His Wolverine was good, it just wasn't Thor good, so this seems like good news. His Avengers wasn't terrible, it just doesn't compare to Hickman, or Bendis or Ewing, and his Thor is up their with Walt Simonson.

Cross-posted in the Original Art thread:

Yesterday I went to the first-ever Original Art Expo in Orlando, Florida, which is a small convention completely devoted to comic book artists and art dealers. It was nice, because it wasn't crowded with cosplayers, Funko Pops, "nerd crafts," and C-list celebrities, but just a small crowd who loves the art of comics.

I got to meet my all-time favorite artist, Mike Allred, and his lovely wife and colorist Laura. I lugged a bunch of their comics that they patiently signed for free while chatting with me and a few other people in line, and they even let me take a photo with them. This was their first-ever convention appearance in Florida, and I've been waiting to meet them since discovering his work in the mid-'90s. They could not have been cooler or more charming. I just wish I could have afforded some original Allred art, but the cheapest, smallest pieces were "only" in the $400 - $500 range.

Then I got a Daredevil hardcover signed by father-and-son penciller/inker team Paolo and Joe Rivera, got Greg Land to sign my Birds of Prey #1 (from before his porn-tracing era), and visited two other artists I've met at previous cons for a few more signatures: Booster Gold creator Dan Jurgens and Matt Wagner, master of all things pulp and noir.

Wagner was kind enough to sketch some remarques in my Batman/Grendel trade paperback and my custom-bound Sandman Mystery Theatre hardcover books:

I love it when artists do quick doodles along with signatures. Jeff Lemire is quite well known for doing a 10 second doodle every now and again when doing signings.

As for the Allreds I kind of wish they weren't so friendly when doing signings. I remember standing in a line for them for about 45 minutes because the guy two people ahead of me brought pretty much everything they had ever done to get signed and it just went on and on and on.

I'm afraid that was exactly me yesterday, but I was one of the first people in line to get in and the first person in line at their table for that very purpose. They were the whole reason I went. It seemed like the three or four people in line behind me were pretty patient, all things considered, and Mike and Laura chatted with all of us while they had an art rep helping facilitate sales at the same time. There was a lot of multitasking going on. It was the first thing in the morning, as soon as they arrived, and everyone was fresh and in good spirits and happy to be there.

I stood in line for Brian Bendis for two and a half hours at last year's Baltimore Comic Con. I got there an hour before the doors opened and went straight to his table, but then HE was two hours late. But the whole reason I flew out to that con was to meet him and Mark Waid and get them to sign Daredevil books for me, so I did what had to be done.

I read The Last Ronin. Pretty good! The only TMNT comics I'd read before are the ones where everybody becomes a mutant and instead of doing ninja stuff the Turtles just go to DIY punk shows and teach self defense classes, so I didn't get all the references. But it was still a good little miniseries. It was kinda funny, at one point they establish that the new girl is specifically 17, and I was like, "that's weird I wonder why they felt the need to specifically establish her age and nobody else- ohhhhhhhh yeah. That's the first word. She's the new teenage mutant ninja turtle"

I feel like I'm starting to circle around getting into TMNT. I'm holding off so far but I feel like I'm being pulled in.

When did the term “Remarque” start getting popularized in regards to sketches on comic books? I feel like I’ve only started hearing that term in recent years.

It's an extremely common term in the art world. I haven't noticed it being used any more often lately w/r/t comics than in the past.

When I was 17, my father was so stupid, I didn't want to be seen with him in public. When I was 24, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in just 7 years.
I used to read the good/bad comic book art thread very frequently and the discussion in the Marvel thread from a couple days ago about Land made me realize it had been a couple years since I clicked on it and I decided to give it a look and uhh a couple was approaching 11 years ago. I'm so old.

Didn't X-Force get to the point where Liefeld just wasn't even involved in the scripts and just drew pages that had dialogue added later? I vaguely remember a panel where Shatterstar is screaming with his sword drawn but the dialogue was something like "I see, that's a good point"

it didn't "get to the point" it started at that point, it was always art and "story" by Liefeld, script by Fabian Nicieza

by Deadpool's 4th appearance Liefeld wasn't even drawing the book anymore, he just had a vestigial story credit while he was off founding Image

Yeah that was peak "artists without storytelling chops just drawing whatever, then the scripter needing to assemble something out of the mess" era. I feel like a lot of the hot artists of the late 80s and early 90s grew up with stories of the Marvel method being drilled into them and not understanding that it worked because guys like Kirby knew how to structure a story and give it the flow it needed, Lee was an absolutely amazing editor, and the collaborative process was an actual collaboration instead of someone loving off to do their own thing.

Liefeld created some ripoff design from DC's Deathstroke that was used in a couple of pages of early X-Force.

Fabian Nicieza created Deadpool.

The image you sometimes see of him and Bullseye where he says he last saw Bullseye in issue 13 or whatever of the series is the first time he broke the fourth wall. That was actually near the end of Kelly's run I believe. So yes it was Joe Kelly that first did it. Although Fabian Nicieza and weirdly enough Mark Waid were the ones at first to really shape his character at all.

Fabian wrote the first Deadpool mini series. Mark Waid wrote the second one. The second one was a lot more influential on Kelly's ongoing with Deadpool. Introducing the relationship with Siryn and all that. I believe Waid was also the first one to make Deadpool scarred under the mask. Might be misremembering that.

I'm pretty sure the scarring was revealed at the end of the first mini, but Waid was the one who first went into detail about the experiments and stuff.

You may be right. I seem to remember a scene involving maybe Kane where it was seen? I definitely remember the Waid mini the very first time you see him is a reveal of his charred face taking up most of the page. I believe it was also the first book to bring up Killebrew and all that as well which played majorly into the ongoing.

Psylocke is Jim Lee, but I suspect Elektra was an influence. Early Ninja Turtles was massively influenced by Miller's Daredevil.
