What is AFL? This 5 minute video aimed at Americans should hopefully explain the basics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMZYZcoAcU0 <<<< watch this Footy, as it is known to the masses, is a fast-paced, full contact, 360 degree game which takes place on a truly massive (and non-standard sized) field of turf with 18 players on both teams chasing a leather ball around the place which can lead to some big hits and some impressive displays of skills. It is also one of the highest attended domestic sports league in the world with over 1 million paid up members (think seat/season pass holders) in Australia (Population 25 million) with many more spectators. https://i.imgur.com/OOSZEAH.gifv A brief history Australian football was devised around the Victorian gold rush years as something for cricketers to "keep fit" over summer, with the rules inspired by Marngrook, a game played by the indigenous peoples of Western Victoria. The first "organised" game of this new code was played out in 1858. As it existed then was basically dozens of players chasing the ball around a huge paddock, before the rules got refined to more suited to being played on cricket ovals. This lead to the Victorian Football Association (VFA) being formed soon after - matches were initially arranged on an ad-hoc basis, but soon took on a league structure. Around this time the game spread to the other states, having had the most impact in South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. The Victorian Football League (VFL) was established by eight Melbourne teams in 1897 as a breakaway of the VFA, which remained as the second-tier league in Victoria. The VFL remained a Victorian-based competition for most of its history, with SA and WA also hosting strong state leagues, as well as numerous suburban country leagues, however with the money and crowds concentrated in Melbourne, this caused a drift of the better players to the VFL through the 1960s and 70s. There was some state vs state competition, more on that below. Eventually the VFL began to expand interstate with the relocation of South Melbourne to Sydney in 1982, with subsequent expansions in 1987 to West Coast in Perth and the Brisbane Bears in Gold Coast (they moved into Brisbane a few years latter). While the main aim was to establish the national competition with an eye to TV rights, half the Victorian teams were flat broke so the license fees raised from the expenses were used to bail them out. With The Adelaide Crows in 1990, the VFL changed its name to the Australian Football League to reflect the national competition. The next new entrants were Fremantle in 1995, Port Adelaide in 1997, while Fitzroy "merged" with the Bears to become the Brisbane Lions. The current VFL is essentially a reserves competition for the east-coast AFL teams with a handful of standalone teams also competing. The SANFL and WAFL have more status as a standalone but still act as a development competition for the AFL teams in those states. In the early 2010s, the Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney Giants were added to the comp, so every mainland state now has at least two clubs, while Tasmania, which is football mad but also kind of poor, gets to watch a few games a year hosted by Hawthorn (in Launceston) and North Melbourne (in Hobart). The aim of the game is to win possession on the ball and kick it through the middle two set of big white sticks, which will earn you 6 points. If you kick it between the tall and the little post or the ball hits the goal post or is touched by any player going across the goal line it is worth 1 point. At the start of every quarter (20 minutes + time on, usually 30m all up) and after a goal has been scored the ball is brought to the middle for a ball up/centre bounce where two ruckmen will try to tap the ball to the advantage of their teammates, think of a basketball jump ball. The two main legal ways of passing the ball are via kicking and handballing, in any direction - there are no offside rules. If a player takes a mark (catch) at least 15m away from a kick which has not been touched by another player or has hit the ground an umpire awards a free kick, allowing the player to either play on or collect themselves for a few seconds to take an uninterrupted kick. Hand balling is punching the ball with a closed fist out of the palm of your other hand, players are not allowed to throw the ball and will have a free kick awarded against them if they do. It is legal to tackle an opponent with the ball between the shoulders and the knees. If successful and the opposing player was run down or had prior opportunity to dispose of the ball but didn't, a free kick is rewarded. Usually the crowd will advise the umpires that someone was holding the "BALLLLL". Otherwise if the ball gets tied up, the umpire will throw the ball up for t Oh yeah, you have to bounce (or ground) the ball every 15 meters if you're running, being an oval ball it does not bounce quite like a basketball. Yes, you can stand on peoples backs if you're legitimately going for the ball. https://i.imgur.com/EkmYHeX.mp4 The structure of the competition which runs from March to September/October is thus: 18 teams, 23 rounds of football (including a byes for each team), the top 8 teams get to play in the finals. The top 4 teams on the ladder get a double chance to stay in if they lose in the first week, and everyone else does elimination finals from the get go. The final 2 teams play in the Grand Final for the Premiership held in the last weekend of September or the first weekend of October depending which week the season starts.  