Yeah, I think it's legit gonna be hard to replace the original cast in folks' minds (never mind all the other baggage this has.)

And the thing is, whatever bits of the plot were changed, Hogwarts and environs *looked* pretty much as Rowling wrote them so it's not like the show's going to have a new and different aesthetic that'll be interesting to see.

I'm pretty sure I started to hear chat from film Twitter-adjacent types about doing a Barbie/Oppenheimer double feature as soon as it was announced the two movies would open on the same date. Hell I recall tweeting something like that myself. I'm sure the studios probably did some work to pump this up but it seems like there was also a base of genuine enthusiasm. (Like it helped that movie buffs were probably interested in Oppenheimer bc Nolan, but were probably also interested in Barbie because there was so much acclaim for Greta Gerwig's last film.)

I mean marketing is part of it in that Barbie was genuinely well marketed, more so than a LOT of movies these days. Like sure it has a brand people recognize but it doesn't feel like they fell back on that as readily as, say, "here's Michael Keaton saying 'I'm Batman'!"

Shageletic posted:

According to a quick google, directors can't claim a writing credit unless there are no other writers in the production. It definitely seems likely Villeneuve had a strong hand over the writing over the first one.

The WGA rules are that while someone who’s just credited as a writer gets credit if they’ve written 33% or more of the “final script”, but directors need 55% or more and producers need 65% or more, presumably on the logic that they’re getting a bigger chunk of residuals anyway and they don’t need to horn in on our cut.

So yeah if a director’s not credited as a writer they still can have written quite a bit of it. And yeah often times if a director is there from early on the writer(s) will be taking them into consideration, like Evan Hunter wrote for Hitchcock and was very clear that Hitch was part of the writing process.

The thing is, if you do "Superman but evil", you have something like the story that inspired the character in the first place. Siegel and Shuster (or just one of them, I forget) read a story called Gladiator, which was a then-not-atypical pulp sci-fi thing about a man getting godlike powers and becoming a dangerous megalomaniac. They were the ones who thought, "Well wait, what if someone had this power and used it for good?"

Obviously stories about super-powerful bad guys still work but it's not necessarily made more interesting by giving them a cape and saying "doesn't this remind you of a certain someone we don't have the rights to"?

There have been like 5 directors attached to a JJTrek sequel, plus the whole Tarantino thing that was a separate project

I just don’t think Paramount has the $100 million+ to sink into a new Trek film. They didn’t promote Beyond at all until like a month before release and it bombed.

Paramount could go back to the old (post-TMP but before JJ) ways and make a really cheap Trek movie with recycled FX footage and reused sets!
