Are the Saints stuck on the mediocrity treadmill? Since winning the wooden spoon in 2014, they have an average position of 10th. Ross Lyon and senior players like Steele are enough to keep them off the bottom, but not enough to be good. In 2021 I said to my Saints-supporting mates that they should get worse for a season or two. Seb Ross and Billings were both free agents, one of them should've been let go for the chance at first or second round compensation. Wanganeen-Milera, Owens and Windhager is a great return for their 2021 draft. Phillipou and Caminiti from 2022 also look good, but the three other players drafted that year haven't debuted. Maybe they are injured or aren't good enough, or maybe average senior players like Jones, Butler and Bonner are keeping them out?

Maybe they just had a bad night against an opponent they underestimated. They came within a point of a memorable comeback against the unbeaten Giants. I can't see the Blues getting anywhere near that close this week with all these injuries.

I reckon it was HTB and Draper should have been penalised, but it was one of of twenty pisspoor decisions during that match that would have directly affected a score or opportunity, and I hated Channel7 last night going on and on about that decision without looking at any of the others. gently caress em all.

The way HTB was adjudicated throughout the game was absolutely baffling, and went against both sides at various points. Player were regularly pinged for HTB when they had absolutely no chance to get rid of it. And then the opposite occurred at the end. Mind you, there were at least half a dozen frees which could have been given in those last few minutes (again, going both ways) that just weren't paid. I hate this bullshit about umpires putting the whistle away because it's near the end of the game, or it's a grand final, or whatever. If it's good enough to pay normally, then pay it.
