Vemundr will keep teaching the ways of the Seidr, first to mother, then to the Svartrfrigga siblings.

Hidden Wisdom is willing to back up and reinforce the Loyalists, save for any demands Erika has. The children of Thoke are not yet old enough to be raised as witches.

Mechanical question: if Vemundr is given land, he'd still be part of the court as a councilor, but he'd also have his own court, and take all his unladed family there, and they would no longer be able to hold positions in Thoke's council? Is that right?

I haven't thought about a faction being able to back another faction, I guess I'll try to come up with a way it would work with its own pros and cons.

This is correct. Vemundr gaining one county will weaken the Hidden Wisdom by one influence due to Erika losing her councilor position. On the flip side Vemundr will be able to make more Svartrfrigga babies if he takes concubines.

Currently Vemundr and Nils are most likely to be given a county as they have been councilors since the beginning.

Chapter 9: The second Ting and lots of babies, 1st of January 877 - 29th of October 877.

The second Ting of Thoke's rule had come to an end. This time it was his own power as a ruler that had the most influence, having conquered many lands and becoming a seiðr. There were also the warlike raiders for profit lead by Nils and Rolando who were considered influential. Thoke presented his own goal of expanding the realm and training even more powerful soldiers.

The personal goal of getting another duchy title and creating a maximum size huscarl men-at-arms regiment is now in effect.

Rolando spoke up in the Ting, presenting a demand for the chieftain.

TorakFade posted:

Rolando, as the self-proclaimed head of the Warlike Raiders for Profit, puts forth another suggestion, though it won't be much different... we proved our might against the neighbors and our warriors are incredibly powerful, so we should conquer more land, a lot more land, so that the mighty Thoke will have such a vast demesne that he will find it beneficial to grant some land to his courtiers and turn them into faithful vassals.

Of course, logic dictates that members of the faction should definitely be considered among the first to receive this honor, what with being expert stewards...

Thoke had no problem agreeing to this, he was planning on conquering more lands anyway.

: My people! We have become stronger thanks to our raids and might and have unified weak tribes into our influence, we will continue on this path for now and seek to conquer more.

: We will first see if there are weak foes near us, it would be unwise to anger any powerful Jarls or Christian Kings.

: I will continue to focus on building up our lands to be as prosperous and productive as possible.

Staying on domain for the next five years should give us at least two perks, which will go into professional workforce and centralization to build stuff faster and increase dev growth in our capital, which we'll probably change at some point.

The chieftain had increased the size of his domain so much that he could not rule all of it without help. He thought that either his chancellor or steward would probably deserve the first pieces of land.

His chancellor told him that there was no need to give him any land right now and to go ahead and reward someone else. Thoke granted Tórshavn to Nils, who became his first vassal.

After the Ting he held a feast with his family and new vassal.

And manages to really connect with Nils, it's good to be on good terms with your vassals and councilors.

The feast ends and Thoke resumes his duties. He reflects on his ten of years of rule. He has managed to grow Austrland from a small tribe into a big Jarldom, even reaching outside Iceland.

He has become respected.

Feared, even.

He starts training some more warriors, for now he'll wait until he has a sufficient amount of them before going raiding or conquering again.

The goal is to both get another duchy title and train 5 stacks of these bad boys. They're going to cost roughly 1k prestige.

---------------------

The chieftain was enjoying spending time with his family. He was proud of his kids and grateful to have so many. They had recently had their fifth, little Ástríðr.

Elsewhere in the realm, Erika the Gydja had been discussing with Abdullah.

She had been talking to him to learn more about the Christians religion. Seeing as he was from the south, he had quite a lot to teach her.

It had proven very fruitful. She had learned a lot and the two of them were now friends.

The Svartrfrigga siblings were all married now and there were three young ones. One of them was struck with a disease, and everyone was hoping Abdullah was able to help her...

Nils and Svanhild were enjoying their new elevated position in Tórshavn and had another son, named Hásteinn. Nils had also managed to form many friendships with prestigious people.

Rolando and Ingrid had also had their first child, a boy they named Ragnar.

Thyra's brother and sister had both had a son, and she was happy for them. Her mother however had grown old and infirm, and was angry at the thought of not being able to die with honor, in battle, and go to Valhalla.

Sinech was busy with all the kids that were growing up, trying to teach them about important things.

---------------------

Thoke's plans were initially to conquer the islands between Alba and Iceland, but recently a war had erupted there.

The Duke of Moray, Áed, had began a conquest of the northern island. Unfortunately for him, Jarl Ivar decided to defend his fellow believers in Odin. For now it would probably be best to see how the situationt develops. Thoke could still conquer the third island just north of that one.

