In Pizza Tower you don't have a health bar outside of boss fights, so technically there's not a downside to taking damage. However, the game will notify you "YOU HAVE HURT PEPPINO X TIMES" whenever you hurt him too much, and a hint pizza early on helpfully tells you "if you hurt Peppino, you go to hell", so I ended up caring more about Peppino's safety than if there was actually a health bar.

The only way to remove a powerup is to visit a pizza priest and have him absolve you of your curse.

Rather than collecting a key to open secret doors, you instead find the janitor on his lunch break and have him follow you around to use his key ring to get you in.

There's a level that guest stars Mort the Chicken. They genuinely contacted the developers of an old, forgotten Playstation platformer and asked for permission to use Mort the Chicken and here he is.

Holy poo poo Pizza Tower is really good. Thought it would just be some goofy fun but it's got a really fluid and compelling movement system and you could really go crazy with the speed run/score attack aspect if you wanted, but it's also just fun to explore and work your way through the levels. Love the escape sequences too

A brilliant thing about the escape sequences is that the time limits are pretty comfortable for first time playthroughs... because on replaying a level you have the option to run a second lap in the remaining time for extra points, and that's what the time limits are actually timed for.

Aces & Adventures is a poker-based Slay the Spire-esque roguelike wh... no, not that one.

Presentation's top notch on this, but if you already fell in love with Poker Quest, I'm not sure if you have room for two games with incredibly similar themes. I think this one embraces the poker side a little bit more relative to the roguelike? As for me, it's entertaining enough that I'll hold onto it... and then inevitably forget about after 1-2 runs like I did for actual Slay the Spire, which I will get back to Any Day Now, For Real This Time. Aces & Adventures is 20% off for release on Steam (though I think it might be 35% off on GameBillet).

It's great. Presentation is, as you say, very good; the story card art in particular is gorgeous. There are a lot of neat, unexpected mechanics. You basically have two separate decks+hands of abilities or playing cards, with playing cards replenishing to a full hand of 5 after every entity's turn, and all cards are kept between rounds and even between encounters, so it's very tempting to hold on to as much as you can. The way defense works is also interesting - you can only defend with the same amount of cards as an attack, so if an enemy throws a single ace at you it doesn't matter if you have a pair of kings - you can only defend with one of them and lose. One sneaky trick against an enemy attacking with a single ace you can't beat is to morph one of their cards into a pair you can beat, since the AI prioritizes pairs and switches to it.

I also feel like I'm obligated to love it because this was one of the first things that happened to me:

Is there some sort of draft-your-own-poker hand thing going on? Cuz if not, getting a royal flush just means is that the game is cheating in your favor to make you feel clever. I had a daft friend who played a lot of games on Facebook, she played the freeware version of a gambling casino thing. Often crowed at how good she was, always being up money easily in blackjack and poker... and I'm like, lady, don't be dumb, you don't make half a million against the house in blackjack.

I’m kicking myself for not recording an actual clip of it, but I think that was a full draw from an empty hand, and it’s not the tutorial. I can believe the game gave me that one so I’m not going too crazy over it but I also didn’t see it happen in the YouTube I watched so who knows

An important aspect to Rain World's difficulty is that the random creature generation/behavior means that a room that seemed to be a complete deathtrap could be a total breeze your next time through. Patience and persistence really win the day. Its difficulty serves to make success all the more rewarding - I'll never forget climbing The Leg.

The painful thing is that there’s actually an altruistic reason for all that nonsense at the core: they wanted to let you play the previous games’ content inside of the newer versions, which is very cool! But they use Steam as the middleman for everything and it’s just a mess.

Looking at the screenshot comparisons, it seems pretty clear cut that Nexon's claims are legitimate. This will probably kill Dark and Darker permanently, which is a shame because it really is a very good game, but there's nothing that can be done about it at the end of the day. Don't steal from other companies.

Police raided their offices and didn't find anything, and most of the assets in Dark and Darker are Unreal marketplace assets that you can recognize in other games. They'll obviously look similar since they're both set in generic dark dungeons. Unless some real genuine proof comes out the claims are bull.

Beloved devs spending years and years on a genre that's fallen out of favor by the release date is a cycle that's happened before but I feel like this time around it's especially bad. Destiny-heads are still playing Destiny for their fix, and people who hate the Destiny model HATE the Destiny model.

I honestly can’t see a backlash happening. The Hollow Knight fandom feels more like the ones for Undertale or Outer Wilds, where it’s more “you’ve already given us our favorite game of all time so y’all can do no wrong”. Like, the Outer Wilds DLC was way more contentious than the base game but it didn’t get overblown hate for it, and even detractors still loved just having the opportunity to return to that world. I’d imagine a similar situation happening if Silksong is mid (but also Silksong will not be mid so it’s a moot point).

  1. Gollum clasps his hands, whispers "my precioussss".
  2. Beetle flies around Gollum, he is surprised.
  3. Beetle lands in front of Gollum, he looks at it with concern and interest before it flies away.
  4. Beetle lands in front of Gollum, he looks at it with interest before it flies away.
  5. Beetle flies around Gollum, he looks at it angrily.
  6. Beetle flies around Gollum, he swipes at it and fails to kill it.

Lies of P is p good. Its combat is actually pretty different from Bloodborne - much more of a focus on blocking, such as a perfect block with slightly generous timing, and a rally heal system that builds up when you block attacks that gets turned into healing by attacking. It ends up feeling great.

There is a lie mechanic. After lying I could "feel my gears twisting". Whether that ultimately leads to the nose extending remains to be seen.

Viewfinder is such a fascinating premise that's a lot of fun to play around with but oh god why did they make someone talking whenever you do anything. The last thing I want in a puzzle game is someone quipping whenever I move a battery, it completely rips you out of the experience every time. It stops partway through the demo, thankfully, but that just makes it weirder it's even there at all.

As a result, the Early Access release was in a pretty rough state. Not sure whether it's improved since or not.

They've been improving it gradually but it was clearly not ready for early access, let alone at the price they're asking for. At this point most of us are just waiting to see how the first big update goes.