https://i.imgur.com/HQrI0gU.mp4 AFLW The first season of the national women's competition kicked off in 2017 with 8 teams which are all aligned with the existing men's teams (see below). 2022 was unique for having two AFLW seasons, one in the traditional summer slot, and a second later in the year. It’s understood that seasons will commence around August from 2023 onwards. Information on the 2023 season is pretty sparse to date but there’s a placeholder below for when it becomes available https://i.imgur.com/RgY4KCz.mp4 Any given Sunday The AFL actively pursues a policy of equalisation so that every club can be reasonably expected to compete for a premiership within a reasonable period. This is closer to the NFL system and the “any given Sunday” principle, than for example the English Premier League where only a handful of clubs are reasonably expected to fill the top end of the rankings. The below table attempts to summarise the financial position of the clubs (going from 2019 as a pre-COVID baseline).  There are several levers to this equalisation policy. The majority of players are introduced to the league through a national draft. Clubs take picks in reverse ladder order from the previous year. Clubs are able to trade picks for other picks or players, and are able to trade future year picks as well. The AFL is subject to a salary cap for player payments. This is something of a rolling cap, as clubs are able to over or underspend in a given year, if this is accounted for in subsequent years. Player contracts are frequently back-ended or front-ended, rather than paid evenly across their length to assist with salary cap management. Clubs are also subject to a “soft cap” on football department spending. This covers the amount spent on coaching staff, medical, wellbeing, and support staff. Any amount a club spends above a cap set by the AFL is subject to an additional “tax”, paid into an equalisation fund run by the AFL and distributed between clubs. This cap intends to level the playing field between the differences in financial power between clubs. Overall the equalisation policy has been successful. In the 26 years from 1995-2022, 14 different teams have won premierships, and all but one team (Gold Coast) has qualified for a grand final. In the past 15 years Sydney, Geelong, the Bulldogs, Richmond, and Melbourne all broke premiership droughts of between 30 and 70 years. AFL Season 2022 storylines Finally…(pt.1)  Geelong have a serious claim to the best club of the century so far. They won premierships in 2007, 2009, and 2011. 2011 was the debut coaching season for their current coach Chris Scott. Coming into 2022 the Cats under Scott had a W/L of 169 Wins, 2 draws, and 65 losses in the regular season, a ridiculous run over the course of a decade. The main criticism was this didn’t translate to premiership success, with a 10W/15L record post-season. For the last decade, the end of each season has heralded calls of the Cats being too old and finally ready to fall off a cliff the following season. Despite proving false every year so far, these calls were as loud as ever coming into 2022 due to the Cats bowing out of the finals being thrashed by the eventual premiers. In 2022 the team and coach answered their critics emphatically, putting together a dominant season, a close win in week one of finals, and then a preliminary and grand final where they never allowed their opponents to fire a shot. This was redemption not only for Scott, but for star player Patrick Dangerfield who has won every accolade possible across his career except a premiership medal. The grand final also proved the swan-song to long-time captain Joel Selwood Deenasty?  Melbourne finished 2021 in emphatic form, dominating the finals series like few teams in recent history to win their first flag since 1964. With a young list anything seemed possible. They won their first 10 matches without ever seeming to get out of second gear. An injury to structurally important forward Tom McDonald and a full-on brawl between teammates that saw them banned from one of the city’s top-end restaurants didn’t bode well mid-year. After their 10-0 start they lost the next three in a row. Banking early wins kept them at the pointy end of the ladder throughout, but apart from a win in the final round against Brisbane they never looked like a top-tier threat. They ultimately got sent out of the finals in straight sets, an embarrassing and wasteful end to the year given the expectations on them at the