But really if they wanted to portray the real life of an MI6 employee, Bond would just sit in an embassy all day, payoff locals for information, and then write reports about it.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy gets a lot of well deserved praise, but I thought A Most Wanted Man was also really good while not hearing a lot about it. Our Kind of Traitor was also decent but not as good as the other two.

The second season of Slow Horses just finished up and I liked it a lot. Turns out intelligence agents that are old, schlubby fat dudes are way more interesting to watch while also being more realistic.

And yeah your typical CIA “agent” is a schlubby middle-aged divorced ex-military dude doing pretty mundane HUMINT case management.

I tend to like the more realistic spy stuff. The Spy on Netflix is one of my favorite.

Haven't heard of that one, definitely going to check it out if it's along the same lines as those other movies/shows.

Jay talking to Rich after seeing The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly for the first time was good because Jay had a lot of interesting things to say about it with his fresh viewpoint. I have a feeling all these other channels... don't.

First learning about these fake reaction videos through a coked out insomniac Gus Johnson was pretty good though. I like the people who pretend they don't know how to pronounce "Queen".

I found S2 more interesting because it really kept you guessing about what it was about. Not until the end was it clear that it was about getting revenge for "Joes" from Cold War 1.0, and in reality there was no real Cold War 2.0 in play. It was a combination of the revenge plot and the doublecross to steal a poo poo ton of diamonds. I had no idea how it would go whereas S1 I had a pretty good idea and if anything the ending seemed really rushed and a bit forced. It was funny seeing River get duped yet again too. Also rules to see Rade Šerbedžija (aka Boris the Blade) again.

My takeaway from what happened was there's still "Cold War 2" stuff, but the form it's taken is Russian oligarchs doing whatever they can to keep on oligarch-ing. Nevsky was said to have been a potential rival to Putin, and Katinsky was only allowed to defect because he would be called on later by the FSB. The government plot now was just Putin having someone assassinated and taking control of his assets, with the diamond theft being the skimming off the top that's all the rage in Russia.

I can't wait to see the remastered Project A-Ko release. Discotek was originally going to upscale it from a laserdisc master because they thought the original 35mm print was lost, but it turns out it was just filed incorrectly when archived and was found last year.

Oh it's amazing. You can see the brush strokes on the blu ray.

I got recommended some of Kenny Lauderdale's videos and it's cool how people are digging up film masters of old Japanese TV and ripping/restoring them as best as possible. It would be neat if there was a similar community that did the same with western media, but given how litigious rights holders are here that kind of thing would get nipped in the bud pretty fast, even for stuff like commercials or educational shorts.

"The Little Flying Fish Gets Sick" is mentioned in that video as an educational film that was originally screened in schools and was found and scanned. I watched it with my friend's kid since his screen time is limited, but being educational and in Japanese his mom was okay with it, although she was a bit apprehensive because while it's good for his language skills "Japanese stuff for kids can be a bit of a downer, they don't really do happy endings like here".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv2FSPzZAew

I thought it was just gonna be something about radiation poisoning, but it ended up being about the horrors of nuclear war and the kid just fuckin' dies at the end, with his mom crying over his lifeless body. When dad got home he was all "oh man, I remember watching this in elementary school! Good times." Now that it's been found and remastered, it's once again being shown again in schools.

I love this quote from the last RLM thread about Patlabor

Gripweed posted:

The thing about Patlabor is that there's three basic stock stories you get. It's about the Tokyo Police Department Special Vehicles Unit 2nd Division. The 2nd Division being the not as good division that doesn't get much respect. So the three stories told about the 2nd Division are

-some big crime is happening, and the brass have no choice but to call in the 2nd Division, who save the day but in an embarrassing way that causes a lot of collateral damage

-the Chief is away from the 2nd Division, typically apologizing for the damage they caused in the previous type of story, so the guys get into hijinks!

-there is a sickness at the heart of Japan. The crimes of World War 2 have never been addressed, merely papered over and allowed to fester. The elite live lives of luxury while the people struggle without hope. Right wing elements in the government and military are staging a coup and the brief period of democracy that has existed since the war is coming to an end. But they made one mistake. They forgot about the Tokyo Police Department Special Vehicles Unit 2nd Division.

The movies are mostly the third one, but the show has a mix of all three.

I'm gonna have to watch Patlabor 2 again now.

It feels like one's enjoyment of the series is tied to how much you can't handle basic human interactions. As someone who can say hello to people without melting down, it didn't live up to the hype for me. The way it played around with animation styles was interesting, at least.

One of the things I like about RLM is learning about the post-processing and editing side of things, which goes a long way in explaining why movies turn out the way they do and what's involved with making a movie that looks "right". It's cool how they can pick out stuff like camera settings and what data formats the filmmaker used by how poorly implemented things like the color grading are done.

It's why some of us are hoarding those Vinegar Syndrome blu rays, and copies of Linnea Quiqley's Horror Workout.

I don't know how it happened but a couple weeks ago I made YouTube poo poo the bed by endlessly scrolling down to try and get more and more search results. I searched for shootout scenes to find more action movies with sick setpieces like Heat and kept scrolling down to find lesser known movies I hadn't heard of. At first it started looping results in the same order every five-ten videos, but then it got really loving weird with these Indian playlists that would alternate between softcore clips, straight up porno, breastfeeding videos, and toy car unboxings (nws).

I don't know how sites link up these days but clicking on one of those links has completely hosed up my algorithm. Facebook shorts is constantly giving me Indian women breastfeeding videos in my feed and no matter how many times I tell it to stop it keeps giving me more. I guess that's supposed to be my thing now.

I know, ha ha I'm a pervert. It's just bizarre how they demonetize and shut down channels for the tamest stuff, but then feed you the weirdest poo poo completely unprompted. I did a capture of scrolling the search results to show how it switches over, and my feeds were relatively normal until a single click completely hosed up every website I go to that utilizes data mining.

I've been able to free up space while helping folks who needed things like crutches after breaking an ankle, or have someone pick something up from the grocery for me while I was in covid quarantine.
