Although I did like in e3 where Charlie told the wife about the lie detecting and in every scene afterwards you can tell that she's choosing her words very carefully to be technically true

Same with Episode 1 and Adrian Brody. Every time she asks him a question he would need to answer with a lie, he changes the subject or answers with a completely different statement that is the truth, but not actually an answer to the direct question, like when she asks “What was the bad news that Cliff called you with?” And he responds “Cliff calls me with bad news 50 times a day!”

Also, John Darnielle’s regret song was so absolutely on point, and the subtle jokes are just great, like when Al asks Ruby where she found Gavin and she sarcastically replies, “Juilliard” and ten minutes later Charlie is asking Gavin if he’s self taught and he says “nah, I went to Juilliard”

Because people who can play an instrument are a dime a dozen and people who can write hit songs that aren’t so obviously plagiarized are not

Like, people argue that the Beatles would have been just as big with Pete Best instead of Ringo Starr, but no one argues that if John Lennon had stayed in Hamburg instead of Stu Sutcliffe they would have been fine

And yes, the result is hand politics are horrible and brutal, because getting writing credits on a big hit is the difference between making a living playing music and “eh, it’s a living” playing music

And honestly episode 4 was a lot more entertaining having read Dave Grohl’s Storytellers because he was literally Gavin in his first professional band, and every scene in the show was underlined by how it came across as completely realistic based on his experiences.

7 was pretty fun. I feel like it would have been more compelling if they didn't went with him just going openly evil. Still decent confrontation at the end and this was one of the better alternative gotchas the show has been playing around with.

I thought they did a good job with oh he’s an evil poo poo, you’re supposed to hate him and sympathize with the murder followed by a sudden “okay now that you think he’s dead, see him from his mother’s view and suddenly he’s a lot more understandable and sympathetic and the murderer is just a privileged rear end” immediately followed by “oh gently caress no he was evil all along”

Yeah, I definitely feel like this show would be much improved with an extra hour to let the characters build and the plot breathe. Guzman and Notle were doing really neat stuff with their characters and it felt like we needed more time to just sit with them and let them and Charlie bounce off each other, and the plot and resolution felt super rushed.

But I'm still loving it, and an special lol at Sean Ono Lennon making a cameo as one of the guests

edit: though actually my big complaint was that the episode went on too long - it should've ended with the jump, not the aftermath

I dunno, I'm not American and I come from a country with strong unions and labour laws (even more true in the 80s) so maybe it's different and nobody actually cared.

I feel like you are in fact giving the average American cop way too much credit in how much they’re willing to bother investigating what is presented to them as and open-and-shut case.

Congrats on having not-poo poo cops who might be willing to press a boss for violating labor laws!

Spoilers for finale and first episode:

my wife and I watched the finale tonight, and she pointed out that Sterling Sr. said, “I told my son three things when I gave him the casino, the first two don’t matter, but the third is keep Hasp out”

In the first episode, Sterling Jr. makes a speech about when his father gave him the casino, his father told him three things: keep the floors clean, keep the Russian guy happy, and the third doesn’t matter.

Just an amazing call back. And just amazing acting and writing throughout, I think the highlight moment for me was the FBI guy coming in to arrest Cliff and starting off formal and tense and immediately dropping it with, “whoa wait dude, your eye is hosed up, do we need to take you to the hospital?”

Can’t wait for season 2.

She seemed surprised that she had it back on, like she did it accidentally or just without thinking about it.

Yeah, it seemed to me like it suddenly stunned her and disappointed her that suddenly it was there again.

Actually, was there even an instance of her bullshit detection in this episode? I can't recall one.

Pure speculation but it really felt like when her sister said, “y’know what? We’re fine. We’re doing fine.” that Charlie was going to call bullshit. I wouldn’t be surprised if her family is the only place she’s learned to hold back from. But this is just pure speculation.
