Let's play Yi Xian! I'm following this guide:Xom posted:
Round 3, I thought Wu Ce would kill me in six turns, which was baseless, so I moved Thunder Sword to slot five, but I would've won if I kept my original timing and moved Qi Perfusion to play around Striding Into the Wind, as described in the guide: (qi delay,) Thunder Sword, Sword Slash, Sword Defence, Qi Perfusion, Flying Fang Sword. (My Sword Slash, Sword Defence, and Flying Fang Sword were lv.2 at the time.) Around this time I also exchanged a Thunder Sword, because triggering Curiosity every round in order to find Catnip is more important than 3-damage upgrades. Round 4, I don't know what I was thinking, I laid out a six-turn combo, but the opposing Lin Xiaoyue's previous-round board was telegraphing a five-turn kill, and since she had broken through, she wasn't collecting tier-one cards like me, and would be faster. So I should've trimmed my combo to Sword Slash, Qi Perfusion, Flying Fang Sword, Thunder Sword to do as much damage as I could in four turns, and take 2 less Destiny damage, which is based on the final HP difference. After this, I'm at 79 Destiny, but if I'd saved 6 last round and 2 this round, I'd be at 87. Round 5, I completed maxing Sword Slash and Sword Defence, so I broke through, but I'm still using up all my exchanges in order to dig for Catnip. I won Rounds 5 and 6 vs. Hua Qinrui and Mu Hu. Round 7, I combined my Flying Fang Swords and moved my Thunder Sword up to dodge Golden Rooster Independence, which Jiang indeed moved to cover my previous round's position. It weakened my Cloud Sword - Cat Paw instead, which was still enough to stall me a turn. I lost, but there was a 50% chance I would've won if his one Hexagram-less Falling Thunder had rolled in the bottom half of its range. Round 8, I broke through to Immortality for my power spike with Cat Spirit Chaos Sword, and I won. I would've lost if Wu Ce had randomly found a surprise Rooster to play. Round 9, Hua Qinrui broke through to Immortality for her power spike, and she won. Maybe she would've lost if she found no Water Spirit - Dive nor Metal Spirit - Iron Bone, who knows. Round 10, I randomly moved my Cat Spirit Chaos Sword to turn 7 to try to dodge the Iron Bone (her previous board was practically the same as the one in the screenshot below), which is nonsense, because if she wanted to counter me, she should move it to cover turns 5-7, and if she's lazy and doesn't move it, she's already covering turn 7. I would've won if I attacked straightforwardly on turn 5. So I could've saved 17 Destiny, but it requires her to make a mistake, which she did. For those keeping track, I could now be at 68 instead of 43. Round 11, Jiang broke through to Incarnation early and played a half-empty board. I won. Round 12, I broke through to Incarnation, and with my 19 exchanges, found Contemplate Spirits Rhythm, Cloud Dance Rhythm x2, and Finishing Touch. Hua still did not break through, and played an interesting board with Regen Tune. Her Dive missed, though to be fair, my five-turn combo wasn't quite lethal; however, Regen Tune helped keep me alive just long enough to do my combo again, eight turns later, and barely win, with 5 HP left. Round 13, still no improvement. I lose to Du Lingyuan, but I could win if I'd found Sword Intent Surge, my key card at Incarnation phase. Round 14, I decide to play around Wu's previous board of turn 4 Cide + turn 5 Cide, but I was too lazy to do the arithmetic, and my combo isn't even lethal! Azure Dragon, Chain, Cloud Dance is still only 11 Sword Intent, same as what I had before, but missing 6 damage from Sword Slash, which would make the difference to be lethal in this round. It didn't matter though, because she moved the first Cide to turn 5. I'm eliminated in 5th place; if I'd conserved the 6 + 2 + 17 Destiny earlier, I'd survive at 13 Destiny instead.