start. #Buddy1000  (this photo is _during_ the game) Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin is the closest thing the AFL has to a LeBron. He’s just built different. Round two this year saw Buddy become just the 6th player in VFL/AFL history to kick 1000 career goals, and unless something drastically changes he’ll be the last. As tradition demanded, and the league implicitly condoned, a full pitch invasion ensued. Security was pretty lax, but fortunately everyone was in good spirits. The match took a good half-hour to resume, with a couple of the players having to exit the stadium completely and come back through the gates, being unable to reach the change rooms. I guess that’s why they call them the Blues https://i.imgur.com/QeyHe1H.mp4 Historically one of the competition’s powerhouses (and if you don’t know, they’ll tell you), the Blues have been pretty bad for most of this century. A solid win against GWS in round 19 left them likely needing only one win from their last three games. The next week they slipped on a banana peel against Adelaide, who were never in contention for finals this season. If you thought that was bad, well then… The following week’s match against Melbourne was a see-saw affair. Carlton got the better of it in the last quarter, and going two goals up 29 minutes into the last quarter it looked like Carlton had locked in finals. Jake Melksham then took his fourth contested mark for the game (previous PB was 2) in the goalsquare against three defenders and slotted his fourth goal. With 20 seconds remaining livewire Kysaiah Pickett kicked a goal to put the Demons in front, and meaning Carlton would need to find a win in the last round against their arch-enemy Collingwood, who despite finishing 2021 2nd last were on absolute fire. Collingwood controlled the first half, but Carlton put all doubters to rest in the third quarter. Eight goals to One saw the Blues enter the last thirty minutes with a four-goal lead to ensure a finals appearance. No prizes for guessing how that turned out. Collingwood scored 5 goals 1 behind, to Carlton’s 6 behinds, to win by a single point and with that the Blues hopes were dashed once again. They can’t keep getting away with it…  If you flip a coin enough times, you’re going to get 100 heads in a row. That’s my explanation for Collingwood’s 2022 season and I’m sticking to it. Noone had much expectation of Collingwood coming into the year after a dismal year, ultimately sacking club legend Nathan Buckley as coach and doing something very un-Collingwood in bringing in a new coach that was neither an ex-Magpies player or an already established super coach. Then from about the half-way mark they started doing something else very un-Collingwood, and something far far worse. They started winning close games. R11: 4 pts R12: 4 pts R15: 11 pts R16: 5 pts R17: 7 pts R18: 5 pts R19: 4 pts R20: 6 pts R21: 7 pts R23: 1 pt This was honestly ludicrous, and a complete and utter statistical aberration across the entire history of the sport, and yet they just kept doing it. Their finals campaign consisted of a 6 point loss, a 20 point win, and a 1 point loss falling agonisingly short of a completely unforeseen grand final berth. But I don’t think any Magpies fan could say they didn’t get their money’s worth out of the season. AFLW Season 2022a and 2022b storylines Trifect-caw  Adelaide won the inaugural premiership in 2017, a second in 2019, and being runners up in 2021. They’ve been annoyingly good. The competition’s star player, basketball star turned AFLW legend Erin Phillips, has strong ties to the Crows cross-town rival Port Adelaide through her father. With Port coming into the competition in the next season, many speculated this would be her last season with the Crows. Ultimately that speculation proved correct, with Erin Phillips joining Port as their inaugural captain for 2022b/Season 7. Before leaving she helped the Crows win a third flag by beating Melbourne, with the 29-16 scoreline not accurately representing Adelaide’s dominance. This win cemented them as the clear dominant team of the inaugural phase of the AFLW. Finally…(pt.2)  Melbourne, along with the Western Bulldogs, were one of the driving forces behind the AFLW (Women’s Australian Football itself has a much longer and richer history), with the two clubs holding exhibition matches from 2013-2016. Melbourne’s captain ever since the first exhibition match has been Daisy Pearce, a dominant player in the state league. She’s never been the absolute best player in the AFLW, but has been an elite talent, one of the game’s strongest ambassadors, and clearly an inspirational leader for her teammates. Across the competition’s history, Melbourne have always been one of the better teams, but never good enough in any one season. Across the regular season, Melbourne and Brisbane were well ahead of their competition, each boasting a 9-1 record and a points for/points against ratio above 280%. Brisbane got the better of Melbourne when they faced each other, but Melbourne got revenge in a low-scoring grand final. As well as what might prove to be the final chapter of Daisy’s playing career, high-profile player Tayla Harris finally tasted glory for the first time in her fourth grand final across three flags. The Teams: ADELAIDE CROWS First AFL season: 1991 Premierships: 2 - 1997, 1998 Their most recent peak was 2017 when they made the grand final, although it's arguable if they turned up. Since then they've middling to bad, and have gone through a review of their operations. Seem to be continually hamstrung by a farcically incompetent administration when logically they should be something of a powerhouse.  