Welcome to the New Cricket thread, I will be your host and guide through this wonderful game.

I am going to do this in stages so that you don’t get too overwhelmed as cricket is both an incredibly simple and complex game.

What is cricket?

It’s a game of bat and ball played by 11 people per side, with the fielding side having all 11 players on the pitch while the batting side only have 2.

How do you win?

The win state depends on the format.
Test cicket it is to get 10 of the opposition batters out (as there must always be a batting pair) twice AND score the most runs.
In limited overs it is to score the most runs in 50 or 20 overs.

Who plays it?

Depends on the format.
Test cricket is played by about 12 countries.
50 overs cricket is played by about 100 countries but in reality only 20 play to a high level.
20 overs cricket is played by about 150 countries but, again, in reality only 20 play to a high level.

What format should I start with?

20 over cricket should be your starting point (many other posters will disagree, but I am the OP so there). It’s the quickest format with games only taking 3 hours to complete, so slightly longer than a football or rugby match and about as long as the American sports.

It is the most exciting as you get to see big hits, big outs, and big mistakes. The language tends to be simpler (oh god does cricket love its jargon) and the presentation is better. It will be in a competition that is over in the space of couple of months meaning you can get drawn in especially as the teams are usually city based which helps build sense of tribal loyalty.

How do I watch it?

England – Sky Sports or BT Sports (both need a subscription) with highlights on Channel 5 or the BBC (free to air).
Australia – Channel 7 free to air (Tests and BBL only) and Fox Sports/Kayo (the only way to watch white ball games, as well as Shield games)
India – Star Sports

Formats

Test and First-Class aka Red Ball

Top level Event: The World Test Championship

Current Champions: New Zealand

Official Website

Test cricket is best cricket. Anyone who disagrees can gently caress right off. Go start your own thread.

This is the original format of cricket, back when it wasn’t called a format it was simply cricket. 2 countries (Tests are only played at international level) play each other over 5 days (even longer back in the day) in a contest of stamina – physical, mental, and emotional. A good batsman is one that can spend hours defending only occasionally trying to score runs. A good bowler is one that can send down the same delivery time after time after time. A good fielder is one that can spend days doing nothing while being alert enough to make a match turning catch in the flash of an eye. A lot of the time this will result in the draw but that is changing due to the impact of the shorter formats.

Test cricket is all about tension and stress and pressure. It is glorious.

At a national level Test cricket is called First Class (FC) cricket and is played by regions or cities. It tends to be played over 4 days instead of 5. Each FC competition is formatted slightly differently and with slightly different point scoring systems. The players who do well in FC tend to be the ones that are called up to play for the Test side but that is also changing.

These formats are collectively called Red Ball cricket as the ball is red.

50 over – ODIs and List A aka White Ball

Top level Event: Cricket World Cup

Current Champions: England

Official website

50 overs cricket is the original short format cricket. I is designed to be played in one day, thus One Day International (ODI). The idea being that you take the exciting part of an innings, the middle overs, to get the crowds in.

In the beginning it was exactly that with scoring rates being slightly above what you got in tests along with the bowling being very similar to test bowling. However, that has all changed and ODIs are now all about aggressive batting and bowling, you see a lot more teams choosing to bat second, and a lot of data analytics going on. It is now a very modern sport but is beginning to lose its relevance to T20. It is incredibly popular in the sub-continent and countries new to the sport.

At a national level 50 over games are called List A matches with every nation having a slightly different setup but it is usually a cup or league/knock out stage arrangement. The teams that play usually are the same that play First Class Cricket.

As the game is played with a white ball it is called white ball cricket.

20 Over – T20Is and T20 aka The Shortest Format

Top Level Event: T20 World Cup

Current Champions: England

Official website

T20 cricket is the new kid on the block, having first been played 20 years ago. The most divisive of formats. Some love it (including me), others hate it. It will save the game or destroy it utterly.

It has become an extremely aggressive format, with run rates of 10 an over becoming the norm (for context Test cricket is usually 3.5 runs and ODIs about 7). When it first started it was a short ODI and was played as such with a lot of standard shots from the batters and deliveries from the bowlers. However, this all changed with the West Indian team and their analysists threw all the old ideas out the window and single handily transformed the sport it is today. The IPL took those ideas and ran with them.