As for afterwards, Thoke saw two options before him.

He was open to any suggestions or advice on how to proceed.

---------------------

Finally I had the time for another update. This was a bit of a shorter one, just updating the Ting and showing how many kids have been popping up. Also some plans for the future. Of course we don't have to go for either Norway or Ireland but those are what the chieftain is currently considering.

As for the characters schemes:

Abdullah has finished teaching Asta tier 2 physician and doesn't currently have schemes queued up.
Erika has successfully finished her theological debate and made a friend and got a new shiny trait. She doesn't currently have more schemes queued up.
Rolando is learning gardener from his wife.
Sinech finished learning mystic and is now learning shieldmaiden.
Thyra has become a poet! She is now planning her pilgrimage.
Vemundr is teaching her mother to become a seiðr and thinks it's progressing well. He will then prioritize teaching other family members.

And of course, Thoke has become a seiðr and is now swaying characters with influence. Currently that is Rolando.

Raiding gives the county a 5 year nerf, during which it's takes longer and costs more to build buildings and the county has decreased levies and income. So the AI might not have built that many buildings on areas that are raided 24/7. Other than that it's whatever.

Chapter 10: Hello mainland, 30th of October 877 - 31st of December 881.

Thoke was having a meeting with his councilors, they were expecting Nils to come anytime soon. He had been spending most of his time in Tórshavn but came to meet the chieftain every few months.

As the steward entered the chieftain's hut he greeted him politely before informing him of a murder that had happened in the nearby tribe of Skálavágr. Thoke raised an eyebrow.

T: Whose murder?

N: A woman named Áslaug, the wife of the chieftain's eldest son.

T: What do we know?

N: Last I heard they hadn't caught anyone.

The rest of the councilors had been quiet up to this point. Vemundr was first to speak up.

V: You said her name was Áslaug. Was she from Iceland by any chance?

N: Actually yes, she was originally from here.

V: I see.

Thoke saw the slightest twitch in the corner of his chancellors mouth.

T: What do you think, my brother?

V: It's truly unfortunate that such a brutal murder has occurred. We cannot turn a blind eye to this kind of lawlessness happening so close to our territory. Chief Einarr seems to be struggling to maintain control, and it may be in our best interest to extend our influence over the tribe.

Erika the Gydja was nodding beside her husband.

E: It is our duty to protect our people, and if this neighboring tribe is unable to do so, we must take action.

Thoke nodded in agreement, turning to his spymaster mother-in-law.

T: Ingjerðr, what do your spies say?

The spymaster cleared her throat.

I: That the tribe is weak and chief Einarr is craven. They won't stand a chance against our forces.

Thoke nodded again and glanced at all of his councilors.

T: Then so be it. We will conquer them and establish law and order. They will prosper under our influence. Vigdis, start gathering our troops. Nils, prepare the provisions. We move at dawn.

The next day, war is declared.

It goes predictably.

Thoke grants the island to his seneschal as a reward for his loyal services.

He also takes some time to educate his second son. As a diligent man, he is drat sure not going to let his son be lazy. Let him be gluttonous, maybe he'll gain some mass and be a formidable warrior.

The island just north of Alba was lost to the Christians. Thoke is a bit disappointed, as he was planning on conquering it for himself. He had made a passionate speech at the last Ting, promising to conquer another Jarldom. He didn't have too much time anymore.

He considered Irland. Unfortunately due to the way the local chieftains controlled the land, he would have to battle several strong chieftains or then go for southern Irland. But southern Irland was very far from his realm, difficult to control.

The lower picture is the de jure map mode.

Thoke decided to ignore Irland for now. Instead he trained some more impressive warriors.

We went raiding in Britannia once to afford to max them out, but literally nothing interesting happened. We didn't fight anyone, just raided south England and Wales and ransomed some wives immediately.

He then decided to act quickly, there is only one year left to keep his promise he made at the Ting.

He declares war on three small tribes simultaneously.

As long as they don't allow the three tribes to join forces, they'll win every battle.

They manage to capture the chieftess of one of the tribes, who had inherited rulership from her father as she had no brothers. This would speed things up nicely.

They also captured her husband, who was the eldest son of the northern tribe's chieftain. They quickly marched north to face the father in battle.

But as luck would have it, the old man died before the battle started. They now had two of the chiefs captive.

Only the southernmost tribe remained.

And that didn't take long.

Meanwhile back in Iceland, Thoke's second son had defended the son of Vemundr and Erika in a fight and the boys had become friends.

This was good, Thoke thought. He also considered Vemundr a friend, it was good that the little ones maintained good relations between their families.

