Italy is the beating heart of Christendom, and of Christian scholarship especially. ...it's also a drat good place to be a Hedonist. Andreas studied Medicine (great for doing even more hedonism), and is a 1. Latinist and 2. Occultist.

Mainwaring posted:I'm going to say something controversial here... I don't like the Abbott Medieval Landlord Kind Of A Dick, film at eleven! Yeah, whether or not the premise grabs you right off the bat (it does me, but I'm also a history nerd), in practice the world is so richly realized and the characters so fun that it'll draw you in. As an educated specialist in the employ of the ecclesiastical authorities, Andreas has more freedom to float around the social hierarchy and say and do things that might cause Problems for others, which makes him an excellent viewpoint for the player.

BassMug posted:Part of the tension I was expressing there, though, was that snubbing the local nobility could also get you killed, or have heaps of trouble visited on you and yours. Pious or actively needling the abbot like we were, you’re being squashed between two much more powerful people who can really screw you over. Heck, even declining the whole deal would still be snubbing a powerful person. This is one of those situations where the game tells you what's going on but doesn't fully explain the subtleties-- you have to infer the social dynamics from watching how others react combined with what you know. Here, everybody else involved is sensibly doing their level best to shut the gently caress up and bail on the conversation without pissing off the Baron, even people like Father Thomas who-- although not a landlord or a noble-- has a measure of status and power. Meanwhile our Andreas just yolos on in what a legend

Another good reason to play the game for yourself as well: the music which plays when Andreas finds the note is genuinely quite creepy, and definitely gives you that chilling sense that something dark is going on that you don't entirely understand.
