The DeFalco run was not good. But after it you have Heroes Reborn which has good art since it's Jim Lee and a crappy story. Then first couple of issues of the relaunch which might as well not count and then Chris Claremont takes over. So you've got some real treats in store. Like Halloween candy with razor blades in them.

Doesn't Heroes Reborn have some incredibly infamously bad art? Like Captain America and his weird bulgey chest bad art? I seem to remember another artist who's name starts with L being more well known for Heroes Reborn than Lee.

I think Heroes Reborn was also going on when Marvel published the Captain America cover of his with the floating face and disembodied forearm.

Everyone is enjoying the Cap stuff, but Heroes Reborn was four different ongoing rebooted series that wound up lasting a year. They were definitely intended to be the new ongoing status quo when they started but that plan changed. It was Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America, and Avengers and the most readable of those (a very low bar) was FF.
It lasted a year and had Lee and Liefeld working on it? That's what, 3 issues for each book in that time?

I always get so star struck getting my poo poo signed. I have an insane commission collection but always freeze up when asking directly the artist at conventions. Same with getting books signed. I feel like a dweeb with a stack of books no matter how small making small talk with someone I don't know.

I've done some rounds w/cgc, they're mostly fine, it's not as expensive as I thought it would be when I did it but it takes loving forever and I'm never sure if I'm still gonna be living at the same address when they retrun ship. As a poster above said though, unless they saw it or someone they license to witness saw it, it's considered drawing on the cover. Nothing's stopping you from selling it to private collectors tho and if they're willing to accept that the sig is real that's all that matters.

I think CBCS has a service where they authenticate unwitnessed sigs before slabbing tho if you're interested in that.

Artists are more likely not to charge since they usually do healthy business selling prints. Writers are more likely to charge because there's fewer revenue stream options for them at cons usually (what're you gonna do? commission slash fiction from them?). Also decent ones tend to do something like "first 3 books free, after that I'm charging" but some charge off the rip but even then it's like $5 a book.

Then there's "top tier talent" and "delusional psychos" who start at like $20 a signature. Steranko fits into both these categories.

Oh yeah, a lot of people will now charge if you're getting poo poo graded even if they don't charge normally which seems very fair.

I'm curious if this is true, but I've heard most artists prefer to personalize the signature just because it means its less likely to just get resold.
Even though reselling is never on my mind, this seems weird, just because it's not like they'll ever recognize me if we meet again. I can see where it comes from, but I don't know.

I've seen people who waive their fee if it's personalized.

Mostly it comes from a place of frustration of understanding that they won't see any more residuals from aftermarket sales of hot books. Like say you created a character that's being used in a movie that's seeing insane numbers at the box office. You already got screwed by the publisher and the studios and now you're getting screwed by the aftermarket because key issues are selling for massive amounts, even more if you sign them. It's the same situation with people who don't charge for signatures unless they're for graded books. It's the one little way you can hop on a train that's being powered by your creativity but leaving you behind.

I've seen people do the very polite thing of telling the fan they'll happily sign all those books but after everyone else is done so the line keeps moving. That feels like the best compromise for people who will sign anything and everything and people who show up with anything and everything.

This one hits hard. My wife and I are good friends with his friends that help him run his con booths and this one really hurts. We feared things had turned bad when Brian's partner basically stopped posting anything on social for the past week.

It's funny, I saw a news article about this without naming the studio or the people involved in the headline and I was like "oh cool, another profile about DSTLRY" and clicked on it only to find out it was this.

I'm sure there are people that care but when Image was created, people cared because it was hot talent at the top of their game and this...isn't. Don't get me wrong, there's some good names in there but...who's really excited to read new Geoff Johns material? How many people look at a cover and see Tomasi's name and say "oh this is something I've gotta check out."

I just finished the first two Red Room TPBs from Fantagraphics and I liked it a lot. Anyone got any recommendations for black and white hyper detailed horror stuff like that? I did find copies of Wizzywig and Hip Hop Family Tree but they're not even really in the same neighborhood. Rad art thought.

Not black and white but similar theme. Luanna Vecchio's Lovesick is amazing. It's quite graphic both sexually and violent but gently caress if it's not so good.

Hoopla and Kanopy are so loving awesome. Libraries are awesome. Support your local one as much as possible.

They’re doing a kickstarter for Lady Death vs Zombie Tramp. It’s about time those two met up, I’m surprised it hasn’t happened before now.

These exist just to sell variants right? Like no shot these are actually readable at an enjoyment level. All I ever see in these kickstarters is page after page of variants (we put boobies with nippies on the cover!!! L@@K!!!!) and I've never fully understood where the market for this is. Even at a masturbatory level, if you're old enough to back the campaign, you're old enough to find porn on the internet.

Just to be clear, I'm not against horny comics, I love good horny comics. Hell, I recommended an extremely horny comic on this very page.

Vampi has definitely had good talent thrown at her for years with varying results. The lows heavily outweigh the highs but I get it, when it's good, it's very good.

That said, I think there's a huge difference comparing a new Vampi kickstarter with a Lady Death or Zombie Tramp kickstarter.

I also want to be clear that I'm not at all saying they shouldn't keep doing these. They make absolutely massive amounts of money for the creators and unlike other campaigns that never really get fulfilled (*coughComicsGatecoughcough*) so obviously there's a market. I'm just curious why there's a market. The current campaign has ~1900 backers and ~256k committed to it. That's around $130 per backer. I know it's a little skewed because they have extremely expensive tiers but if you exclude those and their backers, that just drops the average to $120. Am I missing something? Is there some real secondary market for the variants that I don't know about?

I would assume the Ditko estate was looking for a massive payday settlement in the first place since the bar to show the characters weren't work for hire is very high.

Vancouver FanExpo, I remember them pulling the same poo poo with Sorbo in Toronto a couple years ago.

I'm pretty sure someone in booking and social media at fan expo is/are giant chuds. I used to go to Denver Comic Con from before it was bought out and it was a good time and even after I left the state, it was my one "travel to" show. Then they were bought out by fan expo and the show turned to poo poo. I can't remember if it was this past one or the one before that they started adding Carano but my wife asked some questions about it on their social media and got absolutely dressed down and shat on by their social media in response. At that point we both decided to find another show to go to.

We don't seem to have missed much. Every thing I've heard basically indicates they've made the whole show a terrible experience.

I had been wondering about Penthouse Comics. I've been seeing a lot of very good artists on covers but hadn't heard much about the interiors. Sad that it's much worse quality. I too would like to support (good) comics for grownups.
