Hamlin had covid six weeks ago, and covid raises the risk of cardiac events for a year. So that could have been a factor, although I don't think it can be determined with an individual case.

Hopefully the prompt medical care saved his life. I've been through cardiac arrest after a sports injury, went on a ventilator, and made a full recovery.

But he went into cardiac arrest, right? That means his heart stopped?

Yeah. Intubation is standard procedure after a cardiac arrest like this. This is the best news we could expect at this time, but his life is still in danger.

really thought the first time there was a life-or-death situation on the NFL field it would be on a much more vicious hit than that. would not be surprised to see some more shocking player retirements in the next couple years.

A player named Chuck Hughes died of an on-field heart attack in 1971. After that, the NFL made sure to always have an ambulance and paramedics ready at the games. If Hamlin pulls through, it'll be because he was able to get prompt CPR.

I wouldn't read anything into the hospital not releasing an update. Even in a best-case scenario, Hamlin won't be conscious until tomorrow morning. Then he'll have weeks of close medical supervision to determine if his heart, brain, and other vital organs are damaged.

The NFL, NHL, and MLB have each had one player die from an injury or heart attack during a game. Each league changed their policies to prevent it from happening again.

I am all for this but what do you actually change to stop this? It appears to be an absolute freak accident unless the dude had a known heart condition or something.

After Chuck Hughes' heart attack, the NFL ensured that every game would have paramedics and an ambulance next to the field, and that policy may have saved Hamlin's life. I think there's nothing they could change in the rules of the game to prevent this, other than changing it to flag football.

This all sounds similar to what I went through, so I really hope Hamlin makes it. I went into cardiac arrest in front of paramedics, I had to be resuscitated twice, I was on a ventilator, and I had lung damage. The doctors told me that the odds for a young person surviving a cardiac arrest are much better than average. In my case it was caused by a pulmonary embolism from an injury in beer league softball, and I went back to playing the next year. I don't know if he'll be able to play football again, but he'll have one hell of a charitable foundation to help run.

There are actual back specialists and physiotherapists who will do all the stuff a non-quack chiropractor does. Athletes are definitely not immune to woo bullshit - remember when every golfer was wearing a magnetic bracelet to align their blood flow?

Yeah, when I woke up on a ventilator, they gave me paper to communicate and I wrote "SHOOT ME" a bunch of times. It hurt worse than the cardiac arrest did. Really glad to hear he's regained consciousness, and I hope he's getting the best pain meds in the world.

That's interesting, I've never experienced that "skip", not when I had a major concussion or when I went into cardiac arrest. With the concussion I remember everything before and after clearly, and when I went into cardiac arrest I had moments of awareness as I was drifting in and out of consciousness. I woke up during surgery once and they put me back under; then I came to in the recovery room sooner than expected so I got up to grab some reading material because no one was there to tell me how long I'd have to wait.

You'd have to ban every ball sport where the ball travels into the general vicinity of a person like tennis, racquetball, squash, etc too.

You'd have to look at the rate of player deaths, and life-changing injuries, for each sport to determine where to draw the line. Football and association football have much higher rates of CTE than other sports. There have been proposals to ban headers in soccer to reduce the rate of brain damage. Baseball banned slide tackles a few years ago because of the injuries to Buster Posey and Ruben Tejada. But with football, tackles are a much more fundamental part of the sport so it would take greater changes to prevent injuries. I think CTE is still the greatest health concern for football so any injury reduction efforts should be focused primarily on that, with preventing commotio cordis as a secondary priority.

Yeah I'd expect him to be at some sort of rehab facility? I have no idea how you'd handle a healthy young adult patient cause all I see is 50+ stroke/heart attack PT/OT rehab discharges. Kind of doubt there would be much PT/OT for an uncomplicated cardiac arrest peak athlete young adult that got incredibly rapid CPR and ROSC. Still hoping he gets a cardiac mri if he hasn't already.

When it happened to me, they wouldn't let me have any sugar or caffeine until I got a cardiac MRI, because there could be damage that would be exacerbated by anything that made my heart race. They wheeled me out of the ICU to the MRI machine. Hamlin is recovering so fast that I'd guess muscle atrophy won't even be a big problem for him.

I had PTSD from my injury that led to the embolism and cardiac arrest. For a while, I felt freaked out just standing on first base. Hopefully Hamlin isn't affected too badly by this, but if he is he's got the best therapy money can buy and millions of people encouraging him.
