This is the Guild of Dungeoneering!
On our quests we’re never fearing!
O, to be a Dungeoneer—Swimming in pools of gold!

The Guild of Dungeoneering is a deckbuilding exploration RPG with a twist. It was originally released in 2015, developed by Gambrinous and published by Versus Evil. The Ultimate Edition, a remaster which features many tweaks/rebalances and adds in the original’s DLC, was released in 2021 (This is the version we will be running)

…With a twist?
Yes! There are quite a few ideas thrown into how this game works. To try and summarize as best as I can: You create the dungeon your character explores, while not directly controlling the character’s exploration. There are ways to influence where you character goes, but ultimately that comes down to the character’s motivations (which are pretty easy to figure out, but can change).
Combat is handled through a card battle with a deck that you construct through earned loot and other factors. Loot cards are temporary for the dungeon you’re in, and you earn other permanent cards through successful runs through the dungeons.

…This’ll probably make more sense if you just watch an episode, honestly.

…and you know what you’re doing?
Kinda. I picked this up when it initially came out and played it for a bit, but hadn’t really picked it up again until just recently. I’ve re-oriented myself with how the game works, but any changes to quests or rebalancing cards/equipment or any new stuff is going to be new to me here, too. We’ll discover it all together!

I really enjoy the somewhat unique gameplay approach (at least I’ve not encountered anything quite like it), the music is done really well, and it’s a nice little game. Come join the Guild—there’s plenty of room from continuous turnover (at least with my luck there probably will be)!

Very cool! I've always shied away from deck builders because balancing buffs/debuffs just doesn't jive with my brain for some reason.

So watching you balancing when to accept the stupidity cards will be fun. That fountain hunter trait just sounds like a nightmare for me.

Usually you can do a decent job of avoiding stupidity (and there are traits you can gain randomly that make them somewhat useful), but they're also usually attached to items that boost total health, which is rather important since you always start at level 1 in every dungeon.

Normally I don't make aesthetic criticisms in other peoples' homes, but that rug looks like a beaver exploded. If meat is murder, then that rug is at least a severe beating.
This is a fun game! I pre-ordered it and put a lot of time into it once it was released. There's a lot to like about this game but the difficulty scales up very swiftly.

The mechanics stay the same, but more stuff'll be added to the cards (as I encounter in this episode). We shall see what awaits!

There's actually one more I haven't picked up yet--The Mime, which I will most likely pick up at the start of the next episode.

Out of those, I personally like the Bruiser most. The Spiky trait can keep you ahead of the damage count pretty well, but you can be in a lot of trouble if you encounter a lot of magic-based enemies. The Cat Burglar has his uses, and the Apprentice is good if you know you have a lot of magic fights, or you know you can outpace physical attackers. The Grave Digger is somewhat of a wild card with the "take equipment from the dead" trait, but I haven't found huge success with that.

This game's now 40% off at gog.com so I picked it up - so far I haven't lost anyone, which mostly makes me worry that the RNG is lulling me into a false sense of security.

Possibly. With some good luck and planning you can finish without anyone dying (there's a Steam achievement for it, too), but there will probably be times where the cards just hate you.

There aren't HUGE penalties to getting someone killed, but it can hurt, since you'd lose any traits that dungeoneer had.

He still has legs, and a (significantly armored) head. You can still fight like that--just look up Time Killers if you don't believe me :honked:

...but seriously, I looked up his deck after the fight, and his cards are actually evenly split between magic and physical attacks. I apparently just got a little unlucky on the draw, but it all works out in the end.

All the equipment has different attributes. There are the added cards that come with every piece (when it says stuff like "Arcane +1" and "Stupidity +2", for example). The more equipment (or sometimes traits) that add to a specific category give you more (and generally more powerful) cards within that category.

It's designed to force you to clear lower level content with lower tier heros/cards. The gold limits go up at a couple distinct points right when the monsters start to outclass you (give or take the issues with the dlc intergration). It's very heavy handed...

I know there was at least one where I did that. I know I can move two tiles if one is explored, but I think I was just more paranoid about making sure I got where I was going in time, even with doubling back.

Well, gently caress...so it is. Always just glossed over it and assumed the L.

The apprentice has served me well, and might have another run or two(especially given his traits), but we shall see how the next tier looks next time--the super chump looks like a great way to mitigate stupidity cards.