The format forms the great schism our time as the shots the batters play, the way the bowlers bowl and fields are set are complete anathema to how Tests are played. The format is the cutting edge of what cricket can be having completely changed the way ODIs are played and is beginning to transform Tests.

Primarily played at the national level with the IPL being the big one but there are more and more pretenders to the throne popping up all over the place. These are usually city based but you still have the English being stick in the muds and having their competition based on the counties. This has formed a sort of tour where the best in the world bounce from one competition to the next.

Full Member Countries
100+ teams play cricket but only 12 play Tests and thus given the special title of Full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC), crickets version of FIFA but even among this small cohort there are 2 tiers. The big 3 consisting of Australia, England, and India, with the rest only there for the big 3 to play when the big 3 are not playing each other.

Australia
Cricket is probably the top sport in Australia being tied with Aussie Rules Football. If you were to design the perfect place to play cricket it would probably be Australia. They have been at the very top of test cricket from the very start, literally. The first test was played between England and Australia and their rivalry, known as The Ashes, is the highlight of the Test calendar across the cricketing world. They are the last “Great” team, completely dominating the sport for the best part of 20 years. While not as good now they are still the gold standard for all other teams, being the default best team in the world, and will usually be in the running for whatever world cup is on.

First Class competition – The Sheffield Shield
50 over competition – The Marsh Cup
T20 competition – The Big Bash League

England
Cricket is an English sport exported across the globe via The British Empire, a decision they regret to this date. Everyone wants to play, and beat, England for being the old colonial master (and you actually have a fighting chance of breaking even hosting a Test match!) England seem like they should be a really good cricket team but for the most part they are poo poo. They do occasionally have the best team but only for a moment before it implodes, however they have worked out how to be outstandingly amazing at white ball cricket, a fact that makes everyone feel a bit weird especially the England fans. Massively Classist and Racist, they have just lost most of their corporate sponsorship on the eve of what is expected to be a damning report into said racism.

First Class competition – County Championship
50 over competition – The Royal London One-Day Cup
T20 competition – Vitality Blast/The Hundred

India
The financial big boys of world cricket. As in over 50% of the money in cricket is generated by India, which is no surprise as they are a country of a billion people with a booming economy, and boy do they know how to throw their weight around. Unless a motion by the world governing body directly benefits them it is unlikely to pass. For most of their history they have been a middling cricket team, good at home, or in Asia, but poo poo everywhere else. That has recently changed thanks to the aforementioned booming economy which means that their team is the probably the best in the world in all formats, they just have a serious case of hubris and gently caress-up at the last hurdle. The bedrock of their growth and power is the IPL, a national competition that is the equal of all other international cricket events.

First Class competition – The Ranji Trophy
50 over competition – Vijay Hazare Trophy
T20 competition – The IPL

The platonic ideal of a cricket team. A lovely group of guys who play really good cricket across all formats. The only people who don’t like them are the Aussies but that’s more out of professional courtesy. I don’t think anyone else in the world could get away with calling themselves The All Whites. They have always been pretty good but not amazing until recently when they have been massively punching above their weight. For example, they are the reigning World Test Champions. They have also reached the finals of the last ODI world cup, and final and semi of the last two T20 world cups. If you don’t have a Test team to support, you support New Zealand.

First Class competition – Plunket Shield
50 over competition – The Ford Trophy
T20 competition – Super Smash

Pakistan
Where do you start with Pakistan? Simultaneously the best and worst team in the world, sometimes in the same match, sometimes in the same over! They have always been there or there abouts in world cricket having won plenty of world cups and produced some of the greatest players the game has ever seen. They have also been embroiled in a lot of dodgy stuff on and off the pitch such as messing with the ball or match fixing. Only recently started playing in Pakistan again after some fall-out from the USA’s war on terror. They are also hampered by India who tries to gently caress them over whenever they get the chance.

