the idea is that different interest groups (or classes) and institutions in society want different things and try to pull the way things are done (law, economy, politics) in different ways (some of which may be antagonistic and mutually contradictory) the end result (how things actually work) is due to the various concessions, compromises and decisions made based on which institutions and classes hold how much power. this can often be a mess of inconsistencies and contradictions, as anyone who observes the american political system can instantly get