BRISBANE LIONS First AFL season: 1997 (merger of Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears) Premierships: 3 - 2001, 2002, 2003 (8 as Fitzroy - 1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916, 1922, 1944) Answered some critics with an improved finals performance, including disposing of reigning premiers Melbourne. Exciting recruits should improve them on the field, but their coach Chris Fagan is still under the cloud of an extremely disturbing racism and player welfare scandal from his time at Hawthorn with Alistair Clarkson.  CARLTON BLUES First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 16 - 1906, 1907, 1908, 1914, 1915, 1938, 1945, 1947, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1987, 1995 Anyone that feels sorry for Carlton last year clearly isn’t old enough to remember what they’re like when they win.  COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 15 - 1902, 1903, 1910, 1917, 1919, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1935, 1936, 1953, 1958, 1990, 2010 Look to have nailed their coaching appointment with Craig McRae, their 2022 season came out of nowhere and left them within 1 point of playing in a grand final. I think most expect them to come back to earth a bit this year, but gently caress me if Daicos isn’t one of the best first year players I’ve ever seen.  ESSENDON BOMBERS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 16 - 1897, 1901, 1911, 1912, 1923, 1924, 1942, 1946, 1949, 1950, 1962, 1965, 1984, 1985, 1993, 2000 C is for Cats is for Chris Scott B is for Bombers is for Brad Scott Appointed a religious nutjob as CEO, sacked him, and was sued by him in the space of like a week.  FREMANTLE DOCKERS First AFL season: 1995 Premierships: none Seem to be building very nicely but they’re kind of a long way away and the smaller of the two perth clubs.  GEELONG CATS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 10 - 1925, 1931, 1937, 1951, 1952, 1963, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2022 Chris Scott got his second premiership. It’s said after every strong grand final performance but there aren’t a lot of obvious gaps in this list and they should be right at the top once again.  GOLD COAST SUNS First AFL season: 2011 Premierships: none Irrelevant until proven otherwise.  GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY (GWS) GIANTS First AFL season: 2012 Premierships: none gently caress Toby Greene.  HAWTHORN HAWKS First AFL season: 1925 Premierships: 13 - 1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015 Eight wins last year seemed a pretty good return for them, but somewhat hard to get a read. Sam Mitchell is by all accounts a seriously good coach, and Hawthorn have the resources to back it up so while they’re not an immediate threat there’s a bit of a Jaws 2 feel to them.  MELBOURNE DEMONS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 13 - 1900, 1926, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1948, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1964, 2021 Forward line is still a huge weakness and for some reason recruited another big name ruckman despite already being led by Max Gawn. Who knows, they have the talent to do anything as shown in 2021 but they are still Melbourne.  NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS First VFL season: 1925 Premierships: 4 - 1975, 1977, 1996, 1999 The less said the better and that goes double for the fuckwit coach.  PORT ADELAIDE POWER First AFL season: 1997 Premierships: 1 – 2004 Port Adelaide like to pretend that their flags in a second-rate state-league competition that now functions only as a development territory mean something. Looked to be one of the all time hilarious seasons with a 0-5 start before they recovered to be deeply mediocre.  RICHMOND TIGERS First VFL season: 1908 Premierships: 12 - 1920, 1921, 1932, 1934, 1943, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1974, 1980, 2017, 2019,2020 Another old-skool team that were functionally useless for decades, but suddenly they've won 2 flags in the last 3 seasons, their numerous deranged fans have something positive to be obnoxious about, and it's scary. They had a bit of a run with injury in 2021 that never saw them move out of second gear. 2022 went a bit better, and they lost their only final by 2 points. Recruited well and will likely threaten again.  