Which categories in 2022 had the lowest response rates? That's where I'd start looking. I know that like social media trash talk and best show I just go like "idfk", many of the "worst" categories I dislike outside of the bad officiating shame.

LobsterMobster posted:in terms of first place vote responses: Agreed, and Interview/Insult/Trash talk can probably be combined into a catch all "Best Hype"

Another idea I just had is that we could try to periodically have discussions throughout the year aimed toward creating a short list out of the existing nominations which can make things easier to review at the year's end. These can just happen whenever someone feels like starting the conversation - "ok it's April and we have 8 nominations for knockout of the year. Out of these I think these 5 are cool but probably won't win so lets highlight the 2 best ones and here are some gifs of them // well this one that you don't like is pretty rad and i found a gif // ok we'll keep it for now but lets try to limit it to 10 at year's end". Being on the "short list" could simply be bolding it in the post and adding a link - that alone could take a lot of the hassle out of choosing winners.

FOTY Volk vs Mak like there it is. Starting off hot. Here's the pitch someone made in the GDT: you might see a crazier fight this year, but you won't see a higher level one.

Upset of the year (do we still do that? If not, then coolest moment) and Submission of the Year UFC 285 Alexa Grasso sub Valentina Shevchenko By the way I want to stop for a moment and as a grappling nerd draw attention to the quality of Grasso's finish there - it wasn't "just an rnc" after a cool back take - it was a picture perfect chin-in RNC/chinlock and you can see her adjusting the technical details progressively as she gets the finish by altering the relative placement of her hands and head and by doing a crunch and twist finish, and by maintaining control through a grip fight. This might not seem like a big deal but elite fighters screw up these details and miss out on finishes all the time, and I know this because I'm obsessed with this particular version of the RNC within my own grappling and I watch for it.

We should start thinking about a quarterly review of nominations here for the end of April

Wow no nominations since July. https://dubz.cc/c/91238b Foul of the year. Referee/Official? incompetence to that doctor too. The ref himself handled it well, kinda. He didn't handle it actively badly though.

Knockout of the Year UFC 296 Josh Emmett ko Bryce Mitchell Bellator 295 Patchy Mix ko Raufeon Stots sub of the year Fight Night Holm v Bueno Silva - Mayra Bueno Silva ninja choke Tapology has lists to help jog your memory. Their actual rankings are stupid though so don't allow the tops of the lists to bias you. https://www.tapology.com/rankings/5061-2023-greatest-mma-submissions https://www.tapology.com/rankings/5060-2023-greatest-mma-knockouts https://www.tapology.com/rankings/5059-2023-mma-fights-of-the-year https://www.tapology.com/rankings/5058-2023-mma-fighter-of-the-year (especially stupid) It was cool when Ed Herman and Zac Cummings retired at the same time and then funny later when Guida faked out on that.
