NHK world's site is decent for watching ongoing tournaments, though that's only makuuchi. They also don't keep the videos up once the next tournament starts, which is also a big bummer. I remember a post from Kintamayama where he said that some rikishi (active or maybe retired by then) said he watched his channel to see his own past matches, which is a real indictment.

The sumo forum is speculating that this is a measure intended to humiliate Hakuho into resigning because they don't want to be seen to be firing him. It's clear that, in addition to his real culpability in this situation, there was also a faction that was waiting to pounce on him (c.f., the fact he had to sign a special pledge before being allowed to become a sumo elder).

Telling the others not to talk to the media as part of CYA, I assume.

Fearless posted:Rolling things up in this manner suggests to me that there was never any serious intention towards fixing the situation, just a desire to draw out the humiliation and avoid scandal. I feel very bad for Hakuho because he sank a lot of his own money into founding that stable. There were some who predicted he would get ratfucked in such a manner but it's so ridiculously blatant.

I don't think there's any reason to pretend there haven't been hazing or violence scandals in sumo before, but oddly the punishments never seemed to be this harsh. It's good for such behavior to be punished but I doubt the leadership's sincerity. In any case, it seems likely they'll get their wish of having their hands clean of Hakuho.

I love Abi even if (or maybe because) he's a knucklehead. I like Ryuden's sumo but as above posts point out, his off-ring activities are unfortunate.
