you do nothing but keep track of the various fires that erupt everywhere and do your best to smother them for a time you have no time to look outside the code base and learn new things you get rusty and before long you can't get hired anywhere else you can't even fathom doing things differently anymore you block anyone who attempts to change things you have become the tech debt

The major issue is that refactoring one bit ends up multiple times the effort due to keeping the existing broken interfaces. Followed by then having to hack and maintain third party libraries for fixes because you cannot upgrade.
