I saw that. Based on a book by Robert Heinlein. It was a three-part mini-series.

I love the episode where Little Dog is tempted to turn in Big Dog/Jonathan for money and his angel and devil on his shoulder come out and they both tell him to snitch on him for money, except the angel version says it in a slightly more formal way 🤣🤣

The Moon Monster posted:

The original run from the creator actually had him as the straight man in plenty of episodes. Like the one where an antelope dates him to make her boyfriend, a crab, jealous. Or the one where a Schoolhouse Rock guy teaches him how to manipulate women and then gets his rear end kicked. There was also plenty of Johnny being a doofus though. In the later episodes where they retooled the show a bit he was 100% doofus.

Apparently some of the later episodes have the original creator return and Johnny reverts to his original characterisation more.

There's a story about how when they first pitched the show to Cartoon Network's suits, the men were mixed on it but the women were strongly in support of it. Presumably knowing all too well about obnoxious guys and seeing the humour in him getting punished for his behaviour.

Said creator has also mentioned that Johnny probably does sometimes succeed, that just doesn't make interesting episodes.

70's to late 80's cartoons were mostly the worst kind of loving garbage. They were made with the assumption that kids are dumber than dogs. I'd say there a re a few exceptions like Teddy Ruxpin, Astroboy and Inspector Gadget but the 90's started treating the audience as more than babbling morons. Lots of decent cartoons in the 90's, nothing amazing but decent.

Retro could be the 2000's now. We would've considered 80's cartoons retro in the early 2000's and now it's 2023 so I think 2000's qualifies.

Captain Power was actually meant for adults and kids, and caught on with neither as a result. J. Michael Straczynski was a writer though, which is kind of funny.
