It's real.

Also, there's some interesting history on it. Basically, as the meaning of the word changed, we kept the meaning of the type of course it was and didn't give a poo poo about when it occurred in the meal, whereas in the 1930s, France switched from that meaning over to their usage of the word today.

What the gently caress. Also, lol at the longform I'm not owned article.

Several accounts of how he originally defined his scale exist, but the original paper suggests the lower defining point, 0 °F, was established as the freezing temperature of a solution of brine made from a mixture of water, ice, and ammonium chloride (a salt).[2][3] The other limit established was his best estimate of the average human body temperature, originally set at 90 °F, then 96 °F

No I mean the actual definition of temperature is incompatible with the idea of there being negative temperatures and the reason Kelvin (or Rankine lmao) is necessary is as our understanding of thermodynamics increased this discrepancy became irreconcilable with the math associated with these fields. Celcius is just as made up and dumb unit of temperature measurement as farenheight is. If a country was using a scale with absolute zero they could get smug about it but afaik none do, everyone just uses something arbitrary that made sense at the time of invention for whatever reason and stuck around due to convenience.

It's for telling us about the weather, so freezing point is a very useful thing to structure it around for the vast majority of people and how they engage with it. Kelvin is good for certain science situations.

Fahrenheit's freezing point of a specific brine (???) is not useful or relevant to anything.

While I would prefer all metric all the time, I can see why they'd say that celsius isn't quite as practical.

Anything above 50C is pretty much uninhabitable and is at the extreme end of conditions found on Earth, at least until the late 2020s.

Temperature scales can be used for things other than weather.
