ranger, part messenger, part mercenary who travels the frontier of a low magic, iron age fantasy realm. You solve local problems, escort travelers, and maintain the, well, roads. That might mean slaying monsters, reclaiming lost trails, going on hunting expeditions, or clearing out infested ruins. Or that might mean getting involved in local politics, dealing with a bandit queen, and deciding what to do about the local necromancer. But your employer, the city of Holavan, did not send you to the northern peninsula out of altruisim. Their merchants' guild wants to move into the area, and their missionaries want to spread the faith of the United Churches and purge the local pagans. You're not just an adventurer; you're a colonizer. The game does not shy away from this implication. Your arrival is only the beginning of major changes for the region, and your choices will shape its future. You cannot please everyone. You cannot save everyone. But you can make a difference for the people you choose to help. Just remember, at the end of the season, you'll have to answer for your actions to the guild and to your own conscience. Gameplaywise, the game is a text-based CYOA with charming pixel illustrations for each location. Characters and locations are set on an overworld map that expands as you explore, with defined travel times between locations. There is a day night cycle, with traveling during the day before having to rest somewhere at night for safety. You have to manage your health, food, appearance/cleanliness, and equipment status. Earn coins for your work and collect items on your adventures, and spend your money on, rations, repairs, new equipment, and information. Survival / the economy is a little tight but not crushing or desperate. The story is nonlinear with you pursuing multiple lines of investigation / exploration at once that all weave together in satisfying ways. It took me around 15 hours to finish, with most playthroughs as far as I can see on steam running around that time, give or take a few hours. It was quality writing all the way through.

Roadwarden good, I completed it twice. I recommend one playthrough with the time limit for the vibe, then one without so you can do all the quests you care to do (yes a number of them have a couple different outcomes).

I've been going through my list in chronological order of when I played, but that doesn't work for 2022. I made a big push to play through a lot of the games that had been sitting in my library untouched for years, and so I found a lot more hidden gems than I would've otherwise (and a bunch of crap too). I'll be doing my list for 2022 in alphabetical order just cause that seems like the easiest way to get smaller posts. 8 Doors: Arum's Afterlife Adventure: Combat-focused metroidvania based on Korean mythology. Alice Sisters: A decent basic platformer with a character switching mechanic. Wait for a sale. Ary and the Secret of Seasons: This is a good but unpolished 3D zeldalike with a neat season-switching mechanic. They're asking $40 for it and that's insane but if you can get it for less than $20 it's a good deal. Bad End Theater: A visual novel where seeing various endings allows you to unlock new ways for things to go hilariously wrong. Bard Harder: Save the day by seducing the evil lich. Bloodroots: This is probably the best berserker-simulator out there. Everything is a weapon and you need to kill everyone.

Carto: Explore the world by rearranging the map. Cats in Time: A cute hidden object game full of what can charitably be described as puzzles. Chefy-Chef: Basic but decent platformer. Die for Valhalla!: A side scrolling beat 'em up with a twist. Your character is a Valkyrie who controls dead vikings to fight. This one would be better if they'd developed the mechanic more but it's still worth a look. Dungeons of Dreadrock: Turn-based dungeon crawling never felt so good.

Its a truly great game made by a tiny team over the course of +10 years (I bought it when it was Starfarer in 2012) and it has made slow but considerable progress. Mods have only made it better. Do you feel like trading in a dynamic universe, crashing markets by force to create commodity shortages? Or maybe your exploring the fringes of space, luring foolish bounty hunters to their doom? You can create your empire, become a drug baron and then bend everyone to your will be force or alliance. I haven't even talked about combat, which is top notch. I'm just not eloquent enough to properly gush over this game. If you enjoy games like Rimworld, DF, Space Traders: Frontiers, Privateer, or X3 you should at least have a look. We've got a thread here

How kosher is it that the guy just posted a cd key and told everyone to effectively pirate it? I'm imagining "not kosher at all". Apart from that, I'm not really sure why every space combat game automatically ends up as a space trading game. They're like... two completely different things, man. I've always been aware of Starsector (and have a knee-jerk reaction to purchase any linux-native game), but seeing stuff like the emphasis on grinding up an empire and the last patch being over two years ago doesn't really inspire much confidence.

