The buck stops at my ass
Very empty at the yokozuna/ozeki ranks right now, with Shodai finally not managing to Shodai to a meagre kachikoshi when kadoban. Historically empty even, a single ozeki isn't uncommon, but usually happened with a multiple yokozuna active, but only 2 combined only happened once, in January 1993 with 2 ozeki and 0 yokozuna (when Akebono won promotion to yokozuna and Takanohana to ozeki). With Teru's knees being a complete and utter mystery as to how much longer they'll last until they are completely destroyed, and Shodai being Shodai, it might even get emptier up there soon.

Honestly, I think they won't start pressuring Teru to resign for a long while. A longterm kyujo yokozuna might not be the best look, but IMO it's a lot better than shining a light on their total lack of ozeki prospects right now.

If you're new to the thread or new to sumo you should try out playing fantasy, it really helps you follow storylines around the basho.

Note that the only Y/O candidate right now is Takakeisho, since Teru is kyujo. My spreadsheet can't accommodate consolidating rank sets, and also making substantial rules modifications to deal with extenuating circumstances is incredibly un-sumo-like. As a result, basically everyone will get Takakeisho. This just makes the S/K pick even more important!

If you've never played Fantasy before, check out the rules. In brief: just choose 3 guys at each rank, and you'll be drafted a team of dudes. That's all you really need to do, although you can trade during the first week if you want (most people don't). It's really fun and helps you get more familiar with lower-ranked guys.

Get your draft picks in by Saturday night Pacific time so I can do the draft for Sunday! Hakkeyoi!

I'm back in fantasy san'yaku for the first time in over a year and boy are my arms tired!

My training has gone well, and I'm ready to assert my style of fantasy sumo to the utmost this basho. My iron-clad rules continue to be: Death Before Shodai; gently caress Ryuden and Ichi; and Papayasu Is The Best.

This basho I'm celebrating Chiyomaru's return to the top division by selecting only the Very Best Roundbois. This stable is full of the roundest, bounciest, cuddliest men in sumo. Welcome back, oh eternally round one. Now put on that pea green mawashi and get me some wins!

Really wanted to take Daieisho over Mitake in M1-5 but I just can't break the gimmick. Also torn taking Oho over Hokutofuji; both are round and Hokuto has the better pre-match warmup routine. But I gave youth and suppleness the edge in this one.

Papayasu. Always Papayasu. I was down with back spasms for a week after Christmas and took some small comfort in the fact that he's fought the same problems and still does an amazing job when he's not landing on his head. He'll (probably) be fine.

Lots of guys I like in sanyaku this time. Having to choose between Koto/Hosho/Papa Bear/Waka bros was tough.

Mita's been consistently good at higher levels so hopefully his struggles are injury related and he can come back.

Oho and Ura are also tough to choose between.
