CelticPredator posted:I don’t think Harry Potter fans want a remake Yeah, I think it's legit gonna be hard to replace the original cast in folks' minds (never mind all the other baggage this has.) And the thing is, whatever bits of the plot were changed, Hogwarts and environs *looked* pretty much as Rowling wrote them so it's not like the show's going to have a new and different aesthetic that'll be interesting to see.

What? No. Deadpool's a snarky weirdo who's aware he's in a comic book, Hellboy is a gruff but generally good-hearted guy who punches monsters.

The heart attack scene still kinda puzzles me, I get the initial idea is to stop Macready blowing everything up but why then eat someone in front of everyone else? (Also who did get into the blood if neither guy who had the key was the Thing?)

Outbreak was almost in one of these, because there was also a film being developed based on The Hot Zone, focusing on the discovery of an ebola-adjacent virus in a primate lab in Virginia- that one never got made but the original story was pretty big.

I'm pretty sure I started to hear chat from film Twitter-adjacent types about doing a Barbie/Oppenheimer double feature as soon as it was announced the two movies would open on the same date. Hell I recall tweeting something like that myself. I'm sure the studios probably did some work to pump this up but it seems like there was also a base of genuine enthusiasm. (Like it helped that movie buffs were probably interested in Oppenheimer bc Nolan, but were probably also interested in Barbie because there was so much acclaim for Greta Gerwig's last film.) I mean marketing is part of it in that Barbie was genuinely well marketed, more so than a LOT of movies these days. Like sure it has a brand people recognize but it doesn't feel like they fell back on that as readily as, say, "here's Michael Keaton saying 'I'm Batman'!"

John McTiernan went from making Predator and Die Hard and The Hunt for Red October to serving time for trying to spy on his producer for Rollerball. Action directors seem to get hit pretty hard, must be how styles change and how blockbuster filmmaking has evolved.

Shageletic posted:According to a quick google, directors can't claim a writing credit unless there are no other writers in the production. It definitely seems likely Villeneuve had a strong hand over the writing over the first one. The WGA rules are that while someone who’s just credited as a writer gets credit if they’ve written 33% or more of the “final script”, but directors need 55% or more and producers need 65% or more, presumably on the logic that they’re getting a bigger chunk of residuals anyway and they don’t need to horn in on our cut. So yeah if a director’s not credited as a writer they still can have written quite a bit of it. And yeah often times if a director is there from early on the writer(s) will be taking them into consideration, like Evan Hunter wrote for Hitchcock and was very clear that Hitch was part of the writing process.

The Keep is like seeing the daily rushes of a really neat movie, like the material is clearly there but it’s just fragments. Also the one time I saw it the sound mix was really weird, the dialogue was hard to hear.

The thing is, if you do "Superman but evil", you have something like the story that inspired the character in the first place. Siegel and Shuster (or just one of them, I forget) read a story called Gladiator, which was a then-not-atypical pulp sci-fi thing about a man getting godlike powers and becoming a dangerous megalomaniac. They were the ones who thought, "Well wait, what if someone had this power and used it for good?" Obviously stories about super-powerful bad guys still work but it's not necessarily made more interesting by giving them a cape and saying "doesn't this remind you of a certain someone we don't have the rights to"?

I mean let's be clear, it's hard to say whether any of the flaws of David Ayer's Suicide Squad can be blamed on him since the entire film was taken out of his hands and redone by the people who made the trailer. There are still parts of it that are interesting enough that you wonder what might have been.

PotC 2 is enjoyable in the way a lot of the old serials are in that the plot is going all over the goddamn place and throwing out all sorts of things just to keep the story moving, whereas PotC 3 has to tie all that up and that's a tall loving order. and why the gently caress is it only two ships fighting at the end is this where Disney drew the budget lines or what