https://fractalsoftworks.com/blog/, most recent thing is 2021. Their 'archives' links on the right stop at October 2022, as does their last blog post and the copyright on the website. If you've got an inside scoop that's not on their front page, by all means please do share. ------ Thanks for the RoadWarden tip, was great fun! Basically played out exactly as I had wished other narrative games would have done (e.g. Citizen Sleeper, avoid) ------ Seems like nobody has mentioned Teleglitch yet, so I'll throw a post in about it. https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=iEnS4wPRETw An old game from 2012, with a dedicated lo-fi aesthetic that puts out a few people. It's a procgen scifi horror shooter, top-down, which starts you out with nothing but a knife while you rummage around cupboards looking for explosives and nails to tape together to make nailbombs. After knifing a few zombies, rigging up a nailgun from a few tin cans, and dying a whole lot in the randomly-generated stations, the tone suddenly and dramatics shifts when the zombies get machine guns, and it becomes a tense game of tag where you listen for footsteps and enter rooms spraying at any movement in terror. Has inventories, item crafting (no wait, the good kind before it was overused everywhere, I promise!), and very strict lines of sight as seen in the screenshots. Cheap as chips, kinda falls into a cult-classic status as its purity of vision hasn't really enabled many imitators since. Serephina fucked around with this message at 10:42 on Mar 3, 2023 |

Epiphany City: Neat little puzzle-adventure game. You can tell it's a new dev team but this definitely shows potential. Fairune Collection: A collection of extremely retro zeldalikes. The first one is great, the second one is a little more than I wanted, and the demo is something you can clear in under ten minutes. Faye/Sleepwalker: Janky in both gameplay and translation, but there's something basically good here. Flynn: Son of Crimson: It's a super-generic SNES-style action platformer, but sometimes that's exactly what you want. For Evelyn: Point and click gameplay with a simple skill tree in an RPGMaker game.

Has anyone mentioned the Sokpop games? They're a small collective of four Dutch game designers who make a game every two weeks (or month now, not sure) and they're surprisingly well made and fun, and cheap too. Just picked up Pocket Watch which is an amazingly cute Groundhog Day-like time-loop adventure where you are a duck trying to save an island from a volcano, and helionaut which is a surprisingly fun lo-fi No Man's Sky-like I guess. And Simmiland which is a fun godsim card game. Sterf fucked around with this message at 11:59 on Mar 12, 2023 |

Grayland: Overall not a bad way to kill an hour, but the ending has to be seen to be believed. HipWitch: A short adventure/puzzle game. Jivana: I thought this was a student project but apparently not. It shows potential and if it were the demo for a full game I'd definitely buy it. King of the Cul-De-Sac: "An Interactive Comic with PUNCHING in it." Kraino Origins: A very retro action platformer. Krystopia: A Puzzle Journey: A very simple escape-room type puzzle game. Avoid the sequel.

It's amazing how much they managed to pack into the mechanics.

An open world JRPG with very robust mechanics that will live rent-free in your brain forever for better or worse. Leif Ian Anderson is an auteur of the highest order and everything that entails, good and bad, is in this game. a game so hidden nobody but me and the person who recommended it to me on these very forums has played it apparently. That is a shame. This game deserves the chance to piss off your neurons. Ok, I'm very interested in insane auteur games, played this yesterday for 2 hours and there's a lot of cool stuff there. Looking at the steam forums briefly, seems like there is an incredible amount of content. But I need to know one thing - does the writing get better? So far the dialogue is very cringy and some of the poetry I found on random bookshelves is absolutely terrible. It's like "my first RPGmaker game"-tier made by a teenager. Don't need spoilers, just tell me if there's something later that recontextualizes this, or if this is just going to be it all the time.

Legend of the Skyfish: A series of bite-sized easy zeldalike levels that won't amaze you but might be a good way to pass the time. Lenna's Inception: One of the better recent zeldalikes. It's pretty strong overall but the final dungeon is one of the most clever things I've seen in any of these games. Little Noah: Scion of Paradise: A cute game that's more than a little reminiscent of Dead Cells and Ender Lilies. Lost Words: Beyond the Page: A platformer with light word-based puzzles. Written by Rhianna Pratchett.

GrandpaPants posted:Brutal Orchestra: Still in EA, but this is a really solid roguelike. Combat takes place in JRPG-ish fashion, with each character being pretty varied in how they play, even if they're in the same "role". The ink system provides some pretty interesting tactical and strategic decisions, as the only character who will have a regular source of ink (which enables you to use your attacks) is the MC, but if you generate too much ink, you take damage. It has definitely made me feel like both a genius and a fool for not taking it into further consideration. If you like the kind of "gross" art aesthetic that it has going (LISA is what popped in my mind), then you'll definitely like the art and style in here. It started out a little frustrating because it's unique/weird with the ink system but much like star renegades once it clicked I love it. It oozes interesting art, music, style and decent dialogue/combat concepts. It grabbed me hard last night and time flew, I need to put it on my steam deck for when work gets slow.
