I'm going to be optimistic in the other way on a few points because I've been the guy predicting "Dana is out this year" for like 5 years:
  • Dana's bravado suggests insecurity, and he's certainly less valuable to the company than he wants everyone to believe
  • He has bad relationships with many stakeholders including regulatory bodies and fighters
  • It runs contra to the WMMA "empowerment" narrative to have a domestic abuser as their boss
  • We're not that far from the human cockfighting era, in fact I can think offhand of one current UFC fighter who fought in that era, and WME-IMG and Disney might not think too highly of their company with fragile PR being run by a documented wife beater

The UFC's PR and reputation is fragile, and there's no denying that this happened. It's plausible that Power Slap never airs (as it has already been the target of lots of serious critique) and Dana goes away to become the most divorced guy ever.

LFA 149: Bunes vs. Horiuchi
Gila River Resorts & Casinos - Wild Horse Pass, Chandler, AZ
UFC Fight Pass - 10 PM ET

Welcome to 2023. In 2022, we didn’t get a meaningful event until the second week of the year. The first week of the year doesn’t have much, quantity-wise, but there are Live Fights and one of them is Consequential.

Felipe Bunes (12-6) vs. Yuma Horiuchi (10-5) (125 Title)

Only one of the previous nine LFA Flyweight champions has lost their title in a fight, when Brandon Moreno defeated Maikel Pérez for this title at LFA 69 in 2019. The other eight all vacated the title when they signed with the UFC. The latest, Carlos Mota, won it in August and signed with the UFC in October. The title essentially represents a UFC contract.

Felipe “Felipinho” Bunes is a 33-year-old Pitbull Brothers fighter working to rebuild his career after he started 10-2 and then went to ACA where he proceeded to lose 3 straight. He finished in ACA with a win, but then immediately came into the main event of LFA 124 in February with a submission loss to Jussier Formiga. He rebounded with a split decision victory over Wascar Cruz in July, and was scheduled to fight Yuma Horiuchi in October but the fight was scrapped and rescheduled for this show, as the main event for the LFA Flyweight Title. Bunes was granted his second-degree black belt from the Pitbull Brothers in December.

“Ichiban” Yuma Horiuchi is fighting for the LFA title for a second time. In July 2021, he lost a split decision in the main event of LFA 110 against Charles Johnson, in a fight that was for the interim title, which got promoted to the main title, which got Johnson into the UFC after he defended his title twice. Horiuchi got his start in DEEP, and his first fight in the US was being brought into Gladiator Challenge to defeat Miguelito “Darkness” Marti (1-28 at the time, 2-41 currently, lost to Henry Cejudo in 2013). Horiuchi is 3-2 in LFA and also lost to Topnoi Kiwram in Singapore in the first round of the flyweight Road to UFC tournament in June. He earned this shot, though with 2 straight wins in LFA, over 6-0 Mark Climaco in November 2021 via TKO then over 23-7 Juan Puerta in October via submission.

Ben Tynan (3-0) vs. Henrique Silva (5-2) (265)

When you’ve got the look and the charisma, you get the push. “Vanilla Thunder” Ben Tynan is 3-0 as a pro, 8-0 as an amateur, and has finished every fight. He has two round 1 finishes in LFA. And he’s 6’3” and fights with one of the grossest (complimentary) mustaches you’ve ever seen. So they are building him as the next “strap a rocket to him” heavyweight. Tynan fights out of Elevation Fight Team and made it to the NCAA Championship Qualifier at 285 pounds in 2017, but did not qualify.

Tynan’s latest victim on the hype train is 37-year-old Henrique “Montanha” Silva, whose last two fights were a submission loss in August 2019 and a TKO loss in September 2016. The two were slated to meet in November, but the bout got moved to this show. Silva is also 6’3”, so they were clearly looking for a similarly big guy to make a nice highlight for Tynan. Godspeed, Montanha.

The LFA Heavyweight title is currently vacant as “Salsa Boy” Waldo Cortes-Acosta moved up to the UFC and is winning there. Who knows how many more wins Vanilla Thunder needs before they give him a chance at the belt.

Rest of Card
Marcus McGhee (5-1) vs. Luciano Ramos (8-7) (135)
An Ho (2-0) vs. Edwin De Los Santos (2-1) (125)
Eric McConico (5-2-1) vs. Billy Elekana (4-1) (185)
Eric Fimbres (1-0) vs. Tony Charles (2-1) (185)
Cedric Katambwa (2-0) vs. Adam Garcia (1-0) (155)

Tbh men being able to hit women who hit them first has become an opinion on Reddit that’s basically universally popular, and Redditors will pile on with comments supporting the man in any situation like that. It’s not just a UFC fan thing.

I came into watching the video looking for one slap each because I took the reports at face value. I’m an idiot. I see at a minimum two slaps from Dana and the face push, I can’t definitely see punches but I wouldn’t be surprised either way.

Just in case anyone is unclear about this, and I'm not calling out anyone in particular

He has her wrist at the beginning of the clip. She's trying to get away and he's restraining her. That is an attack and Dana initiated it. Even if someone is disgusting enough to argue that it's ok for him to hit her "if she started it", she did not start it. When I help to teach women's self defense classes, "some dude is grabbing your wrist and isn't letting you leave" is literally the first lesson, and we teach the women to be far meaner than to use a mere slap.
