My humble suggestion: It doesn't have to be for April but I think it'd be neat to have one of the months be a movie month, picking one movie each from '93, '03, and '13. Could be a fun change of pace and it'd be less of a time commitment for folks, which I mention because of the lack of posts over Kino's Journey.

It's a change of pace that widens the pool of choices and the length thing is why I've been voting for shorter series in general. Though personally speaking I would have loved to watch and post about kino's journey had I just not rewatched it a couple of months ago oops

Here's my nominations: 1993 - Ocean Waves. Yeah it's a Ghibli movie but it's one of the lesser seen ones. 2003 - While I'm tempted to say Tokyo Godfathers because it's a masterpiece and if even one person watches it for the first time I'd consider that a success, I'm gonna go with something way more obscure and say My Sister Momoko, a movie I remember feeling kinda sloppy but was nonetheless emotionally effective. 2013 - Real hard to pick, what a killer year for movies. I am gonna nominate Short Peace because it has a good adaption of an Otomo oneshot manga. edit: alternate 2013 nomination: Garden of Words, in honor of the new Shinkai movie getting an English release this April. For 1993 I'd go with Ocean Waves, sounds potentially interesting. For 2003 I'd personally pick Tokyo Godfathers,,the best Christmas anime. Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem would also be an interesting pick. For 2013 I'd go with either the popular Patema Imverted or the relatively unknown Yoyo and Nene, the Little Witch Sisters.

1993: Also nominating Ocean Waves, this one has been on my list for a while. 2003: Tokyo Godfathers just in case somebody reading this thread hasn't seen it yet. 2013: This one really is tough. I would be happy with any number of picks here but I'll go for The Tale of the Princess Kaguya since I've been playing Okami.

i watched the first 4 episodes of kino's journey tonight. first time viewer (i've also never seen lain or anything else by the director but i can tell already that i'll be fixing this mistake sooner rather than later) although i was aware of the kino + talking motorcycle go visit weird places premise beforehand from anime nerd cultural osmosis. i figured it would be kind of like anime invisible cities, and i'm very happy to report that so far it is literally anime invisible cities. biggest surprise for me is how ominous and brutal the atmosphere is. kino is certainly contemplative and prone to introspection -- and it looks like we're going to get some sweeter/playful cities like the cat ear folks -- but every time it feels like things are settling down it jump cuts to quick draw practice or creepy ambient music starts playing. the director probably had other aesthetic goals in mind when he added the artificial scanlines, but this random 480p torrent looks much better than i thought it would in 2023 and that weird design choice has a lot to do with it. that and the extreme color palettes a lot of the cities have been working with. the cannibal slave truck episode in particular is a great example; pretty much every scene is either pitch black or super blown out white light sources and i honestly don't know if it would function as well with a higher resolution. so far the show rules. hopefully i can pound out the rest of the show over the next 2 days to live the authentic traveler experience

yeah kino 2003 has some really striking aesthetics. im not sure if its part of this but i recommend the 2007 country of illness movie too, they got most of the staff back for that so its got some neat imagery. given the sickness theme they just dye the whole thing in matrix green but it kind of owns the whole 'the world is still beautiful theme' really comes across in the slapdash tone and how things go up and down, its neat

id suggested movie month before but in december because its a month that people will likely have less time to devote to anime, and 3 movies is a lot less watching than many of the options that (i subjectively) think will get picked over the course of the year. but, if we are committing to april, then dbz movie 8 (broly), tokyo godfathers, and little witch academia would be my votes. if lwa is deemed too short even though it was a theatrical release then, uhh...dbz battle of gods, idk, 2013 a little light on the movie films unfortunately.

i like how much the middle section of the show shifts narrative styles between episodes. really helps it capture all sorts of wonderful and horrifying aspects of our human journey. also definitely excited to see how things evolve and wrap up over the last third; i can't really imagine there being some final climax, but i guess we'll probably get some perspective or closure on kino's dream/purpose/reason for travelling as that's been a rather persistent theme for the last few episodes.