First Class competition – Quaid-e-Azam Trophy
50 over competition – Pakistan Cup
T20 competition – Pakistan Super League

South Africa
The third oldest Test playing nation and probably the most hated. They have always produced very high-quality teams across all the formats that usually choke at the most hilarious of moments. But what really defines them is racism and their inability to deal with it. This is ultimately a societal problem but the administrators of the game have done themselves no favours in properly integrating the black population into the team. Have recently started a very good T20 league.

First Class competition – CSA 4-Day Series
50 over competition – CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One
T20 competition – SA20

West Indies
The last but one “Great” team. And I mean seriously great. Historically great. The greatest sports team to have ever played sport great. No, honestly. The West Indies team of the 70s and 80s went 15 years without losing a series, no-one has come close to that in any other sport. However they have fallen on hard times due to loving useless administrators and the islands of the West Indies having middling economies. The best West Indian players are in demand across the globe, playing in every T20 league going. They utterly revolutionised T20 cricket and if you wanted to win your league you needed at least one West Indian in your team. They should be dominating T20 world cups but they keep picking the old guard.

First Class competition – West Indies 4-Day Championship
50 over competition – Super50 Cup
T20 competition – Caribbean Premier League

Sri Lanka
A relative new comer to the world of Test cricket, they joined in 1982, that really brought something new to the table. During the 1990s and 2000s they had some of the best players out there who could go toe-to-toe with the best in the world in all formats. Their greatest ever bowler is the greatest ever bowler in Test cricket. But much like the other non-big 3 teams they have fallen on hard times and haven’t really had much success of late, however their T20 side is coming together nicely and might do something over the next few years.

First Class competition – National Super League 4-Day Tournament/ Major League Tournament
50 over competition – National Super League Limited Over Tournament
T20 competition – Lanka Premier League

Zimbabwe
I’m going to be honest with you and say I don’t really know much about Zimbabwe. They have produced some cracking players that are equal to the worlds best but that’s about it. No-one plays them much anymore, I don’t know anything about their T20 players. They are an example of the half-hearted attempt to make cricket a world game when really the ICC wants to keep it a closed shop.

First Class competition – Logan Cup
50 over competition – Pro50 Championship
T20 competition – N/A

Bangladesh
Bangladesh are awesome. Unlike Zimbabwe The Bangers have been well integrated into world cricket and have started punching their weight at Test level. This is due to the Asian nations having formed excellent links with each other and offering a lot of mutual support. Like most smaller nations they have a strong short format team with a good selection of world class players. Their only real issue is that they don’t play enough Tests but that is game wide problem. If you don’t want to support NZ, support these guys instead.

First Class competition – Bangladesh Cricket League/National Cricket League
50 over competition – Bangladesh Cricket League One-Day
T20 competition – Bangladesh Premier League

Ireland
Oh Ireland, what could have been. About 10 years ago they had a what would have been a pretty good Test team, but due to politics they just couldn’t get themselves elevated to Full Member status and if it wasn’t for Afghanistan’s elevation theirs would never have happened. In the 5 years they have been full members they have played 3 times, the last time was almost 4 years ago! Pretty good short format team who have given some of the big teams, England mainly, a hard time at world cups.

First Class competition – N/A (I am genuinely gobsmacked at this fact)
50 over competition – Cricket Ireland Inter-Provincial Limited Over Cup
T20 competition – Cricket Ireland Inter-Provincial Twenty20 Trophy

Afghanistan
Probably the most meteoric rise from never played to full member ever. I have mentioned the Asian network before and Afghanistan can be considered its greatest success. A short format team full of the most unorthodox and fearless players you have ever seen who are beginning to make their mark at Test level (they actually get to play them). Their best spinner is the best T20 bowler in the world and they are team that is going places (as long as that isn’t their home stadium).

First Class competition – N/A
50 over competition – N/A
T20 competition – N/A

An Idiot’s Guide to the 2023 Tata Dream 11 IPL Brought To You By CEAT, PayTM and Cred

On March 31st the IPL starts. The Indian Premier League is the largest and most lucrative cement and tire sponsorship opportunity in global cricket. It also happens to feature the best T20 players in the world, assuming they’re not Pakistani nationals.

