May this be the :yotj: for many of us.

Especially me, since I was laid off in November and need to move to another state as soon as my gf decides which university she's going to go to.

Please open the old thread, some of us still use it for work and this is affecting production.

The job market for tech workers is TERRIBLE rn. After I got laid off I could barely get an interview for a mid-to-senior level position. I realized that because the market is so bad I'm competing with people more skilled than I am who are aiming low.

I ended up having to aim low myself and go back to desktop support. Weird thing is I just got converted from a contractor to working directly for my employer and I'm now making significantly more money than I did at my last job.

Aim low if you need to and climb the ladder again, it'll happen a lot faster this time bc you're already very skilled.

Just took a desktop support job myself, after putting months of time and effort into getting my cybersecurity certifications. Why does IT go through so many "lots of jobs/no jobs" cycles? Is it just because it's one of the first departments to get cut when a company isn't doing well?

A promotion came in - moving from government helldesk to government cybersecurity in a few weeks, just waiting for someone to start in 2 weeks to backfill me. No paperwork signed yet, hoping I can negotiate a pay bump.

Wasn't ubiquiti originally spun off from Motorola a long time ago? I vaguely remember there being a reason that their gear used a different wattage than everyone else.

I know I've been guilty of frying some wireless bridges in the past by not checking the PoE settings. That's a mistake you only make once or twice.

No, it was started by some radio engineers who did a lot of work for Apple and some other silicon valley companies. I did tech support for them for a short period. Company was run by engineers, and that results in a LOT of very odd priorities.

I got hosed over yesterday.

I'm working helldesk on a military research base as a contractor. The company I work for posted a position for the Cybersec team in the same room I work in. They posted the job with a pay range of 45-60k.

My last job was cybersec, I only took this helldesk job because I was unemployed and needed SOMETHING at the time. 60k is more than I was making, I figured I could push for it.

I get accepted, get the paperwork for the transfer. They offer me 55k. I counter with 60k, and explain that 55k, while slightly more than my helldesk pay, still leaves me struggling financially.

I get called down to the contract manager, who is looking upset. Dude appears to legitimately feel bad, but he explains that the contract is "Fixed Rate" and the government set salary ranges on every position - ones that can't be exceeded. 55k is the cap for both helldesk AND cybersec analyst roles.

Worse, he tells me that a coworker in helldesk just put in his 2 weeks a few days before he called me down. Contract states that helldesk MUST be fully manned, which means they can't even transfer me on schedule. I had been training up a rookie to replace me, and they are now being used to backfill the person leaving. They now need to find another replacement person to backfill me before I can be moved.

I'm now trying to figure out if it's even legal for this company to have advertised the position as paying more than they could actually offer. And I am loving PISSED that I'm stuck doing helldesk even longer because I missed the window for signing the transfer agreement by a few minutes because I thought that the company had room to negotiate.

Went in for an interview at the local Native American Casino for an IT Helpdesk Supervisor position, meet with both the IT Director and IT Manager.

10 minutes in, the IT Director goes "Is there a reason you applied to this position instead of the Application Support Engineer?"

I mean, yes. Largely in that I didn't see the Application Support Engineer position because no word in that job title matches anything I have been searching on. They pull up the job posting and show it to me, and it's honestly a good match. "Sure, I'll apply to that position after this interview."

They just go "oh we can just do it now" and suddenly the interview is for a different position that I hadn't prepared for. I mean, it sounds interesting and it's more involved in fixing issues than the helpdesk manager one was going to be. That's a plus in my books, I like digging into weird issues. Downside is the pay range is slightly lower.

Still, I'm a bit astounded at that happening, and I'm not sure what to think about it. I'm assuming that means they don't want me for the manager position, but is it a strong thing in my favor for the support engineer position?