He had assigned Erika to teach the ways of Odin to his youngest son, as well as her language. It wasn't long until the boy was speaking with her in that strange language only she and her own children spoke.

Speaking of little ones, Thoke and Angrboda were once again blessed by more children, this time it was twins!

Totally forgot to screencap the birth, but here they are!

Afterwards, Thoke becomes the Jarl of GulaÞingslög.

He grants the lands to Emundr, Orvar and Magnus. The first two he already knows to be reliable and capable, while the third one seems useful.

Conquering more land was good, but now they had to think about King Björn loving Ironside, who had established control of Denmark as well as Sweden.

He could swear fealty to the mighty King. This would deter anyone from attacking Iceland anytime soon. But this wasn't something he was going to do without seeing what the realm thought. He could also try to seek an alliance with the King. Of course he could simply do nothing and see what happens.

All of this would surely be discussed at the third Ting of his rule, which was due next month...

---------------------------------

After the previous short update, we had a bit of a longer one now. Once again it's time for a Ting! Get to joining, suggesting and voting! I'll post an updated list of player characters, kids and non-lowborns in our realm later on, as well as the current list of factions and their influences.

Rolando is absolutely overjoyed. Going from a refugee coming from far away lands to ruling over his own land! Granted, it's a cold and lonely island in the middle of the sea, but compared to what awaited him at home? Phew. He already spotted some viable space for new farmlands, and can't help but notice his island is right between the tribe's capital and the newly conquered jarldom, and there's bound to be people traveling back and forth all the time... maybe he can figure out a way to turn it into a rest stop or trading post of sorts, make some money out of it, especially if the tribe expands into Alba too. With the help of his lovely wife he'll try to recreate gardens in his castle, as much as the weather allows, and be a good father for his son Ragnar, teaching him all he can.

About the realm at large... the looming of king Björn is one of the potential reasons why he thought to steer clear from Norway, feeling that the tribe's - and his - future would be better served by raiding and eventually maybe even conquering the rich southern european regions. Being under such a powerful king would surely be a defensive advantage, and we could become much more powerful by directly conquering land from bigger realms which would be nice indeed... but it could also turn out to be a curse, as the realm may fracture on succession and end up being more of a burden by being subjects to the whims of someone else, and be much more subject to the meddling that bigger kingdoms inevitably have.

And also the fact that the proud free men of Iceland shouldn't just bend the knee so easily and for just a potential advantage in the future that may or may not come to fruition. Things seem to be going well for us after all so far, and Björn probably barely knows we exist. An alliance might be a better avenue...

Besides, he knows nothing about Björn himself, his family or how his realm is set up; so he opts to wait a little and review what he knows about the tribe and all other current affairs before giving his opinion about any matter.

Can we have some info about Björn, as much as the tribe knows anyway? :)

Here's the current scheme situation.

Rolando learned gardener from his wife.
Thyra has finished her pilgrimage.
Vemundr taught his middle sister the seiðr ways and is now teaching his brother.

Let's have a brief look at our lands.

We moved our capital to Vestrland because it had more development and a better climate. Taiga gives only -5% to development growth compared to -25% in Austrland. It's still pretty poo poo but it's not as poo poo as before. Vestrland has three basic buildings and is missing palisades.

Sudrland has markets and war camps.

Our old capital has war camps and palisades and is getting markets.

Nordrland has gathering halls and is soon finished with war camps.

Tórshavn (I'll just stick to calling it that for now) only has gathering halls, but we haven't had it for too long yet. Note that Nils is getting more money out of this than Thoke is from the capital.

Shetland is pretty poo poo at the moment.

The northernmost county we conquered in Norway has palisades, which is honestly nice if we get attacked at some point.

Hörðaland has war camps and palisades, as well as a special building that can't be built until we have gotten a lategame tech.

Rogaland is also pretty poo poo right now, but it has another special building, the requirement is being the King of Norway.

There's a 'Found Witch Coven' decision which the house head can take when a house has 7 adult members, of whom at least 60% have the witch trait including the heir. All children educated by witches automatically get witched, and every member's conversion success rate goes up, in addition to a dynasty trait. Vemundr is aiming for this and wishes to do it when possible, and advises his friend, brother and fellow Seidr Thoke to do the same.

The heir, Thoke 2.0, being educated in intrigue by his mother. He's friends with his youngest brother and the daughter of Vigdis' brother.

The second son, being educated in martial by Thoke. Friends with, Erik, the son of Vemundr and Erika.

The oldest daughter, being educated in diplo by Abdullah. She speaks arabic. Also friends with Erik.