Once you get past the part where literally every single event and moment is monetized to maximize revenue and enhance the stature of Indian oligarchs, the BCCI and in turn, the BJP, it's actually a pretty good time. Some of the teams have really cool rosters and the overall quality and competitiveness is quite high.

IPL rosters are constructed through an annual auction. Between seasons, teams can retain players or release them back into the pool. There is a hard salary cap and retained players have a fixed salary. Every few years there is a super auction where teams can only retain 4 players (at which point they agree to new deals). 2021 was the most recent super auction. As you’d expect, the good teams typically keep their core together while those who are struggling have a great deal of turnover.

Teams can only play 4 non-Indian players at a time, although they can have more rostered. These international spots, more often than not, get reserved for talents that are not readily available in India. As a result, you won't see many international opening batters or finger spinners. Instead, (and with a few exceptions) the highest paid international seem to be allrounders, especially allround fast bowlers..

I’ve only watched it for 3 years but since then teams are investing more in fast bowling and power hitting allrounders. Even in 2019, teams seemed to bat slower and were happy defending 160. Now everyone is trying for 180+ and non-elite bowlers are getting demolished. That said, there are still a lot of old warhorses (KL Rahul, Kohli, Williamson, Rohit) who take up far too many balls batting at a strikerate of <130. Most people who cover the league understand that these “stars'' are less optimal (one might even say, bad) in their current role but the good people at Reliance Industries and CVC Capital don’t seem to mind.

All the managers are former players who get paid nice salaries to give bad team speeches and do interviews where they genuflect to the IPL and team owners. Some have argued that this is yet another form of soft power but please do not post this on r/cricket or mention it on the TV or you will be banned.

Here are the teams. When I first started watching I tried to be a “fan” of some of them but they are all sorta stupid and I found better things to do. I’d suggest just looking at the rosters and figure out who you want to see.

Mumbai Indians, “MI”

Captain: Rohit Sharma
Coach: Mark Boucher
Last Year: Despite being the most successful IPL team ever they were dreadful after loving up the auction. Rohit was exceptionally terrible but he’s been bad for like 4 years and no one seems to care.
This Year: Jofra Archer coming back will be huge but Bumrah missing the year cancels that out a bit. They spent a lot Cameron Green. Suryakumar Yadav’s as good as it gets at T20 batting and with Tim David and Dewalt Brevis they have an excellent middle order. Bowling seems weak enough that they might actually play Tendulkar’s son a few times.

Chennai Super Kings, “CSK”

Captain: MS Dhoni
Coach: MS Dhoni Stephen Fleming
Last Year: Similar to Mumbai, they’ve won a ton of titles but also finished with only 4 wins . They originally let Jadeja captain but after a bad start he got canned and Dhoni returned. Dhoni probably has two good scores a year but commentators will credit him for the sun rising in the morning.
This Year: They added Ben Stokes, which along with Moeen Ali and Jadeja gives them a great core of allrounders. Deepak Chahar is their only elite bowler and he’s inconsistent. Both Gaikwad and Conway could turn it on but they probably don’t have enough batting.

Royal Challengers Bangalore, “RCB”

Captain: Faf Du Plesis
Coach: Sanjay Bangar
Last Year: Like most years apparently, RCB finished in the top 4 and then failed to make the finals. They had good bowling (Harshal Patel and Hassranga in particular) but the batting was inconsistent and relied heavily on Glen Maxwell to bail them out when Kohli failed and failed.
This Year: At a certain point people might start asking questions if Kohli continues to suck but probably not. Faf still seems good and their fast bowling trio is excellent (Harshal, Siraj and Hazelwood). They’ll probably make it to the playoff then lose again.

Delhi Capitals, “DC”

Captain: David Warner
Coach: Ricky Ponting
Last Year: Despite being unplayable the year before, David Warner came in and formed one of the league’s premier opening pairs with the wonderfully thiccc and very underrated Prithvi Shaw. Their bowling was pretty good but their batting collapsed one too many times and they just barely missed the playoff.
This Year: Last year’s captain Rishabh Pant is out, although he hasn’t been too good for them over the past few years. They have excellent bowlers (Einrich Nokia, Ngidi, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav) but the batting is light after the openers.