Kino's Journey 2003 was one of the most important things I encountered as a teenager, it really was life-changing to watch. I still think episode 2 is basically a perfect short story. The imagery of the snow, the rabbits, the slave traders sitting around a fire playing a sad tune, the ring they give Kino, and the fight behind the truck are just terrific. i kind of get the impression that the newer version that came out a few years ago is closer to the source material in tone. it wasn't horrible or anything but felt much more like an action adventure story, with kino as a kind of rugged ubermensch individualist. The 2003 version's strange, thoughtful meditation on the imperfect nature of the world is just exceedingly lovely. Ryuutarou Nakamura was a real one.

kino itself kind of changed as a series over time. for starters just look at how kino's design has changed lol  same artist to be clear, but the vibes are pretty different in a number of ways and the coloseum arc was extremely popular so the author tried to incorporate more action going forward

there's an earlier episode where a big heron style bird flies into some water with cool reflection visuals (and also a bunch of other birds are around the rest of the episode), and i almost made a joke about kino turning into patlabor 2. i'm glad i didn't back then because the land of peace episode is a much better analog. pretty sure you could overlay like any 5 random minutes of visuals from this episode over the just war/unjust peace conversation from patlabor 2 and the context wouldn't change a bit for either.

Meanwhile, 2017 Kino is weird (her backstory episode comes much later) so her doing morally shady stuff is just "Yep. Kino would do that, wouldn't she?" (Also, fun fact. One of the VAs in the final episode would go on to voice Kino in the remake series.)

I wouldn't say 2003 Kino was "normal." Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but as I recall she had this strict code of conduct forcing her to be as detached and nonjudgmental as humanly possible, usually acting only in self-defense. Being such an impassive observer to such extreme circumstances is hardly normal. Edit: For example, the cannibal slavers thing from early on is absolutely pretty horrific, but she doesn't actually plan to do anything about it until they attack her too.

She's still the same character as in the books or later show from her actions most of the time, but the presentation puts more emphasis on how Kino's positions line up with the viewer against the world, and less on where the viewer would conflict with Kino as compared to other versions of the story.

the final episode is amazing and a perfect resolution to the show. real happy i decided to watch this with 5 days left because it will probably end up very high on my Favorite Anime List. guess i'll keep not voting for the monthly anime because everyone else has been knocking it out of the park for the last two months. i think the aspect of the show i loved the most is that it managed to craft a compelling character arc for kino through 12 standalone episodes. it's fascinating to experience each episode gradually build on the same motifs of dreams, journeys, and the function of stories to show how kino goes from someone uncomfortable sharing a tale with an old man on his lunch break, to someone who understands their ultimate purpose as a traveler is to carry the stories of the people and cities they encounter. i kind of want to revisit the book country episode armed with some thematic clarity from the last few episodes because i imagine it would probably read a lot differently than my first viewing (also i forgot to screenshot the part where the head librarian says critics are crazy people who ruin other peoples lives so i can post it the next time someone talks about anime youtubers in the chat thread). i don't know if i'm going to watch the 2017 edition any time soon, but i am interested if it takes the same approach or if it tries to tell a slightly different story.

the 2017 version is pretty different. as i said it treats the material differently in terms of being a more straightforward adaptation, but also it has episodes focused on two other travelers, shizu from the colosseum arc and kino's teacher when she was younger. kino's teacher is generally more of a vagabond or outlaw than just a traveler and shizu is, as established in the colosseum arc, a jrpg protagonist.

I liked the Colosseum arc a lot, because like - in that kind of story, you're expecting it to be some sort of neat poetic justice, some final resolution to it, and instead she just decides to drat the whole place. The one time Kino decides to intervene, and she does it as messily as possible. The one that's stuck with me most is "A Tale of Feeding off of Others", though. I'm a big fan, so thanks to everyone that watched it.

We both saw more of the innocents suffering, and had Kino do more to make it some kind of heroic societal reform (through bloodshed) rather than "gently caress all y'all". Another point of comparison with 2017's setup is that it had a... less tragic world? A less broken one? In 2003, almost every country Kino went to was doomed, mad, or both. (The land of wizards episode is a bit of an exception, in addition to being another time Kino intervenes, but I'll set it aside for now to simplify my thoughts). The world was beautiful, but also tragic. Kino is a traveler by nature, but until the end, it almost seems to come easy, since there's nowhere that feels like it could be a home. 2017's structure, meanwhile, has a city where Kino could, if she chose, retire and live happily very early on, but that episode also puts more emphasis on the theme it plays with through the episode ordering, where Kino's nature is more of a question presented to the viewer. We see her at the Colosseum, we see her treated as a peer by very dangerous people, and we see other travelers take their own approaches to the world that differ from Kino's. It's not as strong a throughline, but by moving the explanation for Kino's history to near the end, and moving other stories earlier, it presents Kino as a question to be answered, rather than as our traveling companion and anchor of relative normalcy in the titular journeys.
