There was a GHOST here.
It's gone now.
I'm really interested in true crime but yeah, the loudest of the community tries to make it sexy and exciting for some hosed reason. Like you need to sauce up someone being killed.

Are any podcasts out there that try to make the Battle of Stalingrad fun and sexy, or that too many victims to mock?

Need to get OJ and John Ramsey on the case, they’re our best hope of finding the real killers.

I have an ex that started putting these shows on all night and falling asleep to them. I could still hear it through the headphones. I remember beimg awake at like 4AM and wanting to get the gently caress out and just going to sleep on the couch instead. She took it the wrong way.

its just a natural evolution from tv shows in which novelists who write murder mystery novels go around solving actual murders (murder she wrote, castle, probably others)

She was probably on edge because of all the murder podcasts she was listening to.

I do appreciate that they always try to keep the framing around serial killers as being pathetic weirdos deserving of humiliation and scorn as opposed to this otherworldly fear like these people are cartoon supervillains or something.

It's already been mentioned how stupid police often are, but even then serial killers are often caught by coincidence or galaxy brain idiocy undoing everything. They're not a James Bond super genius.

my favorite example is that creepy gently caress robert dust who was literally in a documentary about his own murders, still claiming innocence in the interviews, then went into the bathroom and rambled to himself about having "killed them all" not realizing his mic was still on

That's why I like lpotl. I prefer books for my true crime. They're generally better researched, much less likely to involve salivating over the gory details, and don't have any fuckin commercials

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Durst

quote:

The documentary ends with Durst moving into a bathroom, where his microphone records him seemingly saying to himself: "There it is. You're caught! .... You're right, of course. But you can't imagine. ... Arrest him ... I don't know what's in the house ... Oh, I want this ... What a disaster ... He was right. I was wrong. And the burping ... I'm having difficulty with the question ... What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course."[70][71] It later became known in 2019 the filmmakers altered the sequence of Durst's comments, increasing the apparent severity of his musings in the bathroom.[72][73]

The Associated Press reported that a March 1999 letter from Durst to Berman, discovered by her stepson and turned over to the filmmakers during their research,[74] provided "key new evidence" leading to the filing of murder charges against Durst.[75]

During the production of The Jinx, producers Andrew Jarecki, Marc Smerling, and Zac Stuart-Pontier realized the information and interviews with Durst uncovered potential criminal evidence and they felt obligated to deliver it to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office. The new information led to Durst's indictment for the first degree murder of Susan Berman.[76]

I stumbled across the highlighted bit reading up on this; seems like the kind of sensationalist murder porn OP is complaining about in the first place, with a side dish of To Catch A Predator, but the wiki writeup makes it sound like the letter was much more the lynchpin to the prosecution than the soundbites.

I'd say, if you kill multiple people and get away with it, maybe say "no comment" to the press?

I think the closest I've gotten to a true crime podcast was reading A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and she talks about how much modern society looooooves the idea of women getting killed and how that's pretty hosed up before spending a whole-rear end book about how the ancient Romans were just as hosed up but they're favored murder victims were different. Also about how much Cato the Elder loved cabbage.

Also, I guess there's the Well There's Your Problem about HH Holmes.

It's odd to me because I cannot listen to murder podcasts etc. It's just too much. But I can definitely listen to every episode of lions led by donkeys which has some detailed cruelty but listening to women being murdered by men which is most of the murder podcasts focus. Or men murdering men.

I just can't listen to the level of detail. I tried to watch mind hunter not knowing really what it was. I got to the fat gently caress talking about his murders and just had every fiber of my being forcing me to the. That poo poo off. I had the same experience with the show The Maid.

This is probably a deep childhood memory of my mother being violently abused by her first husband but I just can't watch or listen to violence against women in the detail that these shows or podcasts portray. It's pretty loving horrifying to glorify that poo poo.