Kolkata Knight Riders, “KRK”

Captain:Sheryas Iyer
Coach: Chanrakant Pandit
Last Year: They probably screwed up in keeping Venkatesh Iyer over Shubman Gill. Cummins being bad didn’t help and the batting was inconsistent. Despite being old, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell continued to be excellent. Narine especially has been so good for a while and is one of the few who can keep teams under 6 per over.
This Year: Narine and Russell probably have to get worse. When Russell is healthy he’s basically the perfect T20 player But he also plays franchise cricket 365 days a year so you never know how much he can bowl. Captain Sheryas Iyer might also miss time due to injury.

Rajasthan Royals, “RR”

Captain: Jos Buttler Sanju Samson
Coach: Kumar Sangakkara
Last Year: After being poo poo for a few years Rajasthan made the finals because Jos Buttler was unstoppable and their bowlers came up big. Aswin and Yuzi Chahal were fantastic and Jaiswal did well to keep up with Buttler.
This Year: Their batting should still be excellent and people hype up Riyan Parag. Their bowling remains strong and getting Jason Holder and Adam Zampa gives them even more options.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, “SRH”

Captain: Aiden Markram
Coach: Brian Lara
Last Year: After banishing David Warner for being unplayable in 2020 they basically carried the same dead weight in Kane Williamson. Losing Rashid Khan was bad but they found a potential gem in (very) fast bowler Umran Malik
This Year: They dropped Kane, gave Markram the captaincy and added Harry Brook. I have no idea if he’ll even play but I saw him do well on tv so why not. Marco Jansen and Washington Sundar are pretty good allrounders and Bhuveneshwar Kumar looks back in form. They could be good but I’ve only ever seen them suck.

Punjab Kings

Captain: Shikhar Dhawan
Coach: Trevor Bayliss
Last year: They sucked but almost made the playoffs because Arshdeep Singh bowled well and Shikhar Dhawan had a nice comeback year. Liam Livingston was also very clutch and saved a bunch of games.
This Year: Even with Singh and Rabada they probably still need one more good bowler. Adding Sam Curran will help but he’s sorta streaky. Will be interesting to see how Bairstow does after his injury as he was cranking them out before.

Gujarat Titans

Captain: Hardik Pandya
Coach: Ashish Nehra
Last Year: Gujarat was one of the two expansion teams that was added in 2021. Both turned out to be very good with Gujarat winning it all. They didn’t have the deepest batting but David Miller, Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya always seemed to come up big. Their bowling is excellent. Rashid Khan is on another level and most teams just play him off rather than risk losing all their wickets.
This Year: They have the same core but if some of their batters go cold it might be tricky. Miller is missing a few games so that could be the difference. Will be interesting if old guys like Wade and Saha can still be useful.

Lucknow Super Giants “LSG”

Captain: KL Rahul
Coach: Andy Flower
Last Year: Lucknow made the playoffs after excellent performances from de Kock and Ravi Bishnoi. Some will say KL Rahul was good too but he is actually terrible and only cares about winning the stupid orange hat you get for wasting time. Stoinis, Krunal Pandya and Holder made for a nice set of all rounders.
This Year: They have basically the same team but lost Holder and added Nicholas Pooran. He supposedly gives them more batting but he’s been poo poo for a few years now so I’m surprised people are still into it. Their bowling is strong and they have good all rounders but I hope they suck.

I’d go further: Test cricket is the greatest sport there is.

The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.

iirc there was a lightning strike nearby, so the players were told to lie down and reduce the risk

as for why the umpire is still standing .. i dunno? i guess since they're in charge you could call them a conductor....

I welcome our new thread and the guaranteed influxes of new posters who want to watch the greatest game of all, but, in Australia now the cricket is on Channel 7 free to air (Tests and BBL only) and Fox Sports/Kayo (the only way to watch white ball games, as well as Shield games, sometimes)

OP updated.

If anyone has more information about which broadcasters operate where I will add it to the OP.