12 hours of playtime later: I love this game?? I've been doing some of the PVE stuff and enjoying the roguelike mode, but I've spent the majority of my time playing ranked with other players. It's really good! I really like optimizing my perfect hand, watching it in action, then tweaking or building to counter what I'm facing. I own starter sword man, free sword lady, dragon lady, and bearded hexagram man, and so far I like them all for different reasons. I want the rest! I especially want someone who is in the third faction so I can play with those mechanics outside of casual mode. Which is - I also enjoy the F2P mechanic encouraging me to play 1-2 tournaments and then stop, so I don't burn myself out, and so I can get more rewards tomorrow. This is already healthier for me than my usual pattern of "binge entire game forever, never touch again" (Monster Train at 169 hours, Slay the Spire at 112, etc)

I discovered that the original effect wording distinguishes between drawing cards from the card pool (抽) and gaining newly created cards (获得), despite that both have been translated as "draw", and updated my guide with the information:Xom posted:

Today in cards I'm driving my opponents insane by building the world's most annoying stall/turtle deck. Every card I play raises my HP/DEF and sometimes I boost my max HP, and they can't fuckin' kill me and we always have to end by time out, where I win by technical

This Jiang Ximing Exodia stuff is great. The gist of it is that Anthomania Formation plus Incarnation-phase Astral Eclipse is an absurd combo that always existed, but now you can use Luck to roll for Astral Eclipse. And there's another strong version of the build using Water Drop Erosion.

Yi Xian's next rotating game mode is 1v1 Hold 'Em mode, with six community cards, three hand cards (and three exchanges), and one betting round. The player going second gets a Spring Course Tea. Redeal after each battle instead of keeping cards.

This Tan Shuyan emoted "Finally I made it!" (which, in the original Chinese, is more clearly about assembling one's deck), followed by Awkward Tan Shuyan when she lost. She'd eaten a Divine Power Grass, too. In the next and final round, she tried moving Hexagram Formacide behind Five Thunders, which dodged Iron Bone, but again I survived with 9 HP and killed with Giant Tripod. (She ate another Divine Power Grass, too.) Anyway, I have all the achievements now.

I've been playing Yao Ling. The Destiny+3 Elixir feels so good. Guard Up Elixir is good against Xiao Bu Debuffs, the current most popular build. But I don't know if I can beat the Force build, I haven't faced it.

A few days ago, we discovered that matchmaking is now separate with China and International servers. This was disheartening to we international players who wanted to play with top players. Today, we discovered that your server is determined not by your Steam or mobile region, but by the language you select in the game!!! Simplified Chinese connects to China server. English and Traditional Chinese connect to International server.

The new school's Agility mechanic feels like a better chase. Unlike chase there's no drawback to doublestacking it, so you don't have to be nearly as fussy about card order. Just cram two Crane Agility early in the hand, then Crash Fist - Blink into Crash Fist - Continue into Crash Fist - Anything, and you've got an end game build with infinite chase that doesn't get blown out by card skips. Meanwhile Physique gives you something to do early in the game while you're waiting for your build to come together. Just put Xiao Bu's unique card in slot 1, or use whatever free level 3 cards Tu Kui generates passively, and then round 10 or 11 you'll have fifty free max HP and a solid third of your cards will give you powerful free bonuses. Both characters have weak Immortal Fates to offset their bonkers raw cards, but that just means you get to take powerful generic Immortal Fates. They seem real, real good!

I've been dabbling a bit after finding the game after a couple of streamers started showcasing it. I've done a few casual practice lobbies with the sword intent into unrestrained sword (yan xue/lu jianxin), and trying to make a homebrew force of water deck work with hua qinrui, which I had decent success with - 2nd place after ultimately getting demolished by wood thorn, after which I now severly doubt that it's good enough for real lobbies. The heptastar and duan xuan factions seem a little too daunting for now. Also I have so much trouble remembering all the chinese names and perks, and there are so many little interactions that are unclear to me, i.e. what influences health and max health permanently, how to manipulate absord/redraw for best effect, when to save redraws for what cultivation level, etc. The game as a whole seems to have a pretty significant skill ceiling, while still being pretty very luck dependant. I'm not sure if the variety of "good builds" is significant enough to keep me hooked in the long run, or if certain dominant strategies are too strong and repetitive. But for now, I keep coming back to it and I like watching streams and youtube videos of runs to learn stuff.