ST KILDA SAINTS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 1 – 1966 The Saints own the longest premiership drought in the league. From the outside it feels like they’ve overrated their list a few times recently, bringing in players to top up for contention prematurely. After sacking their coach they put their old ex-coach Ross Lyon back in the job. A brave move given they know just how much criticism they’ll cop if it doesn’t work out. Star young forward Max King suffered a bad shoulder injury at training and will miss a big chunk of the season in a really cruel blow to the Saints and the last thing they need.  SYDNEY SWANS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club (as South Melbourne) Premierships: 5 - 1909, 1918, 1933, 2005, 2012 Were technically present at the grand final, and a really good season overall. They’ve got a ridiculously good core of young players and should comfortably make finals again.  WEST COAST EAGLES First VFL season: 1987 Premierships: 4 - 1992, 1994, 2006, 2018 Last year predicted West Coast feel like they’re ready to fall in a heap, and that proved true beyond my expectations. Cruelled by injury and COVID, the Eagles actually had to field state-league players as a contingency early in the year. It’s an anomaly for West Coast to be really bad, and while they’re unlikely to have as bad a start to the year again there’s not a lot of reason to expect them to shoot back up the ladder in the short term.  WESTERN BULLDOGS First VFL season: 1925 Premierships: 2 – 1954, 2016 Scraped into the finals due to Carlton’s…Carltoning, Lost in the first week of finals, huge talent that has arguably underperformed under coach Luke Beveridge since their premiership year. Nice work on the OP  After three footy seasons last year I'm still recovering from footy overload, but starting to get the itch again. Of course the Crows men will be poo poo this year so really not much to look forward until Real Football starts later in the year.

I know from following them still on Facebook that the USAFL (the governing body for the US and connected to the mothership in Australia) would post a weekly “what’s on TV” listing the past few seasons. As I’m not in Australia nor always checking Australian news sources I didn’t see the Max King injury news, that’s going to loving hurt. At times last year King was close to reaching that absolutely unplayable full forward level, marking anything within range and getting bags of goals regularly. Through June and July were a couple games where he went supernova in the 3rd quarter. The overview of teams forgot the weirdest thing about the return of Ross the Boss, and that’s former head coach Brett Ratten getting an extension to his contract midway through last season before an “internal football review” concluded just after the (admittedly very disappointing) end of the season suggested Ratts instead be given his marching orders. Not the most bizarre coaching situation as of now but still.

The only logic I can apply is Big E played American football in university and the mascot is the Hawkeyes, but similarly he could’ve chosen Richmond because of the colors. It is a mystery, but at least it’s not Collingwood.

Shuey back as Captain with McGovern & Barrass as Vices. NicNat steps down as vice, must be getting toward the end for him now. Not long to preseason! Gonna go with us finishing somewhere between 12th-Spoon, probably on the upper end as we still have a fairly good list even with the big outs. Hoping everyone gets an uninterrupted pre-season, though I have concerns about the Optus surface still.

Not that anyone asked for my opinion, but I wish Americans embraced this brand of footy the way they have embraced Rugby, just because I like this sport better and feel like it's easier to adapt into a scaled down casual version. 1. Having a "kick" with an AFL ball is a lot more fun that passing a rugby football back and forth (imo) and you don't need giant hands to get good at it, unlike throwing an American football. 2. You could easily adapt this sport to play with flags or 2-hand touch, unlike Rugby where contact is 100% necessary 3. This game is as easily adaptable to different field sizes, roster sizes, and different skill levels similar to other football sports (when I lived in Atlanta, there was a club that ran 7v7 matches on weekends on small fields. The Aussies' could score from mid-field but that was part of the fun). 4. Since this brand of football is kind of a mix of sports already familiar to Americans, you'd think it'd be a lot easier to learn than rugby (as demonstrated in the GIF in the OP) Anyway, go Power. Try not to embarrass yourselves?

Yep, that was one of the reasons I thought the pre-pandemic preseason AFL-X stuff was so stupid - if you want a game for smaller rectangular fields (eg soccer/rugby pitches), just adapt the rules teams around the world use to play footy 9-a-sides, and codify that (since most all of the groups internationally are connected to the AFL in some way - eg various countries in the region as part of AFL Asia, and both having some tie to AFL House in Melbourne). Instead they went with the gimmicks