The youngest son, being educated in learning by Erika. He speaks chinese. Friends with his oldest brother.

The second daughter. She is pensive, but can't be assigned a guardian yet, she needs to turn 6.

There's also the twin daughters but they are too young to have any traits yet.

Our sister's son.

And our brother's daughter. Yes her mother is a sister of Ingrid.

Erik is a zealous and charming boy. He is being tutored in diplo by his father and is friends with two of the the chieftains kids.

Fredrika is rowdy, that means she is better suited for martial or intrigue and less so for learning.

A Svartfrigga without black hair! She is the daughter of the middle sister.

Another brown haired Svartrfrigga. This one was fathered by the lazy brother.

The older son of Nils is handsome and bossy, he is being tutored in stewardship by his father.

I switched to Nils just to see what his other son is like. Looks like he has his mothers blonde hair and fertile genes. Let's not think how we know that about a four year old. He is already being tutored by his father but is too young for it to have an effect yet.

Rolando's son is charming and dripped the gently caress out. Surely he will be the undisputed fashion king of the realm.

Sinech's son is charming and was assigned intrigue education. He doesn't yet have a guardian.

Halla's son is also charming and is friends with the older brown haired Svartrfrigga.

----------------------------------------

Here's our vassals that are not played by anyone.

Emund, he has the southernmost county in Norway that we conquered. He only has one young daughter at the moment.

Our friend, Orvar. He has the middle province. He also has three sons and a daughter.

And a new face, Magnus. He is a rough terrain expert, which is useful considering Norway is mostly mountains and hills.

Here's a breakdown of the characters current influences.

Thoke's influence is calculated a bit differently from others:

+2 baseline
+4 from 4 county titles
+4 from 2 duchy title
+2 councilor bonus (to put him on par with councilors)
+1 ruler bonus
-3 from unhappy powerful vassals

Diplo 0
Martial +1
Stewardship 0
Intrigue -1
Learning 0

Sinech:

+2 baseline
+2 diplo
+2 learning
+1 court tutor position

Abdullah:

+2 baseline
+3 learning (previously incorrectly labeled as diplo)
+2 stewardship
+1 court physician position

Nils:

+2 baseline
+2 councilor bonus
+2 stewardship
+1 martial
+1 from one county
+2 friends with ruler

Rolando:

+2 baseline
+2 stewardship
+1 seneschal position
+1 from one county
+2 friends with ruler

Erika:

+2 baseline
+2 councilor bonus
+2 learning

Vemundr:

+2 baseline
+2 councilor bonus
+1 same house as ruler's spouse
+2 friends with ruler

Here's the updated faction list and suggestions.

Abdullah will properly rename his Faction into the Faction for the Betterment of Iceland, and also try to befriend his new comrade. After that is done, he'd like to befriend Thoke, as well.

As far as suggestions are concerned, seeing how the quality of life in the Jarldom has improved significantly, Abdullah will support Erika's idea. Incorporating a holy site into the realm would probably let us gather more intel and taxes from all the pilgrims .

I might not have made this clear but Abdullah and Erika are already friends due to their theological debate/discussion :)

Also I previously established this rule,

To fix a possible exploit where someone creates a faction, then immediately switches to another, destroying the faction they created and forcing a cooldown, the one who created the faction can't leave it if they are the only person in it.

which I'm going to change a little bit. A leader can switch to another faction even if they are the only one in it, but they must have been non-influential two times in a row in Ting meetings.

Currently WRP would be number one and they would be able to make four demands, but have yet to make any. I'll keep this up open for a bit so that they would have at least one.
Faction for the Betterment of Iceland or FBI would be second, and could make two demands. Currently there is only one, but Abdullah can come up with his own as well.

I'll leave this up for a few days and allow potential readers to still vote or join factions.

Oh crap I thought I posted.

Rolando for the WRP would like to put forth the following demands: first of all, increase control in the realm where needed to pacify the last uppity locals who disagree with Thoke's rule. Then building more economic buildings, at least one of which in Shetland. Also expanding the realm by at least 3 counties is always a good idea and lines up with those plans of conquering holy sites and new jarldoms... though, in case his friend Nils has better ideas he'd certainly defer to his superior experience as chieftain and councilor.

As far as alliances go, diplomacy is not what the faction is interested in, but he'd personally be doubtful of an alliance with Sweden - Bjorn has lived many long years already and we'd have to call on the alliance sooner rather than later, before it "expires" let's say. But he also doesn't know much about other realms, so can't suggest anyone else...

Vemundr sees which way the wind is blowing and jumps ship to the Faction for the Betterment of Iceland, to shore up its influence.
