check out The Night Monitor for extended spooky vibes. a newish project by neil scrivin with a pretty big back catalog at this point. they use real world paranormal events as inspiration. the first album This House Is Haunted is a good place to start, legitimately spooky stuff.

Nice, I like how direct this one is. It's definitely going for "scary" first and foremost instead of something like existential dread or "let's explore the dark side of humanity" or some such.

Not that it took much to freak out Brian Wilson, but one of the reasons Smile was scrapped is because he thought Fire was actually causing fires.

When Wilson revisited Smile 40 years later, he reworked the track. It's not as siren-y or uneasy as the original.

While I wouldn't really define UNKLE's "Safe In Mind" as scary, it is very menacing.

If you close your eyes and listen to the beginning, it sounds like the music for a trap-filled murder dungeon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYJaEaQlxJk

I discovered Tobacco a few years ago while watching Eric Warheim-made videos and the video for "Streaker" fits the definition. This video is a carousel from "Silent Hill" jerking and lurching and covered in gore. While broken speakers emit odd noises, the carousel turns slowly. EVERYTHING has an oily sheen. There are multiple gross naked people having sex on it.

I really feel that Eric should have directed horror films, as the guy has an eye for disturbing imagery.

The best way that I would describe Tobacco's music is "Music for Movie Serial Killers" or "let's watch this black spine VHS with no label and could possibly be a snuff film". NSFW for nudity!

i mean, the piece was used in a bunch of early horror movies because it's dramatic and gothic sounding and came to be associated with those things in 20th century pop culture, but i don't think it was written to be "scary" by bach, nor was it really considered "scary" music by most of its audience until that association developed, much later on, but which is now so cliche as to become corny and thus no longer scary. so yes there was a relatively brief period of the piece's history when it was associated generally with dark themes, but i dont think the piece itself really scared many people. although i was certainly very nervous when i performed it in front of my whole school in 6th grade!

manson is a scary figure because of the murders he committed, not because of the music he wrote, which isn't particularly scary at all. if you heard one of those tunes without knowing who wrote it, nothing about it would scare you.

also, bach wasn't a murderer so im confused about what kind of point you are trying to make here

Tran-Siberian Orchestra's Carol of the Bells has always unnerved the hell out of me. I used to listen to the radio to fall asleep as a kid so the first time I ever heard this song was dead in the middle of the night. I was probably 8? I don't know. Even as an adult listening to it fills me with dread.

Mike Patton's always been good for this kind of stuff, whether his voice or his writing; Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz by Mr. Bungle, and Delirium Cordia by Fantomas show off entirely different angles. Delirium Cordia was his attempt to replicate the feeling of surgery without anesthesia in musical format.

Ethel Cain's Ptolemea is pretty loving scary, even divorced from the context of the rest of the album, which tells the story of a girl running away from her conservative, baptist family and her eventual kidnapping and murder by her boyfriend. Ptolemea is basically the song of her murder It is a song that benefits strongly from headphones but volume warning for 4:00

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VmFiiDedU0

Preacher's Daughter is an incredible album but it deals with some pretty heavy stuff so content warning for familial abuse, murder and uh, cannibalism.

edit:WHOOPS someone already posted Ptolemea one page back :downs: should have done more the skim the previous pages. Anyway, take this as another recommendation for Preacher's Daughter if you're still on the fence
