I bought the Akira box set last year and it’s just been shelf porn. I need to read it this year. I also want to get back to more regular reading of the marvel reading order. It would be cool to reach the 80s at some point.

Also I bought or was gifted a lot of comics over the past month. I will get some photos because there’s some cool stuff.

And randomly: if you’re in Canada check out Chapters, where for some reason one of the Fantagraphics editions of Snow White by Romano Scarpa is in the children’s section and listed for like 6$. My local store has like 20+ copies. I love me that Disney Masters series.

Larsen is a fantastic cartoonist, very creative and ambitious. His early Savage Dragon run is top tier work, and honestly those first 100 or so issues held up pretty good when I read them five years ago.

Dale Keon absolutely had a “not hulk”, but savage dragon wasn’t hulk.

A couple years ago I didn’t buy a full set of lone wolf and cub, and I’m kicking myself for it.

I also didn’t buy a whole stack of corto maltese, but the older English print versions were very bad so I’m not too fussed about that.

I love my physical comics. I also read on digital, but just looking at the actual books brings me a lot of joy.

I'm curious: is the Lone Wolf and Cub manga as full of stylized hyperviolence as the films, or is it a different vibe?

It feels very similar, at least to the first three movies.

The direct market is a big portion of the comic sale market in NA, so that’s missing a big piece of the pie. In 2020 it was something like 60% of the more traditional book market. Even if that’s gone down, it’s a huge number for Marvel and DC in particular.

It includes trades. Depending on the store, that could be a very big chunk of sales.

Anyone read DP7? I’m going through my comics and putting together stuff for an auction, and I had this on the block. But I noticed it’s a complete series by Gruenwald, so looking for thoughts. I’m going to read at least the first few issues, but always interested in opinions from BSS people.

I love Bone but I’d also recommend Jeff Smith’s RASL. Same great cartoony art but a darker sci fi story.

Oh yeah RASL is definitely not for kids.

In terms of people who feel like Scioli… I mean the obvious one is Jack Kirby, especially his later stuff. His Pacific Comics stuff is batshit.

Welp, off to check those out too! Any specific titles from his Pacific work that you'd recommend?

There’s not that much of it. Captain Victory and Silver Star. Like 20 issues total.

If you haven’t read a lot of Jack, his entire 70s run at DC is also worth reading. I mean, everything he did is. But Scioli takes a lot out of that run not just in his art but also in his storytelling.

StoryGraph would probably work if you’re doing trade paperbacks and other forms of collected works. I use it to log my reading, and I include graphic novels and other collections.

Ditko is probably rolling in his grave over a man (his brother) profiting from the labour of another man (his). He always seemed real clear that Marvel was a work for hire situation, and treated it as such.

It should just revert to public domain and nobody should profit from it.

The clearest sign that Stan Lee was actually good is the years right after he leaves. Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and Thor are still good when Ditko and Kirby leave. They nosedive when Stan leaves and take a while to come back.

I think the best writer in 60s marvel was maybe Steranko.

I found Thomas’ writing to be incredibly tedious. He was at his best when he was bringing back golden age characters, or adapting Conan. He was made for adapting Conan actually.

Thomas was a hell of a lot better than the guys who came next though. The first couple years after Stan exited were rough as guys like Englehart found their footing. For example, I think every writer tried second person narration at some point. Dogshit.

Actually you know what I’m going through my ratings of those issues and I think I liked Conway’s run more than I remember.

I thought Thor stayed great through the early 70s. Kirby leaves after 179, 180 goes right into a couple great Neal Adams issues. Buscema takes a few issues to get into it, but by 187 I was fully back on board. Stan hands off the Conway in 193 but it stays pretty consistent. Part of it is probably just that I liked the big god stuff they were doing, and Buscema was one of my favorite 70s artists. There’s some rockiness when Stan leaves as EIC in late 72 and Perlin comes in for the art assist, but they pull it back and I love all the cosmic god stuff and weird Asgard storylines.

e: around 229 it falls off and that basically brings me to where I’m at in my reading - 237 is my next unread Thor. Reading the synopses it looks like they hosed up and started setting stories back on earth and putting Hercules in the books. Dumb waste of a great character and cast.
